Madge A. Johnson
1919-2004
Madge A. Johnson, a lifelong resident of Cottage Grove, died July 20 at the age of 85 from age-related causes.
She was born March 12, 1919, in Cottage Grove to George and Susie (Woodard) Carlile.
She graduated from Cottage Grove High School.
She married Murland Johnson in Cottage Grove Aug. 26, 1938.
She was a homemaker and operated Madge's Knit and Stitch Shop.
She enjoyed china painting, porcelain dolls, quilting, helping the needy and tatting.
She received numerous china painting awards won at the Lane County Fair.
She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Cottage Grove.
Survivors include her son: Michael L. Johnson of Keswick, Va.; sisters: Grace Mentzel of Days Creek and Marguerite Roehl of Kanab, Utah; brother: George Carlile of Hoodsport, Wash.; and grandchildren: Heather and Nicholas Johnson.
A service was held Thursday at Fir Grove Cemetery followed by interment.
Smith-Lund-Mills was in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Springfield Hospice.
Cody James Johnson
2000-2004
Cody James Johnson, 3, of Spokane, Wash., died July 17 from injuries sustained in a horse riding accident.
He was born Oct. 19, 2000, in Spokane, Wash., to Bob and Vickie Johnson.
He enjoyed the outdoors, swimming, camping and watching fish.
He liked to ride in helicopters and loved motorized vehicles.
He was on the go all the time.
He knew people from all over the world because his dad was in the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors include his parents; sister: Stephanie Johnson of Spokane, Wash.; grandparents: Sandy and Tom Johnson of Crowheart, Wyo., and Clete and Ellie Evans of Whitehouse, Texas; great-grandmother: Junie Evans of Redlands, Calif.; great uncle: Richard Wright of Yoncalla, and numerous aunts and uncles.
A service was held at the Johnson Family Ranch in Yoncalla Friday.
A private cremation was held under the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Medical Center, Spokane, Wash., or the Children's Miracle Network.
George Herbert Rose
1929-2004
George Herbert Rose, a five-year resident of Cottage Grove, died July 21 at the age of 74 from natural causes.
He was born Sept. 15, 1929, in Springfield, Mass., to Thomas and Claudia Rose.
He graduated from Commerce High School in Springfield, Mass.
He married Audrey Rose in East Springfield, Mass., Nov. 3, 1950.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951-1955.
He worked for Package Machinery, Spalding Golf and Electorlux and was a draftsman.
He enjoyed home repair and improvement and motorcycle riding.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law: Darlene and Michael Davison of Cottage Grove; son: Alan Rose of Phoenix, Ariz.: grandsons and spouse: Cory Davison of Cottage Grove, Craig and Nicole Davison of Cape Coral, Fla., and Alan Rose Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz.; granddaughter: Rene of Springfield, Mass., and brothers and sisters: Kenneth, Thomas, Jack, Claudia and Joyce.
No service was planned.
Elvie L. Hughes
1931-2004
Elvie L. Hughes, of Dorena, died July 20 at the age of 73 from renal failure.
He was born June 27, 1931, with his twin brother, Elzie, to John and Lillian Hughes in Zafra, Okla.
He married Lillian Bennett in October 1950 in Mena, Ark.
He worked as a long-haul truck driver in the Southwest before moving to Oregon in 1954.
He worked in the lumber industry for most of his life.
He was employed with Weyerhaeuser Lumber Co. at three different operations, including a trimmer operator, over a 28-year period before retiring in 1989.
He enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting, working puzzles and coin collecting.
He loved animals and his family had lots of pets over the years.
He is survived by his wife; daughter: Elizabeth Whelan of Cobden, Ill.; sons: Daniel Hughes of Conestoga, Penn., Steven Hughes of Springfield and David Hughes of Cottage Grove; longtime companion: Lori Gilliss of Cottage Grove and their dog, Chopper; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Elzie, who was killed in the Korean War.
The brothers were the youngest of a family of 12 children.
Elvie was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
A service was held Monday at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel followed by interment at Sears Cemetery.
