Joseph 'Joey' R. Milovich

Joseph "Joey" Robert Milovich, 27, of Ashland, died unexpectedly Saturday, April 17, 2004.

Joey was born in Medford on Sept. 8, 1976 and lived nearly all of his life in Ashland. He graduated from Ashland High School in 1995 and has been employed at Green Valley Pump , Inc. in Talent for the past 9 years. He was a lifelong basketball enthusiast both on and off the court and an avid bow hunter and outdoorsman.

Survivors in addition to his beloved fiance' Misty Dillon of Ashland, include his parents, Cathy and Randy Hagstrom of Ashland and Allen & Lani Milovich of Yreka, CA; sisters, Johanna Milovich of Hillsboro, OR, Kendra Callahan of Macdoel, CA; brother, Jason Cairns of Ashland; his grandparents, Kathryn Moore of Ashland, Robert Moore of Talent, Robert and Millie Dais of Yreka, CA; and numerous loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and lifelong friends. He will be missed enormously by all.

A memorial service will be held at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland on Thursday, April 22, 2004 at 11 a.m. Reception for all will be held immediately after the service at 730 N. Laurel, Ashland. In addition, a graveside service will be held Friday, April 23, at 11 a.m. in Evergreen Cemetery, Yreka, CA.

Memorial contributions may be made to, The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, 2291 W. Broadway, P.O. Box 8249, Missoula, MT 59807, whose mission is to ensure the future of elk, and other wildlife and their habitat.

Louise P. Burkland

The memorial service for Louise Pauline Burkland will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 24, 2004 at the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland. Officiating will be Rev. Anthony Schultz of Grace Lutheran Church, Ashland.

Mrs. Burkland, 75, of Ashland, died Saturday, April 17, 2004 at home. She was born April 13, 1929 at North Branch, Minnesota, the daughter of Laura and Emil Pohl. On January 26, 1949 at Minneapolis, Minnesota she married Curtis Burkland who survives. In 1950, she moved to Southern California and to Horse Creek, California in 1974. Mrs. Burkland was a registered nurse and worked in a number of nursing homes and hospitals in Southern California. Mrs. Burkland moved to Ashland in 2000. She enjoyed traveling, back packing and homemaking.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are: two sons, Bruce Donald Burkland of Camarillo, CA, and David Michael Burkland of Chico, CA; two daughters, Kathleen Marie Burkland of Cotati, CA. and Susan Carol Burkland of Carlsbad, CA; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Arrangements under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Harvey M. Francis

Harvey M. Francis, (Papa Harv)83, of Grants Pass died Friday, April 16, 2004.

Funeral Service at 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 23, 2004, Redwood Country Church.

Interment at 2:00 p.m. at Eagle Point Cemetery.

Arranged by Hull & Hull Funeral Directors.

Anna G. Retter

Anna G. Retter, 89, of Ashland died Wednesday, (April 21, 2004) at home.

A celebration of her life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 24, 2004, at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Warren Keith Bixler

Private family services have been held for Warren Keith Bixler, 83, of Ashland, who died Saturday, April 17, 2004 at home.

He was born November 2, 1920 at Clarence, Iowa the son of Verva and Floyd Bixler. He is a graduate of COE College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and worked as a journalist and writer. From 1944 to 1946 he served in the Merchant Marines. Mr. Bixler enjoyed reading, music, and football. He was a member of Toastmasters International.

Survivors include: three daughters, Barbara Sharrock, Cathy Bixler, and Becki Hall; two sons, Jim Bixler, and Bo Bixler; 10 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.

Deshler 'Dash' Coleman Lay

Deshler "Dash" Coleman Lay, 91, died Tuesday (April 27, 2004) at Farmington Square assisted care facility in Medford. A graveside service will be held for Mr. Lay at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 30, at the Mountain View Cemetery in Ashland. Visitation will be available on Thursday afternoon from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday morning from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Chaplain Paul Hagedorn, of the Providence Hospital Hospice Care Unit, will officiate.

Dash was born on June 1, 1912, to Joseph and Katie Lay, a pioneering farm family in Union County, Oregon. He spent most of his childhood on the family farm in "The Park," a pristine area of woods, springs and fields in the Beagle Creek drainage, just north of the small community of Medical Springs. He attended a neighborhood grade school, and high schools in both Union and Baker City, graduating from Baker High School.

On Christmas Eve of 1933, Dash married Myrtle Inman of Payette, Idaho. After a few years of farming in Union and Baker Counties, the couple moved to Haines, where he was employed as Parts Manager for the Haines Commercial Equipment Company, a major farm supplier and International Harvester dealership in Baker County. In 1956, Dash and Myrtle moved to Baker City, where he became employed as Stock Manager for Levinger's Rexall Drug Store, a locally owned department store and pharmacy. He remained there until his retirement.

In September of 2002, Dash and Myrtle moved from Baker City to Medford to be near their only child, Kerry Lay, and his wife, Janice, who are long-time Ashland residents. They resided at Fountain Plaza until Mr. Lay's health recently required his transfer to the near-by Farmington Square. Dash and Myrtle celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past Christmas Eve.

