Letha Paden
September 10, 1913 - March 19, 2008

Letha Mae Paden, age 94, of Sweet Home passed away Wednesday. She was born in Bowlegs, Oklahoma to Thomas Everett and Ida Ellen (Caulkins) Caldwell.

She lived in Oklahoma till she moved to Sanger, California in 1944. In 1973 she moved to Marcola, Oregon and lived there until she moved to Sweet Home in 1999. She had homes in Sanger, Tollhouse and Morro Bay, California.

Letha owned and operated restaurants in California before moving to Oregon. She retired from JCPenny in Eugene, Oregon. She was active in the Republican Party. Letha received an award from Lane County, Oregon farmers market.

She loved all kinds of needlework, especially crochet, cake decorating, gardening/farming and selling at craft shows. She also sold baked goods, james and jellies, fruit and vegetables at Lane County Farmers Market. She loved to travel; anyplace in a car but an airplane would do.

Letha is survived by two daughters: Barbara June Jostrom of Marcola and Glenda Sue Doughman of Yreka, California; five grandchildren: William “Skip” Doughman of Eugene, Mark G. Doughman of Chico, California, Kirsten Seaberry of Vacaville, California, Kari Cooper of Charlotte, NC, and Barbara Gates of Danville, California; eleven great grandchildren: Vernon and Misty Doughman; Kiersten, Mark A., Courtney, Kari Doughman; Karissa, Rebecca and Jessica Seaberry; Adam, Joel Gates; four great great grandchildren: Conli, Jasmine, Daelen and Dyani Doughman; and one brother, David Bennett of Sweet Home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas E. Caldwell (1941) Ida Ellen Caulkins Bennett (1972); brothers: Homer, Charles, Clifford and Paul Bennett; Everett, Velmore, and Herman Caldwell; sisters: Nita Joyner and Thelbe Elder; husbands: Glenn R. Bennett (1973) and W.L. “Larry” Paden (1991).

Memorial contributions can be made to Samaritan Evergreen Hospice and Wiley Creek Community Activity Fund.

A viewing will be 4:00-7:00 p.m., Monday, March 24, at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 25, also at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel. Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday at Mable Cemetery in Marcola.

Juanita F. Davis
June 10, 1930 - March 23, 2008

Juanita Frances Davis, age 77, of Lebanon passed away on Easter morning at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born in Yamhill, Oregon to Peter Paul and Lona Mae (Hewitt) Weidman.

As a child, Juanita’s family moved to Vernonia, Oregon, where she lived until 1957 and would meet her future husband. Juanita married James Quentin Davis on September 4, 1948 in Vernonia. Jim and Juanita had four children. The family moved from Vernonia to Sweet Home before ultimately settling in Lebanon in 1963.

Juanita loved sewing, gardening, crafts, her friends, and her family. As an adult, Juanita joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where she served for many years as a nursery leader.

Juanita is survived by her husband, James; her children, Daniel Paul Davis and his wife, Karen, James Alton Davis and his wife, Mary Alice, Pamela Mae Lacy and her husband, Jack, and Donald Allen Davis and his wife, Rebecca; three brothers, Loren Weidman, Paul Weidman, and Robert Weidman; twenty nine grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Juanita was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Vona Harvey.

A viewing will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Lebanon, in the Relief Society room. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m., in the chapel.

Sweet Home Funeral Chapel handled arrangements.

Deloris "Dee" Moore
May 2, 1931 - April 1, 2008

Deloris “Dee” Moore, age 76, of Sweet Home passed away Tuesday. She was born in Perris, California to Julius and Daisy (Greene) Curtis.

Deloris married Wendell “Wink” Moore on April 23rd in Arcata, California. They resided in Sweet Home ever since.

Deloris was an active member of the Mardras LDS Church and the Sweet Home Gleaners. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren and make doll clothes with her granddaughters. She crocheted many, many blankets and afghans. Deloris never drove past a yard sale. She loved to camp, fish, or just spend time in the mountains.

She is survived by daughters Roxy Bentley of Medford and Donita McKinnon of Sweet Home; sons Mike, Tim, Joe, and Pat of Sweet Home and Bob of Madras; sisters Dot (her twin sister) and Micky, both of Lebanon; brothers Morris of Eagle Point and Ben of Blue Lake; 12 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Deloris was preceded in death by her husband, Wink; sisters Ethel and Julie; and her granddaughter, Laurie.

