Marty Rizzo Jr.

Matthew "Marty" Nicholas Rizzo Jr., 59, formerly of Gold Hill, died Tuesday (Dec. 9, 1997) in Desert Hot Springs, Calif.

The memorial service was held Dec. 13 in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Desert Hot Springs.

He was born Dec. 13, 1937, in Philadelphia, Pa.

On Sept. 18, 1958, in Sparks, Nev., he married Jeanne Ellen "Sue" Deyhle, who survives. They moved to Gold Hill in 1974 from Montpelier, Idaho, and to Desert Hot Springs in 1986.

Mr. Rizzo was a custom wood carver for more than 25 years.

He enjoyed fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Matthew Nicholas III, Medford; two daughters, Maria Rizzo, Medford, and Tina Tilley, Talent; a brother, Robert, Chester Heights, Pa.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Antonia Rizzo.

Arrangements: Rose Mortuary, Desert Hot Springs.

James A. Gardner

The memorial service for James A. Gardner will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Medford Friends Church. Pastor Mark Burton will officiate.

Mr. Gardner, 77, of White City, died Thursday (Dec. 18, 1997) at Providence Medford Medical Center. Memorial contributions may be made to Medford Friends Church Van Fund, 525 De Barr Ave., Medford, OR 97501 or to Medford Gospel Mission, 409 N. Front St., Medford, OR 97501.

He was born Aug. 2, 1920, in Tupelo, Okla. In 1933, the family moved to Glendale, where he graduated from high school.

On Sept. 24, 1943, in San Diego, Calif., he married Lula Pearl Tomerlin, who survives. Mr. Gardner was a radio and television repair technician.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as an aviation machinist's mate first class. Mr. Gardner enjoyed sports, music, woodworking and computers.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Margaret Elaine Yager, Eagle Point; a son, Michael, Oakland; a sister, Mildred Jones, Eugene; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ward and Pat.

Elizabeth Ann Heple

Elizabeth Ann Heple, 74, of Medford, died Wednesday (Dec. 17, 1997) at Providence Medford Medical Center. A private service is planned.

She was born Elizabeth Ann Smith on Aug. 22, 1923, in Danville, Ill. She moved to the Rogue Valley two years ago from Carson City, Nev.

Mrs. Heple was a teacher. She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the First Christian Church in Carson City.

Survivors include a daughter, Janet Hepworth, Medford; a son, John, Spokane, Wash.; two brothers, Bernard W. Smith and Robert Smith, both San Diego; a sister, Barbara Blalock in Illinois; and eight grandchildren. Her husband, John Heple, died in 1986.

Diane Darlene Medrano

Diane Darlene Medrano, 35, of Medford, died Wednesday (Dec. 17, 1997) at her home. A private service is planned. Interment will be in the family cemetery in Drain.

She was born Diana Jennings on Dec. 19, 1961, in Roseburg. On Aug. 4, 1988, in Medford, she married Manuel Torres, who survives.

Mrs. Medrano was a nursing assistant at Three Fountains Nursing Center in Medford. She enjoyed beadwork, cross-stitch, and bingo.

Survivors, in addition to her husband in Sinaloa, Mexico, include four sons, David, Fernando, Antonio and Carlos, all Medford; her mother, Mary Banks, Medford; her father, Fredrick A. Jennings; a brother, Robert Lampman, Auburn, Wash.; a sister, Susan Putnam, Auburn; and her grandmother, Annie DeLanuay, Talent. A brother died in 1992.

Bertha C. Spooner

Bertha C. Spooner, 82, of Central Point, died Wednesday (Dec. 17, 1997) at a Central Point foster home. No service is planned.

She was born Bertha Radlo on May 2, 1915, in Bellingham, Mass.

On March 6, 1947, in Providence, R.I., she married Fredrick W. Spooner, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1970 from Westport, Conn.

Mrs. Spooner was a bookkeeper. During World War II, she worked in the accounting department of a military hardware manufacturing plant at the Naval Torpedo Station in Newport, R.I.

A ribbon-winning flower arranger, she was president of the Central Point Garden Club.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Mary Jane Spooner, Ashway, R.I.; a brother, Robert Radlo, Central Falls, R.I.; and a sister, Jennifer Augunas, Central Falls.

