Julia Grace Garrett
September 16, 1943 - October 5, 2006
Julia Garrett, 63, of Sweet Home died Thursday, October 5. She was born to George and Grace (Simpson) Garrett in Alamosa, Colorado.
Julia was born and raised in Alamosa and graduated from Sangre de Cristo High School in Mosca, Colorado in 1961. She went to nursing school in Alamosa and graduated in 1993, working in a VA Hospital in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, and finally at a nursing home in Sweet Home. Julia lived in Oregon off and on for the past 20 years. She loved arrowhead hunting, reading, and sewing.
Julia is survived by brothers, Gene Garrett and wife Jackie, of Monte Vista, Colorado, Billey Dale Garrett and wife Linda of Mosch, Colorado; five nieces and nephews; 10 great nieces and nephews and 1 great, great niece. Julia was preceded in death by father George and mother Grace, both in 1987.
Cremation has been chosen, and Julia’s ashes will be spread in Alamosa. No services are planned at this time. Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
Donald Mathews
November 8, 1925 to September 30, 2006
Donald Mathews, 80, of Sweet Home died Sunday, September 30. He was born to Charles and Serena (Stewart) Mathews in Statesbury, Missouri.
Donald moved from Missouri to Clatskanie, Oregon in his youth and graduated from Clatskanie High School. After graduating, he serviced in the Navy in WWII. He retired from Weyerhauser in 1987 and moved to Sweet Home in 1997. He loved to bowl, fish, and hunt.
Donald is survived by his wife, Eleanor of Sweet Home; son, Gene Mathews of Avador; sisters, Louise Hill of Eugene, Betty Gustafson of Portland, Julie Volkinburgh of Vancouver, WA, June Verley of Tillamook, and Jean Maddix of Moses Lake, WA.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Mathews, and his first wife, Venla (Penny) Mattila Mathews.
A memorial service will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., October 14, at the Sweet Home Veteran's Hall. Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
Jack Wittwer
March 15, 1919 - September 28, 2006
Jack Wittwer, 87, of Lebanon passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 28 of natural causes. He was born to John Hyrum and Anna Vilate (Syphus) Wittwer on March 15, 1919 in Vernal, Utah. At two years of age, he moved with his parents to St. Thomas, Nevada (now under the North end of Lake Mead) where his mother died shortly after he turned three. Thereafter he lived with many different families and attended school in numerous Southern Nevada communities including St. Thomas, Bunkerville, Mesquite, Overton, and Las Vegas, where he graduated from high school.
After a courtship of 6 1/2 years, he married his high school girlfriend, Lenore Robison, on May 5, 1941 at her parents' home in Overton, later sealed in the Ogden Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Immediately following graduation from the University of Nevada Reno in 1942, Jack went into the US Army where he served four years, participating in the WWII amphibious invasions of Saipan, Tinian, Leyte, and Okinawa, a Captain at wars end. Jack's life work was with the Federal Land Bank of Berkeley in California (now AgriBank) making long-term first mortgage loans to farmers and ranchers in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah. He was Senior Vice-President when he retired.
Each year after the war, Jack and Lenore grew, harvested, and shared vegetables and fruits in their back yard. He received his Master Gardener's certificate from Utah State University. Jack and Lenore were very knowledgeable of and followed all major sporting events and were avid outdoor people... fishing, camping, RVing, wildlife watching, etc. He was a member of the High Priest Quorum of Oak Forest First Ward in Layton, Utah before moving to Sweet Home, Oregon.
Jack is survived by daughter, Celia and husband Gary Vernier of Layton, Utah; son, John Richard and wife Mirja of Sweet Home, Oregon; brother, Glade and wife Phyllis of Alexandria, Virginia; 7 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by wife of 62 years, Lenore; his parents; step-mother, Della Outzen Wittwer and his sisters, Fern Goodman and Fae Stewart.
A graveside service will be held at 4:30 pm on October 7, 2006 at Logandale Nevada Cemetery, with viewing at 3:00 pm at Moapa Valley Mortuary, 5090 N. Moapa Valley Blvd. Logandale, Nevada.

Jerry Lee Cockrell
April 18, 1951 to September 27, 2006
Jerry Lee Cockrell, 55, of Sweet Home died Wednesday. He was born to Wilbur and Irma (Loche) Cockrell in Moorehead, Minnesota.
Jerry lived in Sweet Homefor 21 years with family and friends. He helped in various situations when called upon. He was said to be a person who knew a little something about everything. He could fix houses, cars, yards, ... No job was too difficult for him. He did everything with a smile and a "It can be done" attitude.
Jerry loved being with his dog, Patches. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and attending family reunions. You could always depend on him to be a partner for the family horseshoe tournament or a quick game of pool. He loved everyone in his family with his whole heart.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Cockrell of Sweet Home; daughter, Jaime Rooney of Sweet Home; sons, Brien and Jerry Jr.; five brothers, Dave, Larry, Kenny, Bud, and Everett; two sisters, Carol and Arlis; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 4, at the River of Life Fellowship. Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
Hazel E. Munts
February 21, 1916 to September 23, 2006
Hazel Munts, 90, of Sweet Home died Saturday. She was born in Sweet Home to Arthur and Mary (Mattke) Ehlert.
She graduated from Sweet Home High School in 1934 and worked as a nurse at the Sweet Home Langmack Hospital until marrying Arley Rowe Munts on Nov. 14, 1937. During WWII, she was an Air Craft Spotter stationed at the Calapooia observation tower. Civic involvement included local voting precinct work for 40 years that included about 30 years as precinct chairperson. Hazel had a wide range of interests both indoor and outdoor, including rock hunting, prospecting, genealogy, local history, needle work, hunting, traveling, spending winters in Arizona, amateur radio (call sign WA7QZV), and antique roses.
She is survived by sons, Steven Munts of Spokane, WA and Kenneth Munts of Sweet Home, and grandchildren, Brien and Eric Munts of Sweet Home and Lisa Howell of Spokane, WA. Hazel was preceded in death by husband Arley Rowe Munts in 1998 and infant sister Inez Helen Ehlert in 1923.
A viewing will be 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, September 29, at Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel. Graveside service will be at Gilliland Cemetery Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

