Mildred Lorell Wellman

The funeral service for Mildred L. Wellman will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003 at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home , Ashland. Interment will follow in Scenic Hills memorial Park, Ashland. Friends may call the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home tonight from 5 to 7.

Mildred L. Wellman, 87, formerly of Ashland, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003 at Beverly Health Care Center, Federal Way, Wash.

Mrs. Wellman was born April 30, 1915 at Muhlenberg, Ky. To David McPherson and the former Arthula Baugh. She served in the US Army during W.W. II as a registered nurse. On Dec. 2, 1950 in Fairbanks, Alaska, she married Frank L. Wellman. She lived in Alaska from 1948 to 1973, when she and Mr. Wellman moved to Ashland. In 2002, she moved to Federal Way, Wash.

While in Alaska, she was a member of the Pioneers Igloo #8 in Fairbanks. After moving to Ashland, she was very active in the Ashland Elks Lodge #944, serving as president of the Elkettes. She was an avid gardener and bowler. She also volunteered her services as a private duty nurse for friends and community. She was a seamstress and operated Mickey's Alternations in Ashland.

Survivors include her son, David A. Wellman of Fairbanks, Alaska; daughters, Gloria Jean Faddis of Fairbanks, Alaska and Michelle and her husband Rick Crisp of Pacific, Wash.; her son-in-law, Ted DeLeon of Fairbanks, Alaska; seven grandchildren, Stacey Allen of Puyallup, Wash. Christopher DeLeon of North Pole, Alaska, Shad Palatino of Ashland, Rodney and Damien Wellman of Pacific, Wash. And Ricky Crisp Jr. and Alicia Crisp of Pacific, Wash.; one great granddaughter, Kaleigh Lorill DeLeon of North Pole, Alaska. She was preceded in death by her faithful husband, Frank, on Nov. 2, 1998 and by her daughter, Nancy DeLeon in June 2001.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and crematory, Ashland.

John Denzil McNutt

A celebration of life for all family and friends of John Denzil "JD" McNutt, 21, of Ashland, was held at 3 p.m. Monday at the John and Anna Brands Ranch at 97948 South Coos River Lane in Coos Bay. Private services will be held in Coos Bay for family members.

He was born Dec. 27, 1981, to Scott and Rebecca McNutt in Coos Bay. He died Aug. 26, 2003, in Ashland.

He attended public schools in Coos Bay and was a 2000 graduate of Marshfield High School. JD was a student at Southern Oregon University in Ashland.

JD loved music, flying the family's single-engine airplane, remote control airplanes, meteorology, water and snow skiing, cars, Rogue River rafting, "Techno gadgets," cookies and milk, being in the mountains and the Lord Jesus Christ. JD was a starting player on the 1999 Marshfield High School football team that was an Oregon semi-finalist. He also was a member of the Marshfield track and field team. JD was a student teacher at Marshfield and a volunteer football coach at Millicoma Junior High School.

JD is the beloved son of his parents, Scott and Rebecca McNutt of Coos Bay. He is survived by his brother, Scott McNutt Jr. and wife, Katie and niece Isabella Lynn McNutt, all of Tigard; grandparents, Richard and Mary Grumbling of Salem; numerous uncles and aunts, Steve McNutt of Bremerton, Wash., Kathe and Kevin Stufflebean of Coos Bay, Bill and Karma McNutt of Salem, Tom and Jane Trimmer of Richmond, Va., Russ and Bonnie Turman of Coos Bay, Mike and Judy Alsworth of Salem, John and Wendy Goins of Seattle and Joe Bourell; and lifelong friend and cousin, Jeremy Bourell.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lynn McNutt and Kathleen McNutt; and cousins, Sharon Shibles, Jennifer Turman and Grady Bourell.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Jennifer Turman Memorial, South Coast Running Fund at the Umpqua Bank, 170 S. Second St., Coos Bay, OR 97420.

Luciela M. Ellison

The graveside service for Luciela M. Ellison will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland. Mrs. Ellison, 80, of Phoenix, died Saturday, August 30, 2003, at home.

She was born March 22, 1923, at Thermopolis, Wyo., the daughter of Anna and M.D. Jennings. On Dec. 14, 1956, in Seattle, she married Delmer Ellison, who survives. They moved to Ashland in 1969 and have lived in the valley since that time.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Dray Ellison of South Carolina and Dennis Chafty of Tukwila, Wash; two daughters, Donna Roberts of Kent, Wash., and Diana Martin of Seattle; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Craig Meaden

Craig Meaden, 55, of Ashland, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003 at a Medford foster home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Nellie R. Rabjohn

The graveside service for Nellie R. Rabjohn will be 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at Scenic Hills Memorial Park in Ashland. Mrs. Rabjohn, 82, of Ashland, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at Ashland Community Hospital.

