Helen R. Hill
Helen R. Hill, 82, of Ashland, died Sunday (July 18, 2004) in Portland. A private service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Saint Vincent de Paul's Beacon of Hope, P.O. Box 1663, Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Helen Kennedy, Feb. 10, 1922, in Missoula, MT. She moved to Billings when she was 9. Helen graduated from Billings High School and Billings Normal School. For four years, she was a teacher in a one-room school house in rural Montana. She married David F. Hill, Feb. 20, 1941. The couple moved to Ashland in 1952.

Helen worked for 30 years at Ideal Drugstore in Ashland.

She is survived by five children: Linda Spencer, Alexandria, VA, Nancy Fox, Milwaukie, OR, Mary Carter, Port Orford, Kathy Morgan, Medford, David M. Hill, Ashland; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her brother William M. Kennedy; and a granddaughter, Kate Scofield.

Winifred Joy James
The graveside service for Joy James will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mrs. James, 73, of Ashland, died July 17, at a private care facility in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's disease, 1050 NW 2nd Ave., Portland, OR 97219 or to the Southern Oregon Human Society, 2910 Table Rock Road, Medford.

She was born on Dec. 21, 1930 in Klamath Falls, OR. The daughter of Harold and Esther Simmers. She attended school in Klamath Falls, graduating from Klamath Union High School. Joy spent many summers at the family ranch on Spencer Creek near Keno, OR.

On Sept. 25, 1950 she married Orville C. James in Reno, NV. They moved to Medford that year and then to Ashland in 1955 where they made their home and raised their family.

Joy was involved in the Home Extension program and the Ashland Elks Lodge Elkettes.

She enjoyed gardening, crafts, bowling, bunko, and hunting for a good bargain. She was a great cook and Master Gardener.

Joy is survived by a daughter, Georgia Lynn Siebenlist of Medford; a son, Larry Orville James of Medford; a brother, Harold Simmers of Klamath Falls; four granddaughters, Tara, Jenna, Heidi and Whitney of Medford; a grandson, Justin of Medford. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orville, and an infant daughter, Teresa Dawn James.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Memorial Park & Mortuary, Medford.

Doris Drew Lassen
Doris Drew Lassen, 95, of Medford, died Monday, July 12, 2004 at her residence.
Arrangements: Litwiller - Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

John H. Yaple
John H. Yaple, 89, a gentleman, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away July 11, 2004 in Medford.

He was born in Braddyville, Iowa, growing up on a family farm. As a young man, John worked many jobs during the great depression in the Public Works program from the West Coast to Kansas City, ending up in Twin Falls, Idaho. John worked in the appliance business, eventually opening M&Y Electric in Twin Falls. He met the love of his life, Elizabeth "Libby" Shown and they were married June 15th, 1940. John moved to Ashland in 1950 and opened the Park View Department Store next to Lithia Park with Al Lohman. They sold the store in 1975 and John was able to devote more time to his favorite hobby, the game of GOLF.

John was an avid golfer, playing until his late 80's. He was featured in the Mail Tribune at age 82 for walking 9 holes of golf three days a week and making 4 holes-in-one during his lifetime. He spent hours making turquoise jewelry for his grandchildren, playing cards, fishing and studying investments. John taught his grandchildren to pick blackberries in the summer for his blackberry cobbler.

He was a very gentle man who never raised his voice in anger or mistreated anyone. When Libby would tell her children "wait until your father comes home," they knew they were home free.

He was active in the Chamber of Commerce, the Lion's Club and BPOE. John was an avid Grizzly fan and volunteered time on the Ashland High School finance committee.

John is survived by his two children; John W. Yaple, wife Sandy, and Jane Y. Stormer of Medford; five grandchildren, Neil Stormer, Ame Stormer of Washington, DC, Brody Yaple, Cody Yaple, wife Lisa Yaple of Bothell, WA, Samantha Christensen, husband Dr. Nathan Christensen of Rochester NY; two great-grandchildren, Sophia Yaple and Clara Christensen. John was preceded in death by his parents Alfa and Willard, an older brother George, his wife of 57 years Libby and son-in-law Jay Stormer.

He will be remembered for his dignity, honesty, patience and setting the kind of example we all try to live up to. He will be greatly missed.

A private service will be held at Waterford at Three Fountain at a later date. Contributions can be made to the Junior Golf program at Cedar Links Golf Course, 3155 Cedar Links Drive, Medford, OR 97504, Attention Scott. Arrangements made by Rogue Valley Funeral Alternative.

Charlotte L. Hull
Charlotte Luella Hull, 94, mother, teacher, and friend, died on July 5th in Eugene, OR, where she had spent the last few years.

