Kenneth ‘Kenny’ Wayne Palmer
PALMER, Kenneth “Kenny” Wayne — Age 50, of Winston, Oregon, passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2006. He was born on December 8, 1955, in Corpus Christi, Texas, the son of Arthur and Essie Faye (Merritt) Palmer. He moved with his family at an early age to Port Hueneme, California, where he was raised and educated. Ken moved to Douglas County in 1989, which had been home ever since. He had worked at Mercy Medical Center as an Emergency Room Technician since 1992. He was united in marriage to Teresa Vosika on February 20, 1998. Kenny enjoyed working in his yard, fishing, camping, taking care of fish tanks and hiking trails. He also enjoyed motorcycles and was a member of the local and national chapter of the HOG (Harley Owners Group) Association. He is survived by his wife, Teresa of Winston; children, Katie Hannah and her husband, Richard of Susanville, California; Mason and Nate Vosika, both of Winston; two brothers, Billy Palmer and his wife, Cheryl of Sutherlin, Oregon; Jerome Palmer of Oxnard, California; sister, Deborah Palmer of Reed Springs, Missouri; grandchildren, Richard Hannah Jr.; Michael Hannah of Susanville; step-mother, Eloise Palmer of Oxnard; father-in-law, Archie Owen; brother-in-law, Brian Owen and his wife, Kathy and their children, Wesley and Shaun of Craig, Alaska; niece, Cori Mendenhall and her husband, Brian and their children, Mikayla and Miranda, all of Sutherlin. His parents preceded him in death. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., on Saturday, February 11, 2006, at the Sutherlin Seventh Day Adventist Church, located at 741 W. Central Ave. in Sutherlin. Officiating will be Pastor Ken Williams and Dr. Mark Herscher. TAYLOR’S FAMILY CHAPEL was in charge of the arrangements.

Thomas ‘Tom’ Hulbert Whitehouse
WHITEHOUSE, Thomas “Tom” Hulbert — Tom was born on September 5, 1927, in Nebraska and went home to be with his loving Savior on February 7, 2006. He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Evelyn; sister, Christine Case; mother-in-law, Margaret Rupp; beloved children, Paul; James; Danny; namesake, Thomas; Robert; Nanette; Regina; June; Margaret; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and his puppies, Ginger and Missy. He worked all of his life in many occupations and retired from the Oregon State Penitentiary as a sergeant. He and his wife loved to take car trips and one of their favorite spots was the coast, in particular Coos Bay, Oregon. They were able to take a cruise several years ago to Alaska and one of his dreams was to return to Alaska on another cruise. Tom loved history, holidays (especially Christmas), playing Yahtzee, debates on any subject and spending time with his wife, family and many friends. He had a delightful sense of humor and loved to create jingles and then sing them to anyone who would listen. Tom loved life and laughter and he will be missed by all. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 12, 2006, at 3 p.m., at The Seventh Day Adventist Church in Myrtle Creek, Oregon. Please join his family and friends in a celebration of his life. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to The Seventh Day Adventist Church in Myrtle Creek, for their building fund.

Violet Inscho Wilshire
WILSHIRE, Violet Inscho — Passed away on January 31, 2006, in Seattle, Washington. She was born on April 29, 1907, in Correctionville, Iowa, and four years later her family moved to Lane, South Dakota. In 1925, the family moved to Oregon where Violet finished high school in Glide, Oregon. She earned a teaching certificate from Southern Oregon College and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon. She taught in several school districts around Roseburg, Oregon, including the historic Oak Creek and Brockway one room school houses. She later taught at Glide School and at several schools in the Roseburg area (Benson School, Hucrest, Melrose and Wilbur). She retired in 1972 after 47 years of teaching and was remembered by many of her students as their favorite teacher. Her husband, William Earl Wilshire passed away in 1968. Violet resided in Seattle for the past 15 years. She is survived by her daughters, Willa Halperin of Seattle; Zona Carr of Cherry Hill, New Jersey; three grandchildren in Seattle and one in Missoula, Montana; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was lucid and able to enjoy the company of her family until two days before she passed away peacefully and quietly at the Adult Family Home where she had spent the last six years. Cremation has been held and at her request no formal services were held. Interment will be in the McKay-Davies-Wilshire plot in the pioneer historic Crescent Grove Cemetery in Tigard, Oregon. Memorial donations may be sent to her favorite charity, Shriners Hospital for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Portland, Oregon, 33607-1435.