A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland.

Mrs. Rabjohn was born Feb. 20, 1921, in Amity, Ark., the daughter of Missouri and Eric Bryant. On Oct. 7, 1937, in Amity, she married Grady T. Rabjohn, who preceded her in death in 2000.

Mrs. Rabjohn lived in the Roseburg area for 10 years before moving to Talent in 1977. She moved to Williams in 1978 and to Ashland in 2001.

Surviving are three sons, Jesse L. Rabjohn of Ashland, Charley B. Rabjohn of Williams, and Thomas D. Rabjohn of Tollison, Ariz.; a daughter, Rebecca N. Harrison of Eugene; a brother, Floyd Bryant of Amity, Ark.; 11grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Arrangements are under the direction of Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Ashland.

Alfred "Al" South

Al South of Medford died Sept. 2, 2003, at the age of 62. A private service will be held at a later date. South was born Sept. 16, 1940, in Grygla, Minn., to Eugene & Nellie (Hasbrouck) South.

South grew up and attended schools in Ashland, graduating in 1958. He received bachelor's and master's degrees from Southern Oregon College, and was an instructor at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Ore., until 2001, when he retired and moved back to the Rogue Valley. South enjoyed traveling, reading, golfing, and following the stock market.

Before moving to Ontario, South married Shirley Boswell in August 1964. She survives. Other survivors include two sisters, Norma Veentjer of Portland and Patricia South of Ashland; five nieces, Cindy, Sharon, Patricia, Mary and Deborah; seven nephews, John, David, Michael, Patrick, Wayne, Steven and Douglas; an aunt, Netta Ekstrom; and numerous cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Wayne South; and nephews David South and Daniel Veentjer.

Craig Virgil Meaden

Craig Virgil Meaden of Ashland, died Sept. 3, 2003 at the Medford Hospice Center. He was 55.

Meaden was born in San Diego, Calif. and moved to Gainesville, Fla. in 1955. He lived in Florida for 32 years, during which time he served two tours on aircraft carriers in Tonkin Gulf during the Vietnam conflict.

He was a graduate of Gainesville High School and the University of South Florida, attaining a master's degree in Clinical Psychology.

Survivors include mother, Marian Meaden of Gainesville: Sisters Sharon Parr, Cindy Jordan, and Pam Rolfe, all of Gainesville; two nephews and one niece. He was preceded in death by father, LCDR Virgil Mathew Meaden.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Merl C. Howard

Merl C. Howard, 81, a long-time resident of Ashland passed away Thursday, July 31, 2003 in the home of his daughter, Pamela Nelson of Ashland.

He was born September 12, 1921 to Benjamin Franklin Howard and Olive Howard in Round Valley, Idaho.

Mr. Howard moved to Ashland for the first time in 1935, after his father's death. He attended junior high school in Ashland while living with his grandmother. He returned to Idaho soon thereafter. He worked as a ranch hand for the Civilian Conservation Corps and for Weyerhaeuser until he enlisted in the Army Air Force. He rose to the rank of Tech Sergeant with the 510th Fighter Squadron, 405th Group as a propeller specialist. During W.W. II he served in the U.S., England, Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was a part of one of the turning points in W.W.II, the D-Day invasion, as well as the events that followed, leading to the allied victory in Europe. He was honorably discharged in November 1945.

After W.W.II, he returned to Ashland, and worked for Weyerhaeuser Corp. He married Patricia M.L. McCoy in 1947, and they had two daughters. Though he and his wife divorced, they continued to be great friends and allies for the rest of their lives.

In the early 1950s, he opened A-1 Cabinet Shop, and eventually started building homes. He built many homes, commercial buildings and housing complexes in Ashland and the Southern Oregon area. He was the building contractor for the current Ashland Daily Tidings building. He built his last custom home in his 60s. He continued to build furniture and do small construction jobs until 2 years ago.

He was an avid outdoorsman. He was a prolific reader with particular interests in World history, Northwest history, the classics and the natural sciences.

His ex-wife preceded Mr. Howard in death. His companion of many years Gail Schmaltz also preceded him in death. Mr. Howard is survived by his good friend and companion of recent years, Lois Severson.

Family members that survive him are two daughters, Denise Howard Moon of Vancouver, Wash., and Pamela Nelson of Ashland; two sisters, Jane Roberts of Auburn, Calif., and Aloha Hays; and one grandchild. Mr. Howard is also survived by his 20-year old cat, "Mr. Cat."

At the time of his death Mr. Howard was in the home he built for his daughter and her husband, surrounded by furniture he built for them.

Those who wish may pay their respects from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2003 at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

A gathering of family and friends will be held to celebrate his life, Saturday, September 13, 2003, 4 p.m., at the home of his daughter, Pamela Nelson. Please call 541-488-3178.