Charlotte was born on January 6, 1910, in Mackay, ID, to Wilhelmina (Willa) and Warren Hoag. While she was still very young the family moved to Maytown, WA, where her father was a telegraph operator and station agent for the Milwaukee Railroad. Charlotte began college in Ellensburg, WA.

She married George B. Hull on April 28th, 1934. The couple lived in Portland while George completed dental school. They moved to Ashland in 1938. They were divorced in 1949, and Charlotte remained in Ashland with their three children. Charlotte returned to college and completed her teaching credential in 1950 from what was then Southern Oregon College.

She loved working with young children and taught elementary grades for 25 years, at Walker School in Ashland from 1951 through 1964 and subsequently at Gold Street School in Yreka, CA. She formally retired in 1975. Charlotte was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Ashland for over 55 years.

She was a member of the Tudor Guild and a hostess at the Elizabethan theater for 40 years. She belonged to Chapter AC of PEO for six decades. A lover of music, Charlotte enjoyed singing in the church choir, playing piano and violin and attending local concerts.

She enjoyed puttering in her flower garden, helping with projects such as Meals on Wheels, and reading. She traveled to Germany, Italy, Egypt, and England and was noted for her active mind and her many interests.

In addition to her three children, Dr. Steve Hull of Eugene, Gordon Hull of Ashland, and Margaret Hull McCartney of Ashland, Charlotte is survived by four granddaughters, one great grandson, a niece and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her only sister and one grandson.

A memorial service at Trinity Episcopal Church in Ashland is being arranged for later this summer. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute in Charlotte's name to the music fund at Trinity, 44 North 2nd Street, Ashland.

Lola W. Jones
Lola Wilda (Shepard) Jones, 87, passed away in Ashland, OR on Friday, July 2, 2004. Interment was held at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mrs. Jones was born Dec. 26, 1916 in Lima, IA. She played organ, piano and guitar in all of the places she lived and at church.

Lola married Frank Olic who preceded her in death in 1982.

She later married Joseph E. Jones in June 1954. He preceded her in death in 2001.

Survivors include; her daughters, Barbara Olic-Hamilton of Boise, ID, Ruth Painter of Ashland, OR; sons, Ronald B. Jones of Elgin, IL and Richard E. Jones of Springfield, IL; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives.

Jean Smith Battenburg
Jean Smith Battenburg died on July 3rd in Ashland, Oregon where she had resided since 1999. She was preceded in death by her husband Bernard Battenburg and is survived by her son John Battenburg of Vacaville, CA and her daughter Susan Powell of Ashland.

She was the devoted grandmother of Leslie-Anne Bain, Scott Battenburg, Sarah Powell, and Jay Powell and great grandmother of Christina Bain, and Miranda Jean Powell.

Jean was born in Chicago on May 28th, 1913. She received her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Illinois and returned to Chicago where she taught for many years. Her career was highlighted by successful grant writing for creative programs for disadvantaged youth.

After retirement in 1978 she moved to her favorite city, San Francisco, where she lived for more than 20 years in the Twin Peaks neighborhood overlooking the bay. This was home base for travels around the world which included Europe, China, and circumnavigating South America on a freighter.

She also volunteered for cultural organizations including ACT. Jean was an accomplished needle worker and has left her family many treasured pieces of needlepoint art.

Private memorial services will be held at a later time.

John Rodgers
John Rodgers, beloved husband of Ruth B. Rodgers passed peacefully after 82 years on June 21, 2004 of age related causes.

He was born to Charles and Margaret Rodgers on Oct. 11, 1921 in Fall River, Massachusetts. Mr. Rodgers graduated from Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts in 1940.

On Dec. 11, 1943 he married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Braga who survives. He proudly served in WWII as a Naval Aerologist from 1942 to 1945. They moved to Eugene in 1952 where he and Ruth raised five children. In 1974 he moved to Ashland, in 1986 he retired, and they moved to Rogue River.

Mr. Rodgers was employed in the insurance industry, food industry and retail industry during his life. He retired as a store manager of Bi-Mart Corp., in Ashland.

He enjoyed serving with the Boy Scouts of America as a Scout Master, camping, boating, traveling, reading, politics and most especially all family activities.

John was an avid Duck fan for over 50 years.

He will be remembered by his family and plethora of friends as a gentle, loving supportive patriarch with an extraordinary sense of quip and humor.

In addition to his wife of 60 years, Ruth B. Rodges survivors include; three sons, John Jr. and wife Denise of Jacksonville, OR, Jeffrey and his wife Lisa of Ashland, David and his wife Kaniz of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; two daughters, Shiela Clemans and husband Steve of Port Orchard, WA, Sharon Harbert and her husband Joe of Eugene; 20 grandchildren and many adoring great-grandchildren.

John was a lifelong Catholic and a member of Our Lady of the River Catholic Church in Rogue River, OR.

A private service will be held in Eugene, OR by his immediate family members.
