Dewey Begley
BEGLEY, Dewey — Age 89 years, of Sutherlin, Oregon, passed away on March 30, 2005. He was born on May 10, 1915, in St. Joe, Arkansas. His parents were M.C. and Harriet Begley. The doctor who delivered him said he would not survive so his parents never gave him a middle name. He married Veronica "Tony" Lena Hunter on July 3, 1937, in Barnsdall, Oklahoma. Dewey and Tony came to Oregon in 1941. Dewey hated to admit that a Model A Ford was how they arrived in Oregon because he was a lifelong Chevy man. The Great Depression caused many people to become nomads. Dewey lived that kind of life for many years. Good economic times in Oregon financed a few trips back to Oklahoma, where his parents lived. He wanted to farm and Oklahoma was where he grew up. He had many jobs during his life. Farmer, mechanic, ranchhand, gas station worker, and mill worker. He discovered his rainbow was in Oregon and settled down for good. He became a mellow old fellow who was quick to smile and do a little dance to a silly little tune he sang. He was part angel, part leprechaun and was little bit ornery sometimes. Those are the times he had to reach back and straighten his halo. Dewey was a patient in the hospital last year and he danced, joked and visited up and down the hall, all the while looking for a break in the front lines so he could make his getaway. He even tried to bribe his daughters with a meal at McDonald’s if they would sneak him out of the hospital. Dewey was devoted to Tony and cared for her during the years of her affliction with Alzheimer's disease. They had five children and were married 66 years. She passed away in 2003. Dewey loved reading his bible given to him by Tony. He spent many years playing pool with his friends at the Sutherlin Senior Center. He gave up driving when he began seeing two cars coming at him instead of one. He began riding a bike for transportation and rode it until he was 86 years old. He gave it up for a 4-wheel scooter and enjoyed it for almost two years. All the while the family continued to worry about the "two cars instead of one" reason he gave for giving up his car. Brothers, Carl, Tommy, Ray and William and sisters, Oda, Bertha and Idella preceded him in death. He is survived by his sisters, Myrl Hunter of Eugene, Oregon; Oma Jane of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; daughters, Edith Spain and husband, John; Mary Kachel of Sutherlin; sons, James Begley and wife, Charlotte of Cornelius, Oregon; Wyatt Begley and wife, Marla of Molalla, Oregon; Dewey Ray Begley of Sutherlin; grandsons, John E. Spain of Sutherlin; Jason Spain of Colusa, California; Stephen Spain of Riverside, California; Sam Kachel of Coos Bay, Oregon; James Begley Jr. of Cornelius, Oregon; Ryan and Nick Begley of Molalla; Ron Koch of Roseburg; Jon Koch of Salem, Oregon; Jimmy Lee Martin of Greensboro, North Carolina; granddaughters, Veronica Erbe; Erica Thompson of Roseburg; Terri Yeager of Cornelius; Monica Gibson of Portland; Andrea Gray of Wilsonville, Oregon; great grandson, Joe Begley of Cornelius; Anthony Thompson of Roseburg; Mike Thompson and Kohki Shoji of Myrtle Creek, Oregon; Mason Spain of Junction City, Oregon; Noah Spain of Eugene; Nick and Beau Martin of Greensboro; Jakob Gray of Wilsonville; Koshka Gibson of Portland; great granddaughters, Alicia Begley; Brittany and Rachel Yeager of Cornelius; Christine Erbe and Camille Thompson of Roseburg; Megan and Morghin Spain of Junction City, Oregon; Rebecca Spain of Sutherlin; and Lily Begley of Molalla; great great-granddaughter, Makaya Thompson of Myrtle Creek. Numerous nieces and nephews and in-laws will also miss Dewey. Dewey loved his big family and they loved him back. The family is very grateful to Dr. Luke Herscher for his compassionate care of Dewey. A special thanks to Douglas House in Sutherlin for going the extra mile in allowing Dewey to be with familiar, caring people up to the last month of his life. And to Umpqua Valley Nursing Home, there are no words to express the family's appreciation of your kindness and compassion to both the family and Dewey. A private graveside service was held for Dewey on Saturday, April 2, 2005. He went to meet Tony in a new pair of bib overalls and his plaid sports coat that he wore when he was "dressed up" for any occasion. I am sure it made her smile.
