Adrien Barats

Adrien Barats, 75, of Ashland, died Sunday, June 22, 2003, at his home.

A funeral Mass will be held for Mr. Barats at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2003 and Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church. Father Joseph Betschart will officiate.

Mr. Barats was born March 6, 1928, in Redwood City, Calif. to John Louis and Marie Jean (Cauhape) Barats.

He married Barbara Jean Perry-Barats, who survives, on June 20, 1953 in Redwood City.

An Ashland resident since 1959, Mr. Barats was a rancher and an electrical contractor. He enjoyed history, geology, hunting, and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Barats of Ashland; three daughters, Melinda Tippets of Eugene, Ore., Holly Esqueda of Portland, Ore., and Tracy Barats of Ashland; three sons, Kurt Barats, of Eagle, Idaho, Greg Barats of Dallas, Texas, and Mitch Barats of Lake Oswego, Ore.; and 12 grandchildren.

His parents, John Louis and Marie Jean (Cauhape) Barats, preceded him in death.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, Ore. 97504, and the Ashland Community Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 98, Ashland, Ore., 97520.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller - Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Helen Teresa Olson

Helen Teresa Olson, 89, of Talent died Tuesday, June 24, 2003 at Rogue Valley Medical Center, Medford. Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller - Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

The funeral for Helen Teresa Olson will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 27, 2003 at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland. The Rev. Alice Knotts of Talent Methodist Church will officiate. The graveside service will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Ashland.

Mrs. Olson, 89, of Talent, died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at Rogue Valley Medical Center, Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cheney Family Place, 2882 State St., Medford, Ore. 97504.

She was born June 16, 1914, in Roseville, Calif., to Joseph Kantor and Anna Victoria Fekete. She moved to the Rogue Valley as a child, and graduated from Medford High School in 1932. On Nov. 11, 1936, at her parent's home on Fern Valley Road, she married Ivan E. Olson, who died in 2000.

Mrs. Olson was a homemaker and a member of Talent Methodist Church.

She enjoyed sewing, gardening, quilting and Mariners baseball.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary K. Dugan, St. Helens, Teresa J. Hirte, Tualatin, and Trientje Mullins, Los Molinos, Calif.; a son, Michael A., Talent; three brothers, John Kantor, Phoenix, Elmer Kantor, Talent, and Henry Kantor, Medford; 11 grandchildren; and six great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Gaylord Sherman Vestal Jr.

The memorial service for Gaylord Sherman Vestal Jr. will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 27, 2003, at the First United Methodist Church in Ashland. The Rev. Michael Powell will officiate. A reception will follow in the Fireside Room at the church.

Mr. Vestal, 81, of Ashland, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 175 N. Main St., Ashland, Ore. 97520.

He was born Jan. 15, 1922, in Ashland, to Gaylord Sherman Vestal Sr. and Della Yaryan Vestal. He graduated from Ashland High School in 1939 and from Southern Oregon Normal School, now Southern Oregon University, in 1942. In 1949, he received a master's degree from the University of Oregon.

Mr. Vestal taught junior high school in Ashland, Condon, Portland, and Haigler, Neb.

He was drafted into the Army Air Corps in 1942, and served in the South Pacific, India and China.

Mr. Vestal was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served as treasurer.

Survivors include a sister, Margaret Taylor, Ashland; and a brother, Robert V., Ashland.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Joe W. Jackson

A memorial service has been held for Joe W. Jackson, 59, formerly of Ashland, who died Thursday, June 12, 2003, in his home in Sandpoint, Idaho.

Mr. Jackson was born Aug. 31, 1943, the son of Joseph and Kay Jackson. He grew up in Denver, Colo. and attended Texas Tech. University, where he met his wife, Helen Emmons. They were married Dec. 27, 1965.

The couple lived in Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, British Columbia, Oregon, and Sandpoint.

At the time of his death, Mr. Jackson was a teacher at Rocky Mountain Academy, Sandpoint.

A musician, Mr. Jackson was known for his lyrical abilities that emphasized the positive.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Jackson; his daughters, Dawn and Amanda; his mother, Kay Jackson; and two sisters, Kara Baumgart and Pat Combes.

Richard Edson Abbott

Richard Edson Abbott, 80, of Ashland and Palo Alto, Calif. died Monday, June 2, 2003, at his home in Palo Alto. A memorial service for Mr. Abbott was held Thursday, June 12, 3003, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Menlo Park, Calif.

Mr. Abbott was born Oct. 31, 1922 in San Jose, Calif. to Ernest and Audrey Abbott. He served as a first lieutenant on a Navy destroyer in the South Pacific during W.W.II, and upon war's end, finished a degree in electrical engineering at the University of California at Berkeley. During a brief shore leave in Palo Alto on June 13, 1945, he married Jeanne Hinchman, who survives,

Mr. Abbott established two electronic firms in Palo Alto as the technology industry took root in the Silicon Valley. He was a founding member of the Foothills Tennis and Swimming Club and volunteered as a reading tutor for children at the non-profit YES Reading Center in Menlo Park.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Abbott of Palo Alto; three daughters, Carol Harris of San Francisco, Chris Stokes of Ashland, and Priscilla Abbott of Sacramento, Calif.; his son, Richard Abbott, Jr. of Palo Alto; and 10 grandchildren.

Mary Amelia Fretz

Mary Amelia Fretz, 89, of Ashland, died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at the Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland.

Family and friends will gather in memory of Mrs. Fretz at the home of her daughter, Judy Kellogg, at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 28, 2003.

Mrs. Fretz was born Feb. 12, 1914, in Phoenix, Ariz. to John and Margaret (McCoy) Knight.

In 1937 she married Walter Fretz in Los Angeles.

Mrs. Fretz moved to Ashland nine years ago from Northridge, Calif.

She was self-employed as a property manager. She was a member of the Eastern Star.

She enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing, and travel.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Larry Kellogg, of Ashland; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Fretz; one brother; and one sister.
