Vernon Black

Vernon Black, 83, a lifetime resident of Cottage Grove, died Aug. 4 of Parkinson's disease.
He was born Feb. 17, 1921, to Wilber and Ardella Black in Patterson, Calif.
He graduated from high school.
He served in the U.S. Navy and was a Pearl Harbor veteran and involved in the battle at Midway. Arizona Sen. John McCain's grandfather was his commanding officer.
He received a Silver Star and two air medals for 43 combat missions.
He married Alberta Cook Oct. 18, 1955.
He worked as a mill worker at Weyerhaeuser Co.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
He was a member of the Cottage Grove BPOE No. 1904.
Survivors include his sister and brother-in-law: Doris and Jim Determan of Eugene and nephews: Floyd Black of Lorane and Edward Rambousek of Estacada.
A service was held Saturday at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove, followed by interment at Fir Grove Cemetery.

Barbara LeeGatha Armitage
1940-2004
Barbara LeeGatha Armitage, 64, of Cottage Grove, died Aug. 1.
The family did not list cause of death.
She was born Feb. 11, 1940, in Murphy, N.C., to Jesse and Elzie Woody.
She attended Cottage Grove High School and graduated from Oakland High School.
She attended Bible Standard College in Eugene.
She married Albert Cleo Armitage in Lorane June 27, 1959.
She lived in many parts of the world with her husband who was in the U.S. Army.
She originally came to Oregon in the mid-1940s and returned with her husband and son in 1983.
She was a homemaker.
She enjoyed camping, sewing, oil painting and taking care of her home and family.
Survivors include her husband; son: Damon Armitage, of Little Rock, Ark.; granddaughter: Kira Leanne Armitage of Little Rock, Ark.; and brother: Horace Woody of Cottage Grove.
Visitation was held Aug. 4 and a service was held Aug. 5 at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove.
Interment was at Fir Grove Cemetery.
Orville E. White
1914-2004
Orville E. White, 90, a lifelong resident of the area, died Saturday from age-related causes.
A memorial service is scheduled for today at 11 a.m. at Living Faith Christian Fellowship in Cottage Grove.
Interment will follow at Taylor Lane Cemetery in Cottage Grove. Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
He was born March 17, 1914, to Charles and Ida White in Beaver Creek.
He married Zyla Raye La Blue in Coquille March 8, 1934.
He was a log truck owner and operator and was retired from Bohemia Western Trucking.
He enjoyed horses, rodeo competition and rodeo announcing and fishing.
He was a member of Living Faith Christian Fellowship of Cottage Grove, Cottage Grove Riding Club and Yoncalla Riding Club.
Survivors include his wife; sons: Richard White of Portland and Keith White of Metz; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mable Florence Crooks
1915-2004
Mable Florence Crooks, 88, of Cottage Grove, died Sept. 26 due to congestive heart failure.
Visitation will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel.
A service will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel and interment will be at Shields Cemetery in Cottage Grove.
She was born Sept. 29, 1915, in Elmira to Clare and Kate (Allegar) Ross.
She grew up in Marshfield and Coos Bay.
She married Clifford Crooks in 1936.
The couple lived in Lorane until they moved to Cottage Grove in 1947.
She was a homemaker and a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, country music and she especially enjoyed her family.
In the 1930s and 1940s, she and her husband enjoyed riding their Harley Davidson motorcycles.
Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law: Darryl and Billie Crooks of Creswell and Rodney Crooks of Cottage Grove; grandchildren: Shannon, Darin and Jason Crooks, all of Cottage Grove; great-grandchildren: B.J., Brandon, Autumn and Derek of Cottage Grove; and nieces: Peggy Sayles of Cottage Grove and Barbara Keep of Eugene.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Aug. 22, 1988, granddaughter, Janelle Crooks on Oct. 27, 1994, and great-grandson, Jalen Crooks, Dec. 25, 2000.