Dash is survived by his wife, Myrtle; their son, Kerry and his wife, Janice; grandchildren, Geoffrey Lay of Tualatin, Oregon, Bradley Lay of Phoenix, Arizona, and Christopher Lay of Glendale, Arizona; sisters, Gay Lerwill of Redding, California and Errolo Burford of College Place, Washington; five great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and four brothers.

Dash was a master carpenter and wood-worker, who particularly enjoyed using a lathe to make decorative household items. He was also an avid gardener, and he enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Dash embodied the terms "friend" and "neighbor." He was always very well-liked and appreciated for his generosity, helpful nature and sense of humor. He was hard working, a kind and loving husband and father and grandfather, and a wonderful provider to his family. Everyone who has been touched by Dash will feel a great loss.

Myrtle will continue to reside at Fountain Plaza in Medford. She asks that memorial contributions be made to any charity of choice, but particularly recommends the Providence Hospital Hospice Unit.

Edna May Nelson

Edna May Nelson, 86, of Ashland, died Tuesday (April 27, 2004) at Ashland Community Hospital. Private inurnment will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Tower, MN.

Mrs. Nelson was born May 5, 1917 in Biwabik, MN to Matt H. and Anna K. Mickelson. She graduated from Biwabik High School. On December 18, 1937 in Virginia, MN she married Arthur E. Nelson, who preceded her in death on October 5, 1994. Mrs. Nelson moved to Ashland in 1964 and worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at both Ashland Community Hospital and Linda Vista Care Center.

Survivors include two sons, Rodney A. Nelson and Jon C. Nelson, both of Ashland; sister, Dorothy Gentile of Gilbert, MN; and ten grandchildren, Nicolle, Melissa, Kori, Andrew, Sarah, Mary, Michael, Joseph, Dale and Maureen.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Judith A. Ranney Spillman

Judith Alice Ranney Spillman died peacefully after a two-year illness with cancer on April 27, 2004. She was 65.

Judy was born March 11, 1939 in Rocky River, Ohio where she spent her childhood. Judy attended Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio where she met her husband Lynn. She graduated from Ohio State University with a B.A. in Home Economics. Her life's work emphasized helping and caring for others. She was a teacher, home maker, devoted wife and mother, as well as a very active volunteer with numerous community organizations. Most recently Judy worked with the Santa Ynez Valley Humane Society thrift store in Solvang, CA. The American Red Cross has honored Judy for her generous, lifetime donations of blood.

Judy was a very skilled craftsperson in many media including her true passion of textile weaving in which she attained a high level of artistry. She lived with her family in numerous states. She enjoyed spending time at her second home in Ashland during the last five years and was a member of the Lithia Artists' Guild.

Her father, William Ranney, preceded Judy in death. She is survived by her mother, Charlotte Ranney of Santa Maria, CA; her husband, Lynn of Santa Ynez, CA, sons, John (Karin) of Ashland and Paul (Lisa) of San Pedro, CA; granddaughter, Ella (Paul & Lisa); and grandsons, Benjamin and Dieter (John & Karin.)

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to either: Santa Ynez Valley Humane Society, 111 Commerce Dr, Buelton, CA 93427 or Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care-Serenity House, 222 E. Canon Perdido, Santa Barbara, CA 93101. Please note: "In Memory of Judy Spillman."

Memorial service will be held at Bethania Lutheran Church, 603 Atterdag Rd., Solvang, CA on Saturday, May 1 at 9 a.m. A reception will immediately follow at the church.

Orace L. (Caulkins) Wolfe

Orace L. Wolfe, born April 14, 1916 in Airlie, Oregon of Polk County, passed away April 23rd at Waterford Three Fountains Nursing Home in Medford, Oregon.

Orace is the daughter of Oscar & Jessie Caulkins. Oscar Caulkins passed away prior to the birth of Orace. Orace's mother, Jessie married Cecil (Pete) Hollister on October 19, 1925 in Spokane, Washington. Orace graduated from Corvallis High School in June of 1933. She then attended Oregon State College until the birth of her son (Duane, in 1938) interrupted her education.

Orace married Harvey Loman Wolfe of Antelope, Oregon on September 5th, 1937. Harvey and Orace lived in Eugene since April of 1942. Harvey passed away in June of 2002. In July of 2003 Orace moved to Phoenix, Oregon to be near several members of her family. Orace served as Hot Lunch Supervisor of the Bethel School District, in Eugene, for 30 years. During that time she became a charter member of the Oregon School Food Service Association and served a period as their President.

Along with Harvey, Orace was an active member of the First Christian Church of Eugene. She loved working with the young people at the church and served as an associate advisor of the church youth groups. She was active in the Christian Women's Fellowship and served as one of their Presidents. Orace was a member of Helmetta Temple of Pythia Sisters. She was a constant companion to Harvey in his many activities. These included 4-H, Cub & Boy Scouts, Lions Club, Knights of Pythias and newspaper delivery for the Eugene Register Guard. Orace's hobbies over the years, were photography, reading, crossword puzzles and camping. She especially enjoyed being with a group called the "Has-Beens" which was made up of parents of the church youth groups and Boy Scout troop.

Surviving Orace, are her son; Duane Wolfe of Phoenix, Oregon, sisters; Dot Blanchard, of Olympia, Washington and Pat Blue of McMinnville, Oregon. Orace has 8 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Remembrances may be sent to: First Christian Church, 1166 Oak Street, Eugene Oregon 97401
