Ella Lyster
Ella Lyster, 98, of Grants Pass, died Thursday (Feb. 19, 1998) at Highland House Nursing Center. No service is planned. Interment will be in Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.
She was born Ella Clausen on Feb. 3, 1900, in Denmark.
In 1929, she married Merton Lyster, who died in 1984. They moved to Medford in the mid-1940s from Burlingame, Calif.
Mrs. Lyster was a graduate of Eureka, Calif., Business College and later taught there. She also had worked in a San Francisco law office.
She moved to Grants Pass in 1984 from Medford.
Mrs. Lyster enjoyed bridge, gardening, and traveling.
Survivors include a sister, Marie Rehling, Grants Pass. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Nisson and Lena Christensen.

Barbara Jean Burke
The graveside service for Barbara Jean Burke was held Tuesday in the Jacksonville Cemetery. Ken Williams of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints officiated, and Michael Savia, a grandson, dedicated the grave.
Mrs. Burke, 71, of Eagle Point, died Friday (Feb. 20, 1998) at the Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.
She was born Barbara Renslow on March 15, 1926, in Panora, Iowa.
Mrs. Burke moved to the Rogue Valley in 1997 from San Bernardino, Calif.
She enjoyed making quilts.
Survivors include a son, John Dewey Burke, Eagle Point; three daughters, Doreen Kae Savia, Eagle Point, Beverly Jean Yarwood, Vancouver, Wash., and Carol Anne Spargo, San Bernardino; a brother, Larry Renslow, San Jose, Calif.; 19 grandchildren; and 39 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Norma Eileen March.

Helen M. Rensfield
Helen Margaret Rensfield, 86, of Talent, died Sunday (Feb. 22, 1998) at Ashland Community Hospital. No service is planned.
Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
She was born Nov. 9, 1911, in International Falls, Minn.
On Jan. 25, 1930, in International Falls, she married Joseph Rensfield, who survives. They moved to Ashland in 1944.
Mrs. Rensfield was known as the "Pickle Lady," having developed a "slightly hot" dill pickle that she gave to pickle lovers everywhere, including entertainment personalities, and the Oregon Supreme Court. She chose to keep her recipe secret.
Survivors include three sons, Chuck, Escondido, Calif., Richard, San Diego, and Kenneth, Santa Clara, Calif.; a daughter, Barbara Brinkworth, Windsor, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Joan; a brother, Jack; and two sisters, Mary and Anne.

Fritz Betschart
The funeral for Fritz Betschart will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Medford. The Rev. Kelly Vandehey will officiate. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Rosary will be recited at 7:30 tonight in the Conger-Morris Chapel, Medford.
Mr. Betschart, 83, of Phoenix, died Monday (Feb. 23, 1998) at his home.
In April 1977, he was one of the first heart bypass patients at Rogue Valley Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 30, 1915, in Tillamook. The family moved to Siskiyou County, Calif., where he attended Delphic School in Montague.
On Nov. 8, 1937, in Yreka, Calif., he married Marie Katherine Betschart, who died in 1992. They returned to Tillamook at the start of World War II to work on the family dairy farm.
In 1951, the Betscharts moved to Medford where he went to work for "Nooks" Naumes at what is now Naumes Equipment. Mr. Betschart retired as partsman in 1986.
A member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Oregon Hunters Association, he also bowled with the Industrial and Senior bowling leagues and was a volunteer greeter for the St. Vincent De Paul Society.
Survivors include two sons, Jim, Medford, and Bob, Sandy; two daughters, Elizabeth Manthe, Roseburg, and Edith Reich, Pendleton; a brother, Louie, Cornelius; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, George F.

Bessie Woolven
The memorial service for Bessie Woolven will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Ashland Seventh-day Adventist Church. Philip L. Welklin will officiate. Private inurnment will be in Eagle Point National Cemetery.
Mrs. Woolven, 102, of Medford, died Monday (Feb. 23, 1998) at the Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.
She was born July 14, 1895, in San Francisco, and was living there at the time of the 1906 earthquake.
On June 24, 1920, in San Francisco, she married William Woolven, who died Feb. 12, 1985. They moved to Ashland in 1941.
Mrs. Woolven was a member of the Ashland Seventh-day Adventist Church, where she was active in the Dorcas Society and worked as Sabbath School secretary and church clerk.
She enjoyed embroidery and crochet.
Survivors include three daughters, Barbara Mason, Colleen Christie, and Betty Tall, all Medford; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, William Jr.; a daughter, Lois Johnson; two sisters; and a brother.

Richard L. Adney
The memorial service for Richard L. Adney will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Hull & Hull Chapel in Grants Pass.
Mr. Adney, 37, of Grants Pass, died Friday (Feb. 13, 1998) at Providence Medford Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 6, 1960, in Oakland, Calif.
Mr. Adney was a 1978 graduate of Yolo High School in West Sacramento, Calif.
He moved to Grants Pass 3 1/2 years ago from Sacramento.
Mr. Adney had been a parts puller for Action Auto Parts & Recycling in Medford until December.
He enjoyed boating and music.
Survivors include a son, James, Grants Pass; two daughters, Christina Adney and Claudia Jones, both Sacramento; his parents, Jim and Mona Adney, Grants Pass; a sister, Stephanie Adney, Grants Pass; and a brother, Russell Middleton, Eugene.

Edna Sewall Gerber
Edna Diana Gerber, 101, formerly of Medford, died Sunday (Feb. 8, 1998) in North Bend. A private service is planned. Inurnment will be in the family plot in the Jacksonville Cemetery.
She was born Edna Sewall on Aug. 28, 1896, in Minnetonka Mills, Minn. She earned her teaching certificate from the Normal School in Minneapolis.
Mrs. Gerber was a teacher for several years in Montana.
On June 5, 1920, in Montana, she married Paul E. Gerber, who died in April 1984. They farmed in Montana and Alberta before moving to Medford in December 1928. They moved to Reedsport in 1940 and to Portland in 1942. After the war, they bought a farm in the Yachats River Valley.
They returned to Medford in 1983.
Mrs. Gerber was active in Jackson County Extension Service, Parent-Teacher Assocation and Central Point Christian Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Helen Foster, Medford, and Mary Lou McQuigg, Coos Bay; four grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Donald Sewall Gerber.

Jesse Elmo Sawyer
Jesse Elmo Sawyer, 54, of Prospect, died Friday (Feb. 20, 1998) at his home. A gathering of family and close friends will be held later at the home to honor him.
He was born April 28, 1943, in Gravette, Ark. The family moved to the Rogue Valley in 1952.
Mr. Sawyer was a timber faller.
He enjoyed the outdoors, particularly drives in the woods with friends.
Survivors include three daughters, Sheila Schultz and Cora Sowell, both Prospect, and Vonnie Messerschmidt, Forks, Wash.; a brother, Gene, Eagle Point; two sisters, Glee Hines, Bandon, and Vivian Kath, Mountainburg, Ark.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse J. and Cora M. Sawyer.
