Merl C. Howard

There will be gathering of family and friends to remember Merl C. Howard at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003 at the home of Pamela Nelson, 1286 Woodland Drive in Ashland. Mr. Howard passed away on July 31, 2003. For information, call 488-3178.

Audrey Hawk

The memorial services for Audrey Hawk will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, 1811 Ashland St. Ashland. Chaplain John Braund will officiate.

Audrey Hawk, 75, of Medford died Wednesday, Sept. 10 in Medford.

She was born Jan. 31, 1928 in Curwensville, Pa. where she graduated high school in 1946. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1994, living in Ashland until 1979 when she moved to Medford.

Audrey was active in community service. She served as president of the Parents Teachers Association, president of the Ashland League of Women Voters, president of the Winema Council of the Girl Scouts. She was also the first woman elected to serve in the Ashland City Council, from 1971-1975). Governor Tom McCall appointed her to the State Childcare Coordinating Council to serve a two year term. She was elected president of the Oregon Parks & Recreation Association and served as a board member of the League of Oregon Cities. She had managed the Mark Anthony Hotel, attained her Real Estate license and had worked for the past 27 years at Hemingways Vintage Homes.

Audrey loved family and enjoyed cooking.

Survivors include: Daughter, Bernadette Daniels, sons: Jeffrey Hawk and Harry G. Hawk, all of Rogue valley, sisters, Cathey Schroeder of Gladstone and Nadine Higbee, brothers, Forrest Hawk and Robert Hawk, all of the Rogue Valley, and 9 grand children.

Her husband, Harry E. Hawk, preceded her in death in 1969.

Robert S. Harkey

The memorial graveside service for Robert Sidney Harkey will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept., 20, 2003 at the Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland. Officiating will be Rev. John Braund.

Mr. Harkey, 62, of Ashland, died Sept. 6, 2003 at home. He was born Dec. 30, 1940 at Ashland, Oregon the son of Elva and Celo Harkey. He graduated from Ashland High School.

He served in the United States Navy for 13 years and worked for Delah Timber in White City as a truck driver. On Feb. 14, 1972 at Olongapo, Philippines he married Corazon Aquino who survives.

Mr. Harkey enjoyed woodworking and fishing. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and the SOFAA.

Surviving in addition to his wife Corazon, are his son Eric Harkey and wife Ethelyn, of Marysville, Wash.; two sisters Ruth H. Robinson of Albany. and Nina Simpson of Medford. and friend Norita Hyde of Ashland; and numerous nieces and nephews. One brother and one sister preceded him in death.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Joelle Elizabeth Winchell

Joelle Winchell was born March 18, 1985, to Roy and Lindy Winchell, in Ashland. She died Sept. 15, 2003, as the result of a car accident near Reedsport.

She grew up in Bandon off of Boak Road and was the senior class president of Bandon High School. She was a member of the National Honor Society and also was very active with the BHS speech team, with dramatic interpretation being her strong point. Joelle also was proud to be a part of the BHS dance team. Together, they took first place in Grants Pass during the 2002-2003 competition.

Joelle lived in LaPine from 1999 to 2002 and was very active in dance and drama. She achieved a perfect 4.0 grade-point average at LaPine High School, and was loved and respected by many teachers and students. She was enrolled in as many as five separate dance classes at All That Jazz in LaPine and performed publicly on several occasion. Her instructor spoke very highly of her and enlisted her help with choreography and with instructing other students.

Dance was her passion, and she was planning to continue dancing throughout her life. Joelle was a part of the BHS rally squad and enjoyed the team very much. Unfortunately, she died before ever having a chance to cheer at a game.

She was very much loved and will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her sisters, Dena Paulsen of Bandon, Carlie Winchell-Rackley of Eugene and Hallie Winchell of Kentucky; brothers, Erick and wife, April Winchell of LaPine, Shawn and wife, Michele Winchell of Bandon, Chris Winchell of Portland and Guy Winchell of Washington; aunt, Sarah Childs of Salinas, Calif.; uncles, Don Buffen of Ventura, Calif., and Steve Buffen of Santa Cruz, Calif.; and nieces and nephews, Ashley Eldridge, Jorden Richards, Kymberly Winchell, Zoe Winchell, Davin Winchell and Jenna Winchell.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lindy and Roy Winchell; and siblings, Joseph and Danielle Winchell.