Judith ‘Judy’ Susan Spitzer (Kemper)
SPITZER, Judith “Judy” Susan (Kemper) — Age 51, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2006. She was born on July 19, 1954, in Roseburg to Manley and Velda Kemper. Judy graduated from Roseburg High School in 1972, went to Umpqua Community College and graduated from Mountain View Bible College in Didsbury, Canada. On March 21, 1981, she married Herbert Arthur Spitzer Jr., of Palmdale, California. Judy frequently volunteered as a teacher’s helper and for her church. She home schooled her children. Judy loved decorating her home and gardening. She enjoyed meeting and working with people. Some of her favorite things to do were camping, fishing, traveling and exploring nature. Judy was a kind and giving person. She is survived by her loving family including her husband, Herbert; daughters, Dianne M. of Palmdale; Amy E. of Roseburg; sister, Carol Worral of Canby, Oregon; brother, William of Twaine Harte, California; and numerous nieces and nephews. Judy was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Larry. Services will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2006, at 1 p.m., at WILSON’S CHAPEL OF THE ROSES, 965 West Harvard, in Roseburg. All who knew her are welcome. A reception following the services will be held at Elmer’s restaurant. Her body will be interred at the Roseburg Memorial Gardens, 1056 N.W. Hicks, in a private family ceremony. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Community Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 2038, Roseburg, Oregon, 97470.

Alta Mae Trowbridge
TROWBRIDGE, Alta Mae — Age 86, of Elkton, Oregon, passed away on January 5, 2006, as a result of a tragic car accident. She was born in Elkton to Charles and Susan (Marple) Clements. Alta lived in Oregon her entire life except for a few years she lived in Montana. Her grandparents were pioneers in the Elkton area. Alta helped establish the Reedsport Friendly Kitchen and was always very generous to others in any way that she could be. She is survived by her sons, Bill and Cindy Weir of Myrtle Creek, Oregon; Steve Trowbridge and companion, Sandy Maret of Wilbur, Oregon; daughter, Diane Burbridge of Ennis, Montana; grandchildren, Robert and Becky Weir of The Dalles, Oregon; Kristy and Tim Hertle of Cornelius, Oregon; David Trowbridge of Harrisburg, Oregon; Daniel Trowbridge of Yoncalla, Oregon; Sauni and David Hardy of Yoncalla; Steven Trowbridge of Casper, Wyoming; Robert and Brook Magera; David and Shari Magera; and Joe Magera, all of Seattle, Washington; CheriLynn and Richard Smith of Washington; and 20 great-grandchildren. Alta was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, two sisters and one brother. A graveside service will be held on Friday, January 13, 2006, at 2 p.m., at the Elkton Cemetery. CHAPEL OF THE FIRS is in charge of the arrangements.

Lester Robert Stith
STITH, Lester Robert — Age 92, of Sutherlin, Oregon, passed away in Roseburg, Oregon, on January 6, 2006. He was born on December 25, 1913, in Vancouver, Washington, to John and Mary (Stenger) Stith. Lester moved to Sutherlin in 1979. He enjoyed playing pool at the Sutherlin Senior Center and talking with all his friends. On May 20, 1997, in Reno, Nevada, he married Lorene Hofius. Survivors include his wife, Lorene Stith of Sutherlin and step-daughter, Betty Atencio of Coos Bay, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Stith; step-son, Arthur Smith; and his sister and brothers. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., on Thursday, January 12, 2006, at Valley View Cemetery. CHAPEL OF THE FIRS is assisting the family.