Timothy "Tim" Lee Bagley
May 9, 1937 to September 15, 2006
Timothy "Tim" Lee Bagley, 69, of Sweet Home died on Friday, September 15th at his home.
Tim was born on Mothers Day, May 9, 1937 in Astoria to Vernon and Laurinda Bagley. He entered Heaven on September 15, 2006 joining his Mother who preceded him in death.
He attended Knappa grade and high school, graduating in 1957. He attended OSU for two years. Tim worked in the forestry industry all of his life. He worked with his father in the Astoria area at Bagley and Sons Logging Co. until 1966. He then took a position as Contract Supervisor with Publisher’s Paper Co. in Eagle Creek until 1971. His next employer was Caffall Bros. Forest Products as Logging Manager of their operations in Estacada.
He married Betty Daniels in Sweet Home on August 10, 1957. In 1978 Tim and Betty started their own logging and road construction company called Bagley Enterprises, Inc. In 1982 he partnered with Cal Emmert and Rod Wolfer in WEBCO Road Construction in Sweet Home until 1989. He continued with the WEBCO name and he and his daughter, Sharon, worked together until December 2005 when he retired.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Betty Bagley; son, Gary Bagley of Estacada; grandchildren, Tim and Randa Nistler of Monrovia, CA and Tracy and Tom Spencer and their daughter Taylor of Milwaukie; daughters, Brenda Melum of Wilsonville, Luanne and Sharon Bagley of Sweet Home; father and step-mother, Vernon and Beth Bagley of Newberg; brother, Dan and wife Carolyn Bagley of Estacada and their children Michael Bagley and fiancee Shannon Kelly; Sonja and Ryan McCart and their daughters Kayla and Sydnie and son Jesse; cousin Carla and Dale Walker of Sagle, ID; their sons and families; ‘adopted’ grandchildren, Tim and Sam Speights, Promise Speights-Bennett, Katie and Cherish Ventura, Samson Clay; and many other close relatives.

Paul William Bates
May 6, 1920 to September 1, 2006
Paul William Bates, 86, of Sweet Home died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, September 1st, while at a care home in Springfield. Paul was born in Noxen, PA to William R. and Ethel M. (Mock) Bates.
At age 19 he served one year in the Civilian Conservation Corps (1940). In March of 1941, he enlisted in the US Army. He was stationed at Schofield Barracks on the island of Oahu, Hawaii during the enemy attack on Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941. He also fought at Guadalcanal January 10-26, 1943. He was 27th infantry, an expert Rifleman and Scout. He received the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon, American Defense Ribbon, and Bronze Campaign Star.
He grew up in the northern parts of Pennsylvania, and at age 25 he married Elmira E. Lengel while he resided in New York. In 1953, he and his family of three children and his wife traveled to California. After four more trips by car across the U.S. he and his family settled in Sweet Home in 1960 and called it "home."
He spent much of his youth as a hunter and trapper. He was running a dairy farm when left New York as a family man. Here in Oregon, he worked as a logger, millwright, and welder. He was a great shade tree mechanic. He loved his time with Mother Nature. His Mohawk background was evident in his respect for nature, where he learned to live off the land. He loved to spend his spare time hunting bear, cougar, and raccoon with his many hounds and hunting partners. He hunted deer and elk also. He planted many gardens for yearly canning.
He is survived by his ex-wife and best friend, Elmira E. Bates of Sweet Home; daughters, Sandra J. and Jack Smith of Sweet Home, Mary A. and Mark Galloway of Sweet Home; son, William P. and Sandra "Babe" Bates of Sweet Home; twelve grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild. He is preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and one grandchild: Colette Ann Valentine in 1966.

Steven Randall Fentress
August 27, 1960 - August 31, 2006
Steven Randall Fentress, 46, of Sweet Home died Thursday. He was born to Thomas and Cosette (Wyneger) Frentress in Roseburg.
He lived in Myrtle Creek, Oregon for four years, passing through Reedsport and starting school in Eugene. He later moved to Sweet Home and graduated from Sweet Home High School. After graduation, Steven entered the US Navy and traveled the world as West Admiral Chef for eight years. When he left the Navy, he moved to California and worked with Home Depot for eleven years. While in California, Steven met Shelley Johnson. Together, they moved to Sweet Home to be closer to his parents.
Steven is survived by life partner, Shelley Johnson; parents, Thomas and Cosette Frentress; brother, Jay Frentress of Eugene; sisters, Jan Banks of Newton, Kansas and Cindy Person of Lebanon, Oregon; nephews, Jessy Person, Chris and Jeff Banks; and niece, Erica Banks.