The family suggests memorial contributions to benefit the Bandon High School Speech Team, in care of the Joelle Winchell Memorial Fund at Klamath First, 1095 S.E. Oregon Ave., Bandon, OR 97411.

JoAnn E. Shackelford

JoAnn Shackelford of Ashland died near Orleans, Calif. around Dec. 3, 2002, but her death was not confirmed to her family until recently. She is survived by her husband Jim Shackelford, also of Ashland.

Shackelford was born May 8, 1952 in Glendale, Calif. She met her husband at Colorado State University in 1970, where JoAnn received her Bachelor of Arts in Human Development, and they were married in Boulder, Colorado on June 3, 1973.

JoAnn had been a preschool teacher and director for almost 30 years. She was given the 1992 Dedicated Caregiver Award by KinderCare Learning Centers for saving five-year-old Zachary Norman's life with the Heimlich maneuver. She was an aerobic instructor for 25 years and won bike races and running races. When she was 50, she finished a close second in the Ashland Mountain Run (13 miles uphill).

JoAnn was known for being extremely generous with her time and energy, often watching single parents' children after hours for no fee. Her outside passions were hiking and running mountain trails alone and spending time at the ocean. She was one of the Oregon Coast Whale Watch Interpreters, and was a volunteer for the Hope Therapeutic Riding Program.

There will be a memorial gathering this 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at the Ashland Family YMCA soccer fields. Call Laurie Evans at the YMCA 482-9622 for information.

Sharon Billingsley

The Christian Mass for Sharon Billingsley will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, September 26, 2003 at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, Ashland. A reception will follow at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church. A private family interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery, Ashland.

Friends may call at the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003.

Mrs. Billingsley, 62, of Ashland, died Sept. 19, 2003 at home. She was born Oct. 26, 1940 in Detroit, Mich. and was raised in Beaumont, Calif.

In 1973 she moved to Ashland where she worked for Bi-Mart for 20 years, retiring in 2002. She enjoyed knitting, gardening and movies. She was a member of Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church in Ashland.

Surviving are: One daughter Michele Barlow of Ashland and one sister JoAnn Lebeck of Simi Valley, Calif. She was preceded in death by two brothers, her mother, Viola and her step-father Robert Johnson. Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Skyla Dawn Azzello

A memorial celebration of the life of Skyla Dawn Azzello will be held Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003 at 1:00 P.M., at the Cotton Memorial area of Lithia Park in Ashland.

Skyla Dawn Azzello, 27, of Ashland, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003 at Rogue Valley Medical Center, Medford.

Arrangements by Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

Elva Pearl Schweiger

Elva Pearl Schweiger, 86, of Talent, died Friday, September 26, 2003 at Ashland Community Hospital. Arrangements by Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Nat Silverman

After a beautiful and giving life of nearly 95 years, Nat Silverman passed away in Ashland on Sept. 21. A memorial service to celebrate the goodness he brought into this world will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Temple Emek Shalom, 1800 E. Main Street in Ashland.

Mr. Silverman, who was buried last week in Phoenix, Ariz., moved to Ashland in 1998 after the death of his wife of 66 years in order to be close to his son Ron and daughter-in-law Myra. He resided at Mountain View Retirement Residence and was considered to be "the most dapper of gentlemen." Among the many friends he made in the Rogue Valley, he was known for his graciousness and his wit.

Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Silverman moved to Los Angeles as a youth and then to Phoenix where for nearly a half century he was a prominent leader of the Jewish community. He made his living as a furniture salesman but spent an equal amount of time in community service. At one time or another he headed most Jewish organizations in Phoenix and received several lifetime achievement awards for his work.

In addition to Ron and Myra, he is survived by his son Andy, a professor of law at the University of Arizona in Tucson, and his daughter-in-law Starr. He is also survived by four grandchildren including Brooke Sanders Silverman, who resides in Ashland and teaches at Emek Shalom's pre-school, and two great grandchildren.