Wanda D. Popken
POPKEN, Wanda Dean — Age 73, of Winston, Oregon, was reunited with her true love and her only son on January 6, 2006. She was born on November 15, 1932, in Cedar, Arkansas, to become the first and only daughter of Tom and Ethel Whisenhunt. She moved out west with her family to the Oregon coast a few years after her birth. Wanda graduated from Reedsport High School in 1951, where she was the class secretary, class treasurer, played volleyball and basketball, and was crowned annual princess. She was also involved in the pep-club, girl’s league, student counsel, Christmas pageant, class plays, yearbook staff and glee club. In 1955, she gave birth to her first and only son, Michael Thomas Popken. In 1958, she re-married. Her second husband, Gene Popken, who was the love of her life and they spent 37 happy years together in Winston. During their time in Winston, Gene and Wanda owned and operated Popken Trucking. Wanda used her experience as a banker to handle the accounting side of the business. She is survived by her devoted daughter-in-laws, Cheryl Popken of Corvallis; Jan Drake of Winston; along with David Popken and his wife, Kris Johnson of Seabrook, Texas; Pam (Popken) and Doug O’Mara of Dayton, Montana; John Madrigal and his wife, Rene of Ronan, Montana. She also leaves her life-long friend and next door neighbor, Cynthia Pringle as well as long-time companions, Midge Brundrige, Carol Harrington, Shirley McAninch and Marlene Friese. Her grandchildren include Morgan Tucker and his wife, Lisa of Pleasant Hill; Andy Popken and his wife, Jenni and their soon to be born son (Wanda’s soon to be great-grandson) of Roseburg; Stacey Madrigal and her son, Gavin White of Elmer City, Washington; Maryn Simms of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Dusty and Nick Popken of Portland. Wanda D. Popken will be remembered by all of her loved ones as a great storyteller, who always spoke her mind. Wanda enjoyed collecting dolls, gardening, her fishpond with many "pet" goldfish and keeping in touch with all her friends by email. Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Ethel Whisenhunt; infant brother; husband, Gene Popken; and sons, Gene Popken and Michael Popken. Those who knew her may pay their respects to her amazing spirit and her passionate heart at Taylor’s Family Chapel from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m., on Friday, January 13, 2006. Services will be held on Saturday January 14, 2006, at 11 a.m. You are all invited to join us at Wanda’s home after the service to share stories and memories, food will be provided. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia-Lymphoma Cancer Research.

Joseph A. Love
LOVE, Joseph A. — Age 80, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on January 3, 2006, at a Hospital in Roseburg. Joe was born on July 30, 1925, in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, the son of Percy N. and Agnes Love. He spent his youth in the eastern United States attending schools in Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York. On graduation from high school he entered the U.S. Navy and served in WWII in the submarine service. After discharge from the Navy in 1946, he attended the University of Buffalo and then continued his education at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He became a physical therapist and working for VA Hospitals in Dayton, Ohio; Sepulveda, California; Roseburg; and Salem Virginia, an then retuning to the Roseburg VA Hospital once again in 1970, his years of service totaling 38. His last three VA appointments he served as Chief of Physical Therapy. He met and married his wife, Carol (Sperber), when they both worked at the VA in 1960. After retirement from the VA Hospital, Joe was employed at Mercy Medical Center and later a private physical therapy clinic. He cherished the many friendships he made while working. Joe’s most enjoyable pass time was playing golf at the VA golf course with his best friends for the past 35 years. He also loved to read, his favorite subject being history. He was pro at channel surfing, being able to keep up with three to five football games simultaneously while also listening to classical music on his transistor radio. Joe was a member of the First Christian Church in Roseburg. Since the 1960’s he had served as Sunday school teacher, deacon, and elder in various Christian churches in the different communities where he resided. Joe Love was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He is survived by his wife, Carol; son, Dr. Joseph E. Love and his wife, Lisa; grandchildren, Alex and Hannah of Omak, Washington; daughter, Lenee Love-Gray and her husband, Todd; grandchildren, Megan and Mychael of Vancouver, Washington; sister, Dorothy McDermott and her husband, Jim of Lynchburg, Virginia; sister-in-law, Gloria Holden; nephew, Steven Holden of Alameda, California; brother-in-law, Steve Sperber and his wife, Mary of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; nephews, Ed Lynn and Tim Sperber of Idaho; and Brandon Sperber of Turlock, California; and their lovely families. This wonderful man of great integrity leaves behind many close friends he also considered family who will dearly miss him. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2006, at 3 p.m., at the First Christian Church at Douglas and Kane Streets in Roseburg. Minister Bruce Russell will officiate. This will be a celebration of Joe’s life and all of his friends are invited to join family after the service for a reception in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lion’s Den Youth Program at First Christian Church in Roseburg. WILSON’S CHAPEL OF THE ROSES is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert John Hatterscheid
HATTERSCHEID, Robert John — Age 92, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on January 7, 2006, in Roseburg. He was born in Kalispell, Montana, on November 15, 1913, to Charles and Mae (Hinkey) Hatterscheid. In April of 1941, Robert married Margaret Cecelia Walsh in Glendive, Montana. He enlisted in the Unites States Navy serving for nine years as Band Master during World War II and later. When Robert left the Navy he moved with his family to Eugene, Oregon, for a short time. In the mid 1940’s, he moved to Roseburg. Robert was manager of the Allis Chalmers Tractor Store in Roseburg and later was manager of the Caterpillar Store on Diamond Lek Blvd. A year before the big blast Robert opened up an insurance agency downtown. He retired in 1965 and moved to Monterey, California. Before long he was insurance manager for the Monterey Savings and Loan. After retiring again he moved back to Roseburg in 1988. Robert was a member of the Elks and a former member of the Roseburg Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed listening to music, especially classical music and dance music. Survivors include his daughter, Ann Dodge and her husband, Perry of Roseburg; grandsons, Robert; David; and Steven Gilchrist. Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Hatterscheid who passed away March 2, 1997. WILSON’S CHAPEL OF THE ROSES is assisting the family.

