James P. Vanderlip, Sr.

James P. Vanderlip Sr., 90, of Ashland, died Thursday (March 11, 2004) at his home.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Center, Ashland.

Joseph F. Giusto

A private memorial service for Joseph F. Giusto will be held at the Holy Sepulchre in Hayward, CA. Mr. Giusto, 84, died March 9, 2004 at home.

A rancher before entering the U.S. Army in WWII for three and one-half years, serving as a company clerk and later transferred to regimental headquarters intelligence section, rank T-4. Chosen to a cadre to help form a new army division. Attended a course at the University of Mississippi for advanced army administration and a course related to army intelligence training at New Jersey. After the European Theater, the division was chosen to enter the Pacific Theater but the conflict there ended.

Upon honorable discharge, he entered the U.S. Postal Service for thirty years. His official duties included all facets of a postal installation and retired as a Postmaster for a classified First Class Office.

Mr. Giusto enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing and woodworking. On June 9, 1962, he married Juanita Ashlock and moved to Ashland, OR. in Sept. 1975. Juanita died in Nov. 1997.

Survivors include two step-sons, Norman and Rodney and a daughter-in-law, Marilyn. Arrangements: Perl Funeral Service.

Richard Alvin Strong

Richard Alvin Strong, 71, of Talent, went to be with the Lord on the dawn of Sunday, March 14, 2004.

He was born on September 1, 1932, in Lawrence, Kansas to Lonnie Alvin and Ona Bell Strong. Richard grew up in Myrtle Creek, served in the Korean War, and settled in Ashland after marrying Betty Tripp. Later they moved their family to Talent. Richard retired from the United Grocers in 1992, after 30 years as a driver.

He was a Master Gardener and farmer. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, restoring early model John Deere Tractors, and his church, Calvary Baptist of Ashland, where he once served as Music Director.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Strong of Talent; sons, Stephen Strong of Montrose, Colorado, Wayne Strong of Springfield, and Wade Strong of Talent; daughter, Wanda Taylor of Ashland; brothers, Dudley and Larry Lee; sister, Sonja; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 18th at the Eagle Point Veteran's Cemetery.

Verna Wallace

A graveside service for Verna Wallace will be at noon Monday, March 22, at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford. Rev. . Daniel Beteta will officiate.

Mrs. Wallace, 91, of Grants Pass, formerly of Ashland, died Monday (March 15, 2004) at Highland Care Center, Grants Pass. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.

Verna was born on May 6, 1912, in Bandon, OR, to Hans and Leila (Perry) Adams. She moved to Ashland in 1941 and then in recent years to Grants Pass. She married Charles Bruce Wallace June 7, 1940 in Bandon who preceded her in death in 1997. Verna was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include a son, Gary Wallace of Grants Pass; a sister Melda Holmgreen of Eastside, OR; two brothers, Don Goddard of Bandon, Frank Adams of Chestertown, MD; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.She was preceded in death by her daughter, Donna in 1977.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Central Point Chapel.

George Albert Kuhl

George Albert Kuhl, 93, of Ashland, died Sunday (March 21, 2004) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Alvin Eugene Converse

Alvin Eugene Converse, 90, of Ashland, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at home.

Henry George Buzza

Henry George Buzza, 93, of Trail, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at the Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland.

Evalyn E. Bennett

Evalyn E. Bennett, 93, of Ashland, died Friday, March 26, 2004 at home.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Thelma M. Lininger

Thelma M. Lininger, age 88, died Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at Rogue Valley Medical Center. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Anna Maria Creekside (822 Golf View Drive, Medford), her former residence.

Thelma Myrtle Stringer was born to Lena (Lindsay) Stringer and William Scott Stringer on May 2, 1915 on the family homestead along the Applegate River in Josephine, County. She was a descendent of early pioneers who crossed the plains on the Oregon Trail in 1846, searching for a safer southern route which became the Applegate Trail. She attended New Hope School, which was a one room schoolhouse and graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1935. She then graduated from Southern Oregon Normal School (SONS) with a degree in teaching and taught in a one room schoolhouse in Azalea, OR.

At SONS, now Southern Oregon University, she met Raymond B. Lininger and they were married on May 22, 1938. Raymond died on March 19, 1965. Mrs. Lininger was the last surviving member of the second generation of the owners of the M. C. Lininger and Sons general contracting and material supply business. That business eventually became LTM, Incorporated.

She was a member of Fortnightly Study Club of Ashland for 50 years and a 41 year member of PEO Chapter AC in Ashland and of Chapter BE in Medford. She was also a Rogue Valley Medical Center Auxiliary volunteer for 25 years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Medford. Mrs. Lininger had traveled extensively and did so until her health prevented her from continuing.

Survivors include, a daughter, Carol Hergert; a son Dale Lininger and his wife Judy, all of Medford; a granddaughter Leah Rozett and her husband Rocky; great-granddaughter Malia, of Central Point, and grandson Joel Hergert of Medford, as well as by grandson Jeff Lininger and his wife Wendy and their daughter Callie of Medford and grandson Rob Lininger and his wife Elise of Bozeman, Montana. Other survivors include her sister, Lavada Middleton of Oroville, CA, and her brother Cal Stringer and his wife Doris of Medford. In addition to her husband Raymond, she was preceded in death by her brother Wayne Stringer, who was killed on Wake Island in World War II, and by her parents.

Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Rogue Valley Dialysis Patient Trust Fund, 2868 Creekside Circle, Medford, OR 97504.

Robert M. Clark

Robert M. Clark, 89, of Ashland, died Monday, (March 29, 2004) at home.

Darwin Bjerke
Aug. 18, 1941-March 29, 2004

Darwin Bjerke died peacefully, with his wife, Sandy and sister, Kathy at his side, in their home on March 29, 2004.

Darwin, 62, was born August 18, 1941 in Ulen, Minnesota. He had a B.A in Psychology and Anthropology from Moorehead University in Minnesota, and a Master's degree in Psychology from the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, Palo Alto, California. Darwin began his professional career as a teacher and taught 20 years.

In 1970, he founded Poseidon School in Los Angeles, California; which was an alternative Jr. High and High School.

In 1982, he moved to the Rogue Valley, where he worked as a professional counselor. He worked at Plowshare Treatment Center, Family Friends, Community Works, and most recently, Southern Oregon Child Study and Treatment Center, and was in private practice with Child and Family Psychiatric Center of Southern Oregon. Darwin's desire was to make a positive difference in the world and because of that he profoundly served his community with a gentle spirit, kindness, love and compassion.

Darwin is survived by his adoring wife of 13 years, Sandy Bjerke of Medford; daughter, Amira Bjerke of Ashland; parents, Lavern and Ihlor Bjerke of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; and sister, Kathy Bjerke of Richwood, Minnesota.

Viewing will be March 31, 2004. For information call 776-0821. A celebration of Darwin's life will be held in May at the Yeshe Nyingpo Buddhist Retreat Center near Ashland.
Because of Darwin's love of nature and his desire for environmental preservation, he requested instead of flowers, contributions to any of the following charities: Sierra Club, Wilderness Society, and Ospirg; and Southern Poverty Law Center (Teaching Tolerance), and Yeshe Nyingpo Buddhist Retreat Center which Darwin helped to build.
