Mattie E. Abbot-Samson
1911-2004
Mattie E. Abbot-Samson, 93, of Cottage Grove, died Sept. 23 from age-related causes.
She was born March 5, 1911, in Wheeler, Ark., to Samuel and Minnie Huckaby.
She married Charles Abbott, who died, and later married a dear friend of the family, Elmer Samson, who also preceded his wife in death.
She formerly lived in Oakridge before moving to Cottage Grove where she lived for 40 years.
Due to her declining health, her family moved her to be near them in Milwaukie.
She was a homemaker.
She was well-known for her quilts, having made hundreds, and she was an avid gardener.
She was a member of the Church of Christ at Sixth and Gibbs streets for 40 years.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law: Peggy and Ted Jones of Milwaukie; three grandchildren and spouses: Donna Whalen and her husband, Shaun, Charles Jones and Carol Lindsay and her husband, Bob; three great-grandsons: David and Dustin Olson and Mike Whalen; stepdaughter: Hope Grazer; two stepgrandchildren: Terry Grazer and Gloria Sanborn; three sisters: Lena Leeper of Mesa, Ariz., Dola Neal of Salem and Sue Lightle of Bakersfield, Calif.; and three brothers: Howard, Lon and Ronald Huckaby, all of Bakersfield, Calif.
Visitation and a service were Tuesday at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel.
A private interment was to be held at Fir Grove Cemetery in Cottage Grove.

Ruby Irene Hodgson
1916-2004
Ruby Irene Hodgson, an 81-year resident of Cottage Grove, died Sept. 19 at the age of 88 from age-related causes.
She was born May 4, 1916, to George and Effie Ballew in Medicine Hat, Canada.
She moved with her family to Cottage Grove in 1923 and graduated from Cottage Grove High School.
She married Elmer McCoy in 1936 and he died in 1949.
She married Alvin Hodgson in Idaho Oct. 23, 1967.
She was a well-known grocery clerk at Wolfard's Grocery in Cottage Grove from 1949 to 1967.
She loved her family.
She loved children and Halloween was a special time for her.
She enjoyed reading, bowling, gardening, sewing, working crossword puzzles and traveling with her husband in their motorhome.
She was a member of the Garden Club and Lane County Extension Club.
Survivors include her son: Mason McCoy of Yreka, Calif.; daughter: Mary Greenley of Montague, Calif.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Her husband, sister and brother preceded her in death.
Visitation was held Thursday and a service was Friday at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel.
Interment was at Fir Grove Cemetery in Cottage Grove.
Harold Tapp
1914-2004
Harold Tapp, a 61-year resident of Cottage Grove, died at the age of 90 from cancer.
He was born Aug. 9, 1914, in Renton, Wash., to Louis and Emma Tapp.
He was raised in Elkton and completed eighth grade at Muddy Flat.
He was a member of CCC at which time he made and played his own violin.
He married Mae Leatherwood May 19, 1936. She died a few years later.
He married Jane Harris June 7, 1952, in Grants Pass.
He was a truck mechanic and worked for R&W Trucking Co., Bohemia, Georgia Pacific and Pass Creek Paving.
He enjoyed woodworking; repairing pianos, music boxes and clocks; and building player pianos.
He was an Intarsia artist and has two pieces of work at the Cottage Grove Museum.
He also enjoyed fishing and hunting.
He built his own home, fireplace and patio with rock he and his wife collected, sliced and polished.
He also repaired the nickelodeon for the carousel that will be used in a proposed mining and timber park.
He loved people, nature, word search puzzles, jokes and life.
He was a lifetime member of the Masonic and Elks lodges.
He was preceded in death by his wife and daughter, Sue Harris.
No service is planned.
A private cremation was held at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove.

Ragan McKaye Baker
1986-2004
Ragan McKaye Baker, 18, of Cottage Grove died Thursday from an epileptic seizure.
A service will be at Elkton Community Education Center today at 5:30 p.m.
She was born June 15, 1986, in Las Vegas to Dennis and Maria Baker.
She grew up in Las Vegas and lived the past eight years in Elkton and Cottage Grove.
She loved the water and swimming.
Her favorite color was purple and she loved the Beatles.
Her knowledge of geography and the presidents was impressive.
Survivors include her mother of Cottage Grove; father of Austin, Texas, and two sisters: Erin and Morgan Baker of Cottage Grove.
A private cremation was held under the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel and Crematory.
An earlier service was held Sunday at Sunset Hills Memorial Park Chapel in Eugene.