William ‘Bill’ Miller Gadway
GADWAY, William “Bill” Miller — Left this life on Sunday, January 8, 2006. He was born to Dorothy Love Miller and Leslie Dower Gadway in Staples, Minnesota, on November 24, 1920. Bill came to Roseburg, Oregon, when he was eleven years old and spent his remaining years here. He worked at Roseburg Sand and Gravel, owned the Flying ‘A’ station on S. Stephens St., worked for Patterson’s Bakery, then owned and operated Anderson Place Market on Harvard Avenue from 1956 until 1972. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Roseburg for many years and fished for about 15 years out of Winchester Bay, Oregon, on the Debbie Sue. After retirement he was either traveling, ‘snowbirding’ in Arizona, spending time on the ranch, or visiting with friends over coffee. Bill leaves behind his wife, Elinor Jean Gadway; four children, by his first wife; daughters, Barbara J. Stone; Janice M. and her husband, Doyle Gardner of Roseburg; Deborah Foltz of Wenatchee, Washington; son, Stephen L. and his wife, DeLores Gadway of Phoenix, Oregon; three step-children, Vicki and her husband, Don Cooper; Christi and her husband, Gary Helbing; Dan and his wife, Betty Bean, all of Roseburg. Bill had 16 grandchildren, Tammy; Annette; Christina; Kurt; Keith; Kimberly; Rebekah; Kristi; Christopher and Stephanie; Paul; Brenda; Natalie; Wendy; Mariah and Maxwell; 29 great-grandchildren; and one great- great-granddaughter. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Yvonne Brown; Phyllis Pearson Marr; Ruth White; brother, Richard Gadway; and first wife, Carolyn Harem Gadway, in 1975. Services will be held at Chapel of the Roses in Roseburg, on Saturday, January 14, 2006, at 11 a.m. There will be a viewing on Friday, January 13, 2006, from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m., for those wishing to pay their respects. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mercy Hospice or the Cancer Fund. Wilson’s Chapel of the Roses is in charge of arrangements.