Mary V.E. Riley

The Mass for Mary Virginia Elisabeth Riley will be at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. Mark Cach will officiate. Interment will follow in Jacksonville Cemetery. Rosary will be read at 8 a.m. prior to the Mass. Mrs. Riley, 48, of Medford, died Friday (Dec. 19, 1997) at Providence Hospital.

She was born Mary Virginia Elisabeth Hamilton on Feb. 23, 1949, in Medford.

She attended St. Mary's Grade School and was a graduate of Medford Senior High School and Southern Oregon College, where she received a degree in psychology and business.

For more than 10 years she worked for Bear Creek Corp. From 1982 to 1992 she worked in child care at First Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Riley was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she provided grief counseling, worked with the Dove Musicians Group, Praise and Prayer Group, and its Folk Choir.

She enjoyed reading and adopted cats.

Survivors include her mother, Mary Virginia Dudley, Medford.

Friends may pay their respects from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday in Perl Chapel in Siskiyou Memorial Park.

Mildred Davis

The graveside service for Mildred Davis will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Eagle Point National Cemetery. Pastor Richard Doig of First Southern Baptist Church will officiate.

Mrs. Davis, 82, of Medford, died Thursday (Dec. 18, 1997) in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Bos 698, Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Mildred Bistow on Sept. 20, 1915, in McAllister, Okla.

On May 24, 1936, in Chandler, Ariz., she married Leonard Elvin Davis who died Oct. 31, 1995.

A member of First Southern Baptist Church, she enjoyed quilting, gardening, and bird-watching.

Survivors include two daughters, Lenora Kirklin, White City, and Ruth Richie, Sams Valley; a son, Boyd, Medford; a sister, Alma King, Medford; 15 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren. A brother, Bert Bistow died in 1992, and a sister, Wilma Oldham, in 1987.

Quintin B. Jordan

The graveside service for Quintin B. Jordan will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Logtown Cemetery. Stan Johnson will officiate.

Mr. Jordan, 83, of Medford, died Friday (Dec. 19, 1997) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 20, 1914, in Maida, N.D. He moved to Talent in 1942 and to Jacksonville in 1944. He worked for the sawmill in Talent.

On Dec. 5, 1959, in Reno, Nev., he married Mabel CarterGroves, who survives.

For 30 years he worked for Medford Corp., retiring in 1975. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working on cars.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Harold, Alturas, Calif., and David, Tahoe Vista, Calif.; one daughter, Cammy Jordan, Junction City; five sisters, Fern Sills, Eagle Point, Mildred Pengilly, Fall City, Wash., Lois Sanchez, Citrus Heights, Calif., Beatrice Ricken, Lake Villa, Ill., and Viola Bagaason, Clearbrook, Minn.; three brothers, Henry, Roseville, Calif., Lowell, Bagley, Minn., and Elmer, Langdon, N.D.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Two brothers preceded him in death.

Mark E. Lawrence

The funeral for Mark Edward Lawrence will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Memory Gardens Chapel. Jim Larson of Rogue Valley Christian Church will officiate. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Mr. Lawrence, 87, of Medford, died Friday (Dec. 19, 1997) at Three Fountains Nursing Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Southern Oregon Historical Society, 106 N. Central Ave., Medford, OR 97501.

He was born Jan. 29, 1910, in Missoula, Mont.

He was a 1934 graduate of the University of Montana, with a bachelor of science degree in botany and forestry.

On Aug. 16, 1936, in Missoula, he married Alice Brunson, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1954 from Vale.

From 1940 to 1973, he was with the Bureau of Land Management and the Grazing Service.

During World War II, Mr. Lawrence was a hydraulics instructor on P40s in the U.S. Army Air Corps in Lincoln, Neb.

He wrote "Woodchips and Trail Dust" and "History of the Greensprings Mountain."

He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge in Shoshane, Idaho, and the Southern Oregon Historical Society, serving on its Trail Committee. He enjoyed reading to his grandchildren, poetry, mountain climbing, and photography.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Mark Eugene, Salem, and Linn James,Pocatello, Idaho; a sister, Martha A. Lawrence, Missoula; and two grandchildren.

Two sisters, Mildred Robertson and Margarite Polhamus, preceded him in death.

Friends may pay their respects from noon to 4 p.m. today in Memory Gardens Chapel.
