Russell Vernon Ritter
RITTER, Russell Vernon — Age 95, of Roseburg, Oregon, went to be with the Lord on January 19, 2006, at a local hospital. He was born in Valparaiso, Indiana, on February 5, 1910, and spent his early years growing up on the family farm. He later went on to Wheaton College where he completed a BA in literature in 1935 and a BD at Chicago’s Northern Baptist Seminary in 1939. After pastoring a church for three years in South Dakota, he returned to Northern Baptist to complete his doctorate in theology. Vernon had a variety of faculty positions in colleges and seminaries including California Bapt. Seminary, Kansas City Baptist Seminary, University of New Mexico, Grand Canyon College, and Westmont College. While on the faculty at Cal Baptist the institution was in need of a librarian, so he went back to USC and completed a library science degree. From that point on, he was heavily involved designing and planning the operation of new libraries. In addition to Vernon’s library and teaching duties, he wrote articles and abstracts for various library and abstracting journals including CLEO Press & Wycliffe Bible Translators (specializing in Old Testament and ancient near-eastern studies). Often, just to get away from the hectic pace of higher education, he would go camping. He found that trees, trails, and trout streams helped him unwind. He was a good father, husband and dedicated teacher who will be missed by the many lives he touched. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; his sister, Arcola Watters; and his granddaughter, Deborah Bielawski. He is survived by his son, Dale Ritter and his wife, Toni of Roseburg; his grandsons, Mark Ritter of LaJolla, California; David Ritter and his wife, Mary; and great-grandson, Braden, all of Grand Terrace, California. Vernon was actively involved in church ministry until his later years and was a member of the First Conservative Baptist Church. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Wycliffe Bible Translators, PO Box 628211, Orlando, Florida, 32862.