A viewing will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday, April 3, at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel, and again at 10:00 a.m., Friday morning at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Sweet Home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 4, also at the church. Interment will be at Gilliland Cemetery beside her husband, Wink. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.

Edith Pearl Sorgen
December 26, 1918 - April 2, 2008

Edith Pearl Sorgen, age 89, of Sweet Home passed away Wednesday. She was born in Lawton, Kansas to George and Mary Elizabeth (Marker) Spencer.

She lived in Sweet Home in 1947, and then moved to Eugene in 1951. She moved from Eugene to Bend in 1968 and remained there until moving back to Sweet Home in 1986.

Edith worked for a time as head cook at St. Charles Hospital in Bend, and as a cook at a University of Oregon fraternity house. In the 1970s, she was a crew boss for a construction project that her husband also worked on. She single-handedly built two pre-fabricated homes in a shop her husband customized for her.

She loved to hunt, fish, and cook for her family on those outings. She volunteered at the senior center as a cook for many years. When she wasn’t sewing or cooking she was winning at cards.

Edith started hand stitching quilts in 1984. By 1998, she had completed 120 full-sized quilts—all handmade. She made 161 quilts in her lifetime. She displayed and sold these quilts at the Sisters Outdoor Quilt show. She was the featured quilter for two years. Some of her quilts have been purchased by people from other countries. Edith was also featured in a magazine.

Each year she and her sister, Dorothy, canned fruits and vegetables, including green beans, corn, and peaches. They also pressure-canned jars of boned turkey, mostly for gifts.

Edith is survived by her sister, Dorothy Smith of Sweet Home; niece, Janie Hartman of Lebanon; nephews, Jim Smith of Brownsville and John Smith of Sweet Home; numerous other nieces and nephews living away from the area; five grandchildren; and some great and great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Marshall, in 1954 and her second husband, Paul Sorgen, in 1986; son, Wayne, in 1985; eight brothers and sisters; and one grandson, Jon Marshall, in 2004.

Graveside service will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 7, at Rest Haven Cemetery, 3900 Willamette Street, Eugene, Oregon. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.

Walter Amos Wideman
January 2, 1914 - April 4, 2008

Walter Amos Wideman, age 94, of Albany passed away Friday. He was born in Woodburn, Oregon to Edwin and Leah (Brubaker) Wideman.

He served in the Army from September 9, 1942 to October 2, 1945 and received a Silver Star Medal and a Purple Heart Medal.

He lived in Woodburn, Oregon until his family moved to Tofield, Alberta, Canada when he was about five. In 1924, his family moved to Sheridan, Oregon. He was married there and began his family. In the early 1950’s, he, his wife and young son moved to Grants Pass, Oregon. In the mid-1980’s their family moved to Albany, Oregon.

Walt was a logger and truck driver. He loved the Lord Jesus Christ and served in various ways in local churches in the communities where he lived. For the last number of years he was a member of Prince of Peace Community Church in Adair Village.

He enjoyed gardening, traveling and visiting with his many friends.

Walt is survived by his wife, Berniece; son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Kathy Wideman; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lorene Glassburn Wideman; an infant daughter; parents, Edwin and Leah Wideman and seven siblings.

Viewing will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday, April 10, at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel in Sweet Home, Oregon. A memorial service will be at 4:00 p.m., Friday, April 11, at Prince of Peace Community Church in Adair Village. Gravesides services will be at 2:00 p.m., on Friday at Sheridan Mennonite Church Cemetery in Willamina, Oregon.

Memorial contributions can be made to Prince of Peace Community Church, 7234 NE Arnold Avenue, Adair Village, Oregon 97330.

Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.

Elizabeth Anne Haber
September 28, 1917 - April 5, 2008

Elizabeth “Liz” Anne Haber, age 90, of Brownsville died Saturday in Alaska. She was born in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania to Michael and Anne (Demko) Chismar. She grew up in Aliquippa, moved to El Monte, California in 1945, then to Brownsville in 1973.

She was a member of St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Sweet Home. She loved cooking, gardening, flowers, yoga, and church.

Liz is survived by her son, Charles (Chuck) Haber of Ninilchik, Alaska; sister, Virginia Brenton of Brownsville; brother, Eddie Chismar of Aliquippa, PA; six grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Haber, Sept. 17, 1988 and daughter, Charolette Anne Haber, Sept. 26, 2005.

Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m., Friday at Finley Cemetery in Crawfordsville. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.