Burton ‘Bud’ Burns
BURNS, Burton “Bud” — Passed away on January 3, 2006. He was born on September 18, 1928, in the family’s farmhouse in North Dakota. He lived alternately between the family farm and Brocket North Dakota during his childhood. World War II found Bud and his family moving to Portland, Oregon, where they found work in the shipyards. The Korean War prompted another move on Bud’s part, this time thousands of miles away to serve in the United States Army. Upon his return, he embarked on a diverse work career. Over the course of Bud’s life he worked in a variety of jobs. He was a welder, a mechanic, a builder of highways and dams, and a miner of mercury, steam and gold. The last seventeen years of his life he spent managing the Roseburg Lumber Truck Shop. In all of his various work settings, Bud was always trying to make things more efficient and effective. Doing so was as much of a hobby for his as it was a job. On July 25, 1955, Bud married Bettie Whitcomb. They celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in July of 2005. Bud was preceded in death by his sister, Jan McGary and his brother, Robert Burns. He is survived by his wife, Bettie Burns; daughter, Heather Burns and her partner, Colleen Henery; two dear granddaughters, Kendall and Delaney Henery; sisters, Barbara Ann Burt; Dorothy Deblock; Betty Jean Evanson; and many nieces and nephews. Bud was a devoted husband and father and a friend to many in the community. He had a sincere interest in people and was always willing to help others. He will be missed by his family and friends. Services to commemorate his life will be held at the Dillard-Winston Methodist Church on Saturday, January 21, 2006, at 2 p.m. A private interment will be held on a date yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Mercy Hospice, 2400 Stewart Parkway, Suite 200, Roseburg, Oregon, 97470, or Dillard Methodist Church, 131 Fourth St. Dillard, Oregon, 97432.

Sheryl Kay Hawk
HAWK, Sheryl Kay — Age 68, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2006. She was born on February 28, 1938, in Avon, Illinois, the daughter of Harley J. and Marjorie Ann (Wilson) Eathington. Sheryl was a member of the Red Hat Ladies Society and worked in the medical field for 30 years. She enjoyed doing ceramics with her special friends in Sutherlin, Oregon, car rides, going to the coast, dinner with her family on holidays, crocheting and word search puzzle books. Sheryl also loved her two cats, “Arabella” and “Issabella”. She is survived by three children, Dawn Anderson-Williams and her husband, Richard of Roseburg; Mike Hawk and his wife, Julie; and Mary Hawk, all of Avon; sister, Adeline and her husband, Calvin; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; special friends, Mary Lou McKnight; Joyce Smith; Betty Wylie and Betty Perkins; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Brian Hawk; and sister, Marvis Cotter. The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Sharp and Dr. Kumar for the care that they provided. Arrangements are under the direction of Taylor’s Family Chapel.

Ethel Lucille Linderman
LINDERMAN, Ethel Lucille — Age 74, of Winchester, Oregon, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, April 16, 2006. She was born on August 27, 1931, in Harrison Township, Pennsylvania, to Charles and Leona (Stuart) Fleming. Ethel married Paul Linderman on October 30, 1954, in Tarentum, Pennsylvania. They moved to Sutherlin, Oregon, in 1983 from Fullerton, California. Ethel was a Charter Member of the Roseburg Women of the Moose, serving in many different offices in the club. She enjoyed socializing with her friends, and was well liked by everyone who knew her. Ethel raised her children with a firm but loving hand and was a doting grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed doing crafts, going shopping and making many trips to Disneyland. Ethel was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Sutherlin. Survivors include her daughter, Margaret Medon and her husband, Richard of New York; son, Paul Linderman and his wife, Pam of Winchester; grandchildren, Michael Kennedy; Jarred Newell; Scott Carter and his wife, Kristen; Stephanie Field and her husband, Samuel; Andy Linderman; Kimbaree Linderman; Dalton McHargue and Amanda McHargue; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Herbert Fleming and his wife, Evelyn of Pennsylvania; sister, Elizabeth Altamons and her husband, Charles of Arizona; and special friends, Marshall and Elaine Jennings of Sutherlin; and Jim and Lynn McCabe of Portland, Oregon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Linderman who passed away on January 18, 2005, and daughter, Darla Eldridge. Visitation will be on Saturday, April 22, 2006, at 10 a.m., at Wilson’s Chapel of the Roses. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with Pastor Frank Fiedler officiating. She will be laid to rest at Eagle Point National Cemetery. WILSON’S CHAPEL OF THE ROSES is assisting the family.
