Gertrude W. Easterling
Gertrude W. Easterling, 108, of Ashland, a 1905 graduate of what is now Southern Oregon University, died Friday (Feb. 20, 1998) at Linda Vista Care Center.
Mrs. Easterling remembered when Ashland's streets were lined with boardwalks, when Medford was a town of wooden false fronts, when Jacksonville had a Chinatown.
She was born May 8, 1889, in Phoenix, a daughter of Otto and Marie Biede. The family moved to Jacksonville in 1890, where her father operated a tin shop and hardware store. His name can still be seen on the side of a brick building along Oregon Street there.
Her parents were German, and she grew up speaking German. The family became close friends with early photographer Peter Britt -- a fellow German speaker.
"When we were children," Mrs. Easterling said in a 1993 interview, "I had a sister, and other kids thought we were queer because we spoke German all the time."
"Britt was older than my father, but I remember him very well."
When the family moved to Ashland "There were only two cars. They were both owned by real estate dealers."
After graduating from Ashland's Normal School, she found a job with the city of Ashland at a time when far fewer women joined the work force.
She worked as a city clerk from 1906 until 1918 when she was appointed city recorder to fill the unexpired term of John Wimer. She served as city recorder through 1933.

In 1940, she married Ollie Easterling, who worked in the city electricity department. He died 1962.
Mrs. Easterling could also recall the days when the Ku Klux Klan was active in Ashland. The brick house built by her undertaker stepfather on Ashland's Nob Hill. The early plays at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, when there were boxing matches in intermissions to beef up the audiences.
A life member of Soroptimists in Ashland, she joined the group in 1949.
