Bessie Berteena Hill
The funeral for Bessie Berteena Hill will be at 11 a.m. today at Applegate Community Church. The Rev. Ken Schubert will officiate. Interment will be in Missouri Flat Cemetery.
Mrs. Hill, 82, of Provolt, died Saturday (Jan. 17, 1998) at her home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Applegate Valley Fire District No. 9, 1095 Upper Applegate Road, Jacksonville, OR 97530.
She was born Bessie Berteena Elmore on Sept. 22, 1915, in Grants Pass. The family moved to their Applegate farm two years later.
Mrs. Hill attended Thompson Creek School and was a 1931 graduate of Medford High School.
She received her teaching certificate from what is now Southern Oregon University, and later received her master's degree in teaching from Oregon State University.
On Aug. 2, 1942, in Applegate, she married Lester A. Hill, who preceded her in death. They moved to his family's farm in Provolt.
Mrs. Hill taught for one year each in Waldo and Antelope, and substituted at Thompson Creek School. She also taught at Oak Grove School in Medford, Applegate and Murphy schools and in Grants Pass at Riverside, North Junior and Grants Pass High schools.
She retired from the high school in 1976.
After retiring, she was a volunteer for several years with the Laubach reading program.
A member of the Applegate Community Church since 1946, Mrs. Hill taught the adult Sunday school class there for several years.
She was a member of Grants Pass Retired Educators, Applegate Friends of the Library, Applegate Historical Society, Applegate Grange, Applegate Home Extension Unit and the Southern Oregon Rose Society.
Survivors include two sons, Wesley Scott and John Calvin, both Provolt; two stepsons, Larry, Eugene, and Randell, LaVerne, Calif.; two grandsons and seven stepgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Leslie Archie; a daughter, Linda Lou Hill; and a brother, C.H. Elmore.
Friends may pay their respects from 10 to 11 a.m. today at Applegate Community Church.

John Neal Nelson III
The memorial service for John Neal Nelson III will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Memory Gardens Chapel.
Mr. Nelson, 52, of Central Point, died Thursday at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland of lymphoma.
He was born Dec. 16, 1945, in Medford.
Mr. Nelson was a member of the Rogue River National Forest's Hot Shot Crew before joining Cascade Wood Products, where he was a supervisor. He worked there for 26 years.
He served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Nelson hunted and fished throughout the West, Southwest, and Alaska.
Survivors include a son, John N. IV, Central Point; a daughter, Margaret Nelson, Vancouver, Wash.; his mother, Sylvia Nelson, Central Point; a sister, Jan Hedgpeth, Coos Bay; and two grandchildren. His father, John N. Nelson II, died in 1997.

Dorothy F. Moe-Reifel
The funeral for Dorothy F. Moe-Reifel will be at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Lundberg's L.B. Hall Funeral Home, Grants Pass. Interment will be in Inglewood, Calif.
Mrs. Moe-Reifel, 96, of Grants Pass, died Sunday (Jan. 18, 1998) at an adult foster care home in Grants Pass.
She was born Dorothy Wagstaff on April 1, 1901, in Birmingham, England. The family came to America in 1920.
In 1924, in California, she married Ernest Moe, who died Aug. 19, 1962.
In 1968, in Yucca Valley, Calif., she married John Reifel, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Moe-Reifel was a postal clerk for the U.S. Post Office for many years.
She was a PTA president for the Midway School District in Lucerne Valley, Calif., from 1936 to 1938, and was later was presented a life membership.
In March 1938 she became a U.S. citizen.
Mrs. Moe-Reifel was volunteer in the Jackson County Library senior outreach program, selecting and delivering books to shut-ins. She also worked on the library levy in 1991 and encouraged teenagers to get involved in reading.
Mrs. Moe-Reifel was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She enjoyed reading and walking.
Survivors include two daughters, Bette F. Murrey, Grants Pass, and Bonnie J. Shaffer, Sandy, Utah; a son, Eugene E. Moe, Hayden Lake, Idaho; a brother, Geoffry Wagstaff, Nice, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Beverly Jean Cochran.

Esta Marie Darling
Esta Marie Darling, 73, formerly of Medford, died Wednesday (Dec. 24, 1997) in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

She was born Esta Marie Toelle on Aug. 23, 1924, in Portland.
In 1944 she married Charles M. Darling, who died in 1991. They moved to Medford in 1962, to Eureka, Calif., in 1982, and Greeley, Colo., in 1989. She moved to Newport following her husband's death.
Mrs. Darling served on the board of the American Red Cross for Jackson County and was volunteer consultant for the American Red Cross Cascades Division.
She was past president of the YWCA in Eureka, and past president of the Greeley Women's Club. She was active in United Way.
Mrs. Darling enjoyed swimming, sewing, playing the piano and painting.
Survivors include two sons, James, Woodburn, and Thomas, Lake Havasu City; a daughter, Deanna, Virginia City, Nev.; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Charles A. Moote
Charles A. Moote, 90, of Medford, died Monday (Jan. 19, 1998) at a foster care residence. No service is planned.
He was born May 28, 1907, in Kansas.
Mr. Moote moved to the Rogue Valley nine years ago from Stockton, Calif., where he had lived for 47 years.
For more than 50 years, he was a self-employed carpenter.
Mr. Moote enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting.
Survivors include three sisters, Hazel King, Medford, Mary Kirkham, Goodland, Kan., and Mina Nealis, Sharron Springs, Kan. He was preceded in death by a brother, William.

Alta May Yocom
The funeral for Alta May Yocom will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Siskiyou Chapel. Interment will be in Eastwood IOOF Cemetery.
Mrs. Yocom, 99, of Medford, died Saturday (Jan. 17, 1998) in Medford.
Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
She was born Alta May Lewis on May 22, 1898, in Erwin, S.D. She attended Aberdeen Normal School in South Dakota, receiving her teaching certificate.
She taught in country schools in South Dakota, Nevada and Oregon, the last being in Antelope. She retired in 1924.
On Sept. 1, 1923, in Salem, she married Robert "Mac" Yocom, who preceded her in death. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1936.
Mrs. Yocom was a former member of the Sojourners, 500, and Monday clubs and Roxy Ann Grange.
She enjoyed playing cards.
Survivors include two daughters, LaVerne Young, Medford, and Barbara Pixler, Anderson, Calif.; a sister, Ruth Smelty, Moscow, Idaho; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert; a daughter, Arlene Yocom; a sister; and three brothers.

Hazel May Arens
The graveside service for Hazel May Arens will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Eastwood IOOF Cemetery, Medford. The Rev. Flo Bohnert will officiate.
Mrs. Arens, 91, of Medford, died Saturday (Jan. 17, 1998) at her home.
She was born May 6, 1906, in Talent, the daughter of Charles Henry and Nettie Crain Hanscom.
She attended schools in the Rogue Valley.
On Sept. 25, 1922, in Jacksonville, she married Frederick W. Arens, who died in October of 1994.
Mrs. Arens enjoyed home projects and house plants.
Survivors include two sons, Arnold R., Eagle Point, and Wayne E., Rosemead, Calif.; two brothers, Harry A. Hanscom and Harold E. Hanscom, both Eagle Point; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Melvin C., in 1939; two brothers, Earl and Roy Hanscom; and two granddaughters.
