Juan Schwendener

The graveside service for Juan Schwendener will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland, with Pastor Don Baldrica of the First Baptist Church of Ashland officiating.

Mr. Schwendener, 93, of Ashland died Saturday, July 26, 2003, at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Bible Radio, P.O. 7100, Pasadena, Calif. 91109 or to Asante Hospice, c/o Rogue Valley Foundation, 2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford, Ore. 97504.

Born June 3, 1910, in Guatemala City, Guatemala, he attended schools in Switzerland, where he completed his grammar and secondary education.

He attended business college in Geneva, Switzerland and the Royal Agriculture College in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England.

Mr. Schwendener was chief of forests with the Guatemalan Minister of Agriculture where he worked with native agriculture graduates teaching forestry with his focus on water conservation.

To patrol forest land, he learned to fly, which became a lifelong interest.

Mr. Schwendener came to the U.S. in 1947 and attended the School of Forestry at Oregon State College, later purchasing a 100-acre tree farm and one-man sawmill in Camas Valley.

He married the former Mildred Hickman, who survives, on July 14, 1951, in Glide.

In the fall of 1956, he enrolled in the teaching program at what was then Southern Oregon State College in Ashland, receiving his degree in 1960.

He taught French and Spanish at Ashland Junior High School before his retirement in 1974.

Following retirement, the Schwendeners served four months with the Andes Evangelican Mission, teaching children in Bolivia.

They enjoyed RV traveling for many years, spending winters in California, Arizona and Nevada.

Survivors include three sons, John C. of Medford, Richard of Ashland, and Alan E. of Long Beach, Calif.; one brother, Eugene of Guatemala; one sister, Edith Gibson of Guatemala; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Alice Elizabeth Briery

A funeral service for Alice Elizabeth Briery will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4, 2003 at the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland. A visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003 and 9 a.m. to noon Monday at the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home. Interment will follow at the Hill Dunn Cemetery, Ashland.

Mrs. Briery, 84, of Pacifica, Calif., formerly of Ashland, died Monday, July 21, 2003 at her home. She was born March 8, 1919 at Pueblo, Colo., the daughter of Margaret and Jesse Grever.

On Sept. 18, 1935 at Eads, Colo. she married John Henry Briery II who preceded her in death in 1977. In 1962 she moved from Santa Cruz, Calif. to Ashland. She worked at Rogue Valley Packing for years and for several years worked as a beautician in Talent. In October of 1987 she moved to Pacifica.

Mrs. Briery was an avid square dancer and a member of the Christian Church of Ashland. She was lovingly known as "Aunt Toots" by her many nieces and nephews.

Survivors include one son, John Henry Briery III of Pacifica; one daughter, Sandra Wells of Ashland; five brothers, Charlie Grever of Santa Cruz, Zane Grever of Lodi, Calif., John Grever of Middleton, Idaho, Douglas Grever of Caldwell, Idaho, and Bruce Grever of Middleton; three sisters, Luda Latham of Middleton, Peggy Breuner of Caldwell, and Barbara Bale of Caldwell; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Verla E. (Lutz) Dunbar

Verla E. (Lutz) Dunbar, 96, of Ashland, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at Ashland Community Hospital, Ashland. Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller - Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Carl Henry Fehige

Carl Henry Fehige, 87, formerly of Ashland, died April 11, 2003 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. No memorial services are planned.

Mr. Fehige was born July 4, 1915. His early childhood was spent on a ranch which was located on Upper Emigrant Creek Road. He graduated from Ashland High School in 1934 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He worked for the Ashland Grange Co-Op from July 1946 until retiring as manager in 1969.

Mr. Fehige loved animals, and he enjoyed farming, ranching and traveling.The last 19 years of his life were spent in Florida and Alberta.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; a step-daughter, Connie, of Orem, Utah; his sister Edna of Sacramento, Calif.; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

William C. Waugh

William Charles Waugh, 73, of Talent, died Monday, June 2, 2003 at the Rogue Valley Medical Center. Arrangements are under the direction of Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Verla (Lutz) Dunbar

Family memorial services will be held at a later date in Nevada City, Calif. for Verla Elizabeth (Lutz) Dunbar, 96, of Ashland, who died Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at Ashland Community Hospital.

Mrs. Dunbar was born Nov. 29, 1906 in Indian Flat, Calif. to Charles and Fannie Eden.

Following graduation from Nevada City High School, she was employed as a bookkeeper for Standard Oil Company in Bakersfield, Calif. In 1925, in Bakersfield, Calif. she married Louis Otto Lutz of Nevada City, Calif.

The couple moved to Grants Pass, Ore. in 1927. In 1938, the family moved to the Siskiyou Mountains south of Ashland.

During World War II, Mrs. Dunbar worked for the U.S. Department of Commerce Weather Bureau's Siskiyou Summit observation station. Between 1948 and 1951 she was clerk of the Ashland School Board. The couple moved to Klamath Falls, Ore. where she was bookkeeper, then clerk, for Klamath Union High School. She returned to Ashland in 1956 after the death of her husband and became a bookkeeper for Trowbridge and Flynn, Medford.

In 1960 she married Watson Dunbar, a long-time family friend and moved to Vancouver, then Langley, British Columbia. She returned to Ashland after Mr. Dunbar's death in 1989.

Mrs. Dunbar was Past Matron of Alpha Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Ashland.

Survivors include two sisters, Lois Davies and Elma Baker, both of Nevada City, Calif.; two daughters, Virginia Wishard of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Marjorie O'Harra of Ashland; three grandsons, two granddaughters; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Mrs. Dunbar was preceded in death by three brothers, a sister, and a grandson.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller - Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.
