Wendell D. Ames
Wendell D. Ames, 99, of Ashland, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003 at home.
He is survived by sons, John W. Ames (Janet Boggia) of Ashland and David B. Ames (Candace) of Hilo, Hawaii; grandchildren, Erica Nichols, Alice Lyle, John D. Ames, Alisa Ames, Marisa Ames; and three great grandchildren, Jack Ames, Sam Nichols, Oonagh Nichols. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Alice Slama Ames of Paxton, Nebraska.
Mr. Ames was born in Lincoln, Neb. on June 24, 1903 to Isaac D. Ames and Nelle Gooch Ames and moved to California in 1938. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1927 and received his master's degree from Columbia University in 1933.
He taught in a one-room log school in Idaho in the 1920's, Lincoln (Nebraska) High School in the early 1930's and Tamalpais and Redwood High Schools in Marin County, Calif. from 1954 to 1968.
With his wife, he owned and operated Ames Book Shop in San Francisco's Financial District from 1939 to 1958, he was a civilian employee of the U.S. Navy on the San Francisco Embarcadero, and he volunteered as an aircraft spotter during World War II.
He served on the Mill Valley (Calif.) School Board in the 1950's and was a member of the Marin County School District Reorganization Committee. He was also a tutor for Native American children, CDF fire watch volunteer and an election volunteer in El Dorado County, Calif.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.
Interment will be at the family plot in Lincoln, Neb.
Dorothy Jean Nugent Harper
Dorothy Jean Nugent Harper, 75, of Ashland, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland. A funeral mass is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003 at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church. Father Joseph Betschart will officiate.
She was born May 19, 1927 in Sioux Falls, S.D. to Louis Thomas and Cecelia Katherine Lyman. She moved to Ashland from Summerland, Calif. in 1978.
She attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn.
She was a painter and poet extraordinaire!
Survivors include sons, Thomas Campbell of Arroyo Grande, Calif., William Campbell of New Castle, Okla. and Peter Harper of Oak View, Calif.; daughters, Kathryn Campbell of Ashland, Rebecca Sanders of Ashland and Cecelia Harper of Davis, Calif.; sisters, Ann Wilson of Santa Fe, N.M., Ruth McCoy of Canyon Country, Calif. and Susan Feldmann of Arroyo Grande, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by stepfather, Wallace "Dinty" Moore; mother Cecelia Katherine Moore; and father, Louis Thomas Nugent.

Jessica Mary Croy
Jessica Mary Croy (Jess), age 31, of Medford, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003 at Providence Hospital of natural causes. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003 at Litwiller-Simonsen. Everett LeBaugh of Newlife Church of God will officiate. A graveside service will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Visitation is availble from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Litwiller-Simonsen.
She was born Feb. 10, 1971 in San Diego, Calif to Joseph and Denise Davis. She lived in Medford for the past t10 years. On July 22, 2002 in Medford, she married Ronald G. Croy.
She went to high school in Myrtle Point. She was a bartender in Medford.
Survivors include her husband, Ronald; daughter, Jasmine Zimmerman of Medford; sons, Zachary and Brandon Zimmerman of Medford; sisters, Catherine Looper of Medford, Bernadette Kirkpatrick of Myrtle Point and Veronica Warner of Houston, Texas; brother, Michael Davis of Myrtle, Ore.; parents, Denise Davis of Broadbent, Ore. and Joseph Davis of Shelbyville, Tenn.

Melvin O. Shilts
Melvin O. Shilts, 67, of Medford, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003 in Medford. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at First Christian Church, 1900 Crater Lake Ave. in Medford. Chaplain John Braun of Rogue Valley Hospice will officiate. Memorial contributions can be made to Rogue Valley Hospice, 2960 Doctor's Park Dr., Medford, Ore 97504.
Melvin Shilts was born Feb. 1, 1935 in Stanley, Wisc. On Oct. 6, 1961 in Ashland, he married Rose Jean Sweet. He grew up in Wisconsin until moving to Klamath Falls when he was 17; he later moved to the Rogue Valley following his military service.
Mr. Shilts entered the U.S. Army after high school and served until being honorably discharged in 1957 at the rank of PFC. He worked in logging and timber after that. He later worked for the Jackson County Roads Department and for Bear Creek Corporation. He also helped install the roof on Rogue Valley Manor and was involved in the construction of the North Umpqua Section of the Pacific Crest Trail. Melvin enjoyed hunting, fishing, mining, camping and most any other outdoor activity.
Survivors include son, Steve Shilts of Roseburg, Ore.; daughter, Sonia Lemacks of Central Point, Ore.; brother, Harold Dailey of Salem, Ore.; sisters, Sharon Bradfield of Medford and Alice Sweet of Phoenix; and one grandchild. Preceded in death were his wife, Rose "Jeanie" Shilts in 1988 and sister, Charlotte Dailey.

Evalyn Sparr Graf
Evalyn Sparr Graf, 85, of Ashland, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003 at Northridge Center. No services will be held.
Evalyn Graf was born July 16, 1917 in Painesville, Ohio, to Thomas and Pearl Sparr. In 1942, Burton Ohio, she married J. Lucas Graf. She lived in the Rogue Valley for the last eight years from Manhattan, Kansas.
Prior to moving from Kansas, Mrs. Graf resided in Rocky River, Ohio. Mrs. Graf had been an Assistant Vice President with Society Corp. which is now Key Corporation in Cleveland, Ohio.
She was a past member of the Ashland Newcomers and a local bridge club. She enjoyed bridge, boating and spending time with her family.
Survivors include a son, Joseph I. Graf of Ashland; and one grandson. Preceded in death were her husband, J. Lucas Graf in 1965; brother, Arthur Sparr; and parents.

Marie Snyder
The funeral service for Marie Snyder will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2003 at the Havurah Shir Haddash Temple, 185 N. Mountain Avenue, Ashland. Rabbi David Zaslow will officiate.
Marie Snyder, 58, of Gold Hill died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003 at her home.

Robert Kimball
Robert Kimball, 78, of Talent died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003 in Medford.
He was born Feb. 28, 1924 in Pasadena, Calif. to Howard and Mary Kimball. He attended four years of college and served in the U.S. Army in World War II from 1943-45.
Mr. Kimball was an engineer for the City of Grants Pass' Water Sanitation Department (previously for the cities of Palmdale, Calif., San Diego, Calif., and for Princeville Corp. in Hawaii).
He is survived by his ex-wife, Rosemary Kimball of Phoenix; son David Kimball and wife Anna of Snyder, N.Y.; daughters Diann Ferguson and husband Tim of Ashland, and Sharon Dolan and husband Joe of San Diego; and four grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary, Medford.
