Helen A. Milne

The memorial service for Helen A. Milne, champion golfer, will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Perl Funeral Services-Siskiyou Chapel, Medford. The Rev. Robert Larson of Ascension Lutheran Church will officiate. Private inurnment will be in Siskiyou Memorial Park.

Mrs. Milne, 78, of Medford, died Wednesday (Feb. 25, 1998) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Helen A. Thompson on Jan. 21, 1920, in San Francisco. In 1922, the family moved to Medford, where she graduated from Medford High School.

After attending nursing school at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland, she returned to Medford, where she was a secretary for many years with several insurance agencies.

On Oct. 21, 1966, in Medford, she married Edwin E. Milne, who survives.

The couple owned the Quality Market, where she was bookkeeper for 10 years.

Mrs. Milne was a Pink Lady for 15 years at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

An avid golfer, Mrs. Milne won the Oregon State Women's Championship twice and was runner-up once, Rogue Valley Country Club's Women's Championship 24 times, and the Southern Oregon Amateur Tournament Championship 10 times.

She was a charter member of the Medford Sports Hall of Fame and volunteer advisor for local high school golfers.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, John, Medford; two daughters, Carolyn Brown, San Francisco, and Mary Norrie, Vancouver, Wash.; a brother, Jack Thompson, Medford; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Services-Siskiyou, Medford.

Viola Koutnik Bearg

The memorial service for Viola Koutnik Bearg will be at 4 p.m. Friday in the Mountain View Baptist Church, Talent.

Mrs. Bearg, 88, of Talent, died Tuesday (Feb. 24, 1998) at her home.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Services-Siskiyou, Medford.

Josephine F. Smith

Josephine Florence Smith, 82, of Medford, died Thursday (Feb. 19, 1998) at her home. No service is planned. Private interment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

She was born May 23, 1915, in London, England.

Mrs. Smith was a licensed practical nurse for 20 years in San Diego and Detroit, retiring in the early 1970s.

She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1991 from St. Petersburg, Fla.

Mrs. Smith enjoyed bowling.

Survivors include her companion, Lloyd R. Rollins, Medford; three daughters, Donna J. Monroe, St. Petersburg, Shirley J. Schmidt, San Diego, and Beverley J. Meadows, Riverview, Mich; and a sister, Alice Zembrzuski, Flat Rock, Mich. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Smith.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Pat Patterson

The graveside service for Gerald Everett "Pat" Patterson will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the Antioch Cemetery, Sams Valley. Lyle McCaw, minister of the White City Christian Church, will officiate.

Mr. Patterson, 90, of Sams Valley, died Monday (Feb. 23, 1998) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501 or Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Dec. 13, 1907, in Wayne County, Ohio.

On Sept. 4, 1948, in Greenup, Ky., he married Mildred L. Rauiher, who died in 1971. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1952 from Ohio.

Mr. Patterson worked in the timber industry and in security with Harry & David.

A member of the California Houndsmen Association, he raised hunting dogs.

Survivors include his companion, Carmita Bowlin, Sams Valley; four sons, Robert E., David and Gerald E., all in Ohio, and Donald, in Florida; a sister, Phyllis McKinnon, Eustis, Fla.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Lois Maxine Travis

Lois Maxine Travis, 81, formerly of Ashland and Medford, died Monday (Feb. 23, 1998) in Springfield. Her home was in Springfield.

No service is planned. Inurnment will be in the IOOF Cemetery, Santa Cruz, Calif.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 1207, Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Lois Christensen on Aug. 13, 1916, in Billings, Mont.

On July 2, 1934, in Hardin, Mont., she married Donald Travis, who died in 1969.

They lived in Ashland from 1939 to 1941, and she lived in Medford from 1972 to 1987, when she moved to Springfield.

While living in Nome, Alaska, following World War II she was office manager and her husband was a bush pilot for Alaska Star Airlines.

Mrs. Travis was a ticket agent for Greyhound Bus Lines for 25 years.

She was a member of Greyhound-Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1225, Daughters of the Nile, and Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed reading, cooking, and traveling.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna Rodoni, Springfield; a son, Robert, Camdenton, Mo.; three brothers, Claire Christensen, Scotts Valley, Calif., Robert Christensen, Dayton, Nev., and Carl Christensen, Aurora, Colo.; a sister, Dorothy Adams, Fresno, Calif.; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Springfield Memorial Gardens.

Robert John Wilson

Robert John Wilson, 81, of Medford, died Thursday (Feb. 19, 1998) at his home. A private service will be held later.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501

He was born Jan. 31, 1917, in Chicago.

In 1940, in Chicago, he married Lucille Zakeski, who died in 1993.

Mr. Wilson was a printer in Arizona before moving to California.

He came to the Rogue Valley 10 years ago from Cameron Park, Calif.

Mr. Wilson was a member of the Rogue Valley Country Club and enjoyed golfing.

Survivors include a son, Cary R., Atherton, Calif.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Clifford.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation & Funeral Care, Central Point.

Etna Flo VanMeter

The memorial service for Etna Flo VanMeter will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the First United Methodist Church, Medford. The Rev. Emmett Shortreed will officiate.

Mrs. VanMeter, 61, of Medford, died Sunday (Feb. 22, 1998) at her home.

She was born Etna Joiner on Feb. 7, 1937, in Calhan, Colo.

On Oct. 5, 1958, in Wilbur, Douglas County, she married Ray VanMeter, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1984 from Roseburg.

Mrs. VanMeter worked for Bear Creek Corp. from 1990 to 1998 in customer services, mail order department.

A member of First United Methodist Church of Medford, she sang in its choir. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star, Central Point, and enjoyed gardening and sewing.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Laura VanMeter, Medford, and Barbara Jaworski, Roseburg; two sons, Mike, Bend, and Sam, Troutdale; her mother, Naomi Hansen, Grants Pass; two sisters, Sue Lee, Grants Pass, and Helen Batey, Mesa, Ariz.; and seven grandchildren. Her father, Milburn Joiner, died in 1974.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives Alder Creek.

Ernest Redington

Ernest Redington, 83, of White City, died Wednesday (Feb. 25, 1998) in White City. No service is planned. Interment will be in Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eagle Point Historical Museum, P.O. Box 201, Eagle Point, OR 97524.

He was born April 1, 1914, in Oxford, Idaho.

He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1948 from Idaho.

Mr. Redington was a mechanic for a trucking company.

He also served on the Eagle Point Historical Museum board of directors.

He had served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Redington was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints White City Ward, the National Rifle Association, and a life member of the Handy Man Club.

Survivors include three daughters, Tina Redington, Eagle Point, Sharon Beck, Medford, and Christine Taylor, Roseburg; a sister, Agnes Bricker, Salt Lake City, Utah; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn; an infant son; several brothers; and a sister.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.
