Leland Enos Ballard

Leland Enos Ballard, 94 of Ashland, died on Tuesday (January 13, 2004) at his home.

Arrangements will be handled by Perl Funeral Home.

Elizabeth Rose Stanek

Elizabeth Rose Stanek died Jan. 13, 2004 at age 45.

Liz was born Jan. 26, 1958, in Oceanside, Calif. She moved to Ashland with her family in 1969 and graduated from Ashland High School in 1976. She lived in Ashland and Talent for most of her life, but worked in Portland, OR as a legal secretary in the early 1980s.

Survivors include her brothers, Rick, Chris, and Greg.

Graveside service is Jan. 25, 2004, 1 p.m., at Ashland Cemetery on Morton Street.

Remembrances, in lieu of flowers, can be made to Ashland Community Hospital Foundation.

Stanley Curtis Jobe

Stanley Curtis Jobe, 86, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004 at Providence Medical Center in Medford.

A Memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004 in the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland. Family and friends are invited to attend a reception immediately following the church service to be held in Calvin Fellowship Hall of the Church.

Stanley was born October 14, 1917 in Barnett, Missouri. He was the eldest of nine children to Arthur and Dollie Jobe.

He served in the Army Air Force and Infantry during World War II. Stan left for North Africa on October 30, 1942. His unit landed near Casablanca, Morocco. He was in charge of removing wounded and deceased personnel.

Stan married Doris Clark in Billings, Montana on Jan. 19, 1946.

He graduated from Willamette University. While teaching Spanish part-time, he worked toward a Master's degree at the University.

In Burns, Oregon, Mr. Jobe taught, became assistant principal and then Superintendent.

In 1956, Mr. Jobe became Principal of Ashland High School. In 1958, he became the Superintendent of Ashland Schools, a position he held for twenty-two years.

He served in many civic and professional organizations. He was also very active in the Presbyterian Church of Ashland. Stan was an elder and was chairman of the Calvin Hall building program.

Stan loved the outdoors. He had a boat and fished for several years on the ocean. He also took up painting after his retirement and worked a lot with his computer.

He is survived by a daughter, Janis Kuchler and son-in-law, John Kuchler; grandchildren, Nicole Kuchler and Andre Michael Kuchler of Pendleton, OR; two brothers of Sedalia, MO; one sister of Sedalia, MO; two sisters of Versailles, MO; and one sister of Stover, MO. Stan was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, and one brother.

Helene Louise Wright

Helene Louise Wright, 78, of Ashland, died Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Frances H. Pease

Frances H. Pease died Thursday (January 22, 2004) at Ashwood Senior Home, Ashland, OR. She was 88.

The oldest of six children, Fran was born to Nettie and Peter Hexom, October 8, 1915 at Flaxville, MT. She graduated from Flaxville High School then attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN and Iowa State College, in Ames, IA majoring in textiles and clothing. On October 12, 1942, she married 2nd Lt. Ralph K. Pease. At the end of World War II, they returned to Ralph¹s home in Farragut, IA where they raised two daughters and participated fully in the many activities of a small town.

Fran was a member of the United Methodist Church, WSCS, and the Order of Eastern Star. Devoted to her family, both immediate and extended, she was an avid gardener and photographer, a marvelous seamstress, and a pretty good bridge player. After the death of her husband in 1971, she moved to Decorah, IA then to Roseville, CA. In 1983, she arrived in Ashland, OR. There she was a member of the First United Methodist Church and active in its Super Seniors and United Methodist Women.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers infant Harold, Allan and Philip and husband, Ralph.

She is survived by her daughters, Pamela (Daniel) Chipman of South Bend, IN and Lynda "Pix" (Ron) Cue of Ashland, OR; four grandchildren, Shannon Chipman of Denver, CO, Ian Chipman of Chicago, IL, Amanda Cue of San Francisco, CA and Erin Cue of Ashland, OR; brother, A.D. Hexom, sister Ilo (George) Eichhorn and sister-in-law Jane Hexom, all of Roseville, CA and sister M. Jeanne Nelson, Modesto, CA.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 30, at the Ashland First United Methodist Church. Interment of ashes will be in Farragut, IA at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to the United Methodist Church in Ashland, OR or Farragut, IA, Providence Hospice, Medford, OR or a charity of the donor's choice.

Litwiller-Simonson Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.

Sandra Wilcox

Sandra Wilcox, 56, of Central Point, died Saturday (Jan. 24, 2004) at home.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Helene Louise Wright

Helene Louise Wright, 78, died January 21, 2004 at Linda Vista Care Center. She was born in San Francisco, CA., December 11, 1925 to Winfield and Louise G. Wright. She was employed as an office manager for an accounting firm in San Francisco until her retirement in 1979. She moved to Ashland to care for her mother. She was preceded in death by her parents, step-father Milton Jackson and her sister Blanche Dauenhauer. She enjoyed knitting, reading and playing the piano. She is survived by several nieces and nephews and their families, her dear friend Irene O'Neill and her cat, Kate. A Rosary will be said for Helene at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, Saturday, January 31, 2004 at 6:15 P.M. No other services are planned.

Marie Alberta Comtois

Marie Alberta Comtois, who resided at Oak Crest Assisted Living in Phoenix, Oregon since 1997, died January 27, 2004 from complications of age. She was 92 years old. Born in Beverly, Massachusetts, she was married to J. Edward Comtois for 59 years until his death in 1996. Before moving to the Rogue Valley in 1994, they made their home in Lawrence Massachusetts where Mrs. Comtois was a professional singer, concert pianist and vocal coach. She was a featured soloist with "The Vocalaires," a popular singing group appearing on radio in the greater Boston area, and sang for many church and synagogue services there. She is survived by her two children, George Comtois of Florida and Leona Mitchell of Ashland, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her remains will be interred with her husband's in a family plot in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

Lloyd E. Wenaus

Lloyd E. Wenaus, 87, of Talent, died Tuesday (January 27, 2004) at Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Joe Carpenter

Joe Carpenter, 67, of Eugene, died December 26, 2003. Joe was a Spanish teacher at Medford Mid High and South Medford High School. After his retirement he lived briefly in Ashland before moving to Eugene where he lived, loved, and played. His many friends will miss him.

A tribute to Joe Carpenter will be held at 4 p.m., Sat., Feb. 7th, 2004 at Habaneros Mexican Restaurant, 142 N. Front St., Medford.

Claudia Eliasen

Claudia Eliasen, resident of Talent, died on January 25th, 2004 in Palo Alto, CA. An announcement for her memorial service will be published at a later date.

As a child in Atlantic City, NJ, Claudia loved to spend time on the beach and at the Boardwalk. After Claudia attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison, she worked as a homemaker and loving mother. For three years, Claudia and her sons lived on a Kibbutz in Israel, after which time they moved to Ashland where she met her husband of 25 years, David Eliasen.

For 27 years, Claudia was well-respected in the community for the intensity, passion and care she put into her career as an advocate for the children of the Rogue Valley. During the first part of her career, she worked in a variety of settings for adolescents and troubled teens.

Later, Claudia served as a child protective worker for the State of Oregon. Her family and friends loved her for her warmth, compassion, selfless generosity and wonderful sense of humor. Claudia struggled with cancer during the last year of her life. During this year, she was fortunate enough to spend a great deal of time with her family and friends, and was delighted to share her final three months with her new granddaughter.

Claudia is survived by her husband David; her children Scott, Jason an Ari Langer and their partners; her sister Joan Gross and her granddaughter Lilah Caputi.

Memorial donations may be made to Children's Advocacy Center, 816 W. 10th St., Medford, OR 97501 or the American Cancer Society.
