Ray Holliday
1921-2004
Ray Holliday, of Yuma, Ariz., died March 25 from age-related causes at the age of 82.
He was born Oct. 18, 1921, in Scobey, Mont., to Guy and Esther Holliday.
He moved to the Walker area with his family in 1933. He also lived in Reedsport, Coos Bay and Oregon City before moving to Yuma, Ariz., in November 2003.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1940-45 and received five decorations, including silver and bronze oakleaf clusters.
He worked as a millwright in his early years, dairy farmer and owned and operated a motel and A&W Restaurant.
He was a member of the VFW, Elks, Eagles and Moose clubs.
He showed unconditional love and support to his family.
Survivors include his wife; son and daughter-in-law: Mark and Dana Holliday of Oregon City; daughter and son-in-law: Cheryl and Jerry Winters of Houston, Texas; grandchildren: Alisa, Jeff, Jessica, Rex, Ronnie and Julie: and seven great-great-grandchildren.
A service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Smith-Lund-Mills. A private inurnment will be at Walker Cemetery near Cottage Grove.

Harold Slack
1910-2004
Harold Slack of Cottage Grove died March 25 at the age of 94 from age-related causes.
He was born Jan. 16, 1910, in Pawnee City, Neb., to George and Nellie Slack.
He graduated from the University of Nebraska.
He married Thelma Brown on Feb. 28, 1935, in Marysville, Kan.
He lived in Hayward, Calif., for 43 years before moving to Cottage Grove in May 1995.
He was employed as a salesman for Fruehauf Trailers for 33 years.
He enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Shriners, Scottish Rite and American Fuchsia Society.
Survivors include his daughter: Carole Chapman of Cottage Grove; son: George Slack of Ukiah, Calif.; grandsons: Harold and Robert Slack of California, James Chapman of Cottage Grove; granddaughter: Joan Goossens of Cottage Grove; and five great-grandchildren.
A service was scheduled today in Hayward, Calif.
Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.
David Sloan
1955-2004
David Allen Sloan, of Grants Pass, has died on March 11 at the age of 48.
He was born to Robert M. and Betty M. Sloan on Dec. 11, 1955, in Garden Grove, Calif. In 1973 he moved to Grants Pass with his family and lived there off and on for 15 years before returning in 2000.
He married Cathy Bounds in 1978; they later divorced.
He also lived in Las Vegas, Nev., Huntington Beach, Calif., and Battle Ground, Wash. He was a journeyman drywall contractor in California.
He was a member of the Painters and Drywallers union. He enjoyed fishing and target shooting.
He is survived by two daughters: Jennifer D. Sloan of Kelso, Wash., and Aimie M. Sloan of Cottage Grove; three brothers: Timothy Sloan of Kingman, Ariz., Robert Sloan Jr. of Grants Pass and Steven Sloan of Sweet Home; and four grandchildren.
A private service will be held. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors of Grants Pass are in charge of arrangements.
LeRoy Ewing
1928-2004
LeRoy Ewing, of St. Helens and formerly of Cottage Grove, died at the age of 76 April 29 of cancer.
Ewing was born Feb. 10, 1928, in Cottage Grove to Roy and Marie Ewing.
He married Ruth Poole in Eugene in 1948. She died in 1982.
He graduated from Cottage Grove High School in 1946 and lived here until the mid-1950s.
He served in the U.S. Navy for two years.
He worked as a truck driver in the logging and concrete industries in Oregon and California.
His interests included sports and he enjoyed his grandchildren.
Survivors include a son: Dennis of St. Helens; two brothers: Fay of Eugene and Don of Tehachapi, Calif; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service was held May 7 at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Columbia Funeral Home in St. Helens is in charge of arrangements.
