Theodore F. Martens

The graveside service for Theodore F. Martens will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mr. Martens, 50, of Grants Pass, died Tuesday (March 3, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, Medford.

Paul S. Latvala

The graveside service for Paul S. Latvala will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Eagle Point National Cemetery. Chaplain James Hanley will officiate.

Mr. Latvala, 60, of Medford, died Sunday (March 1, 1998) at his home.

He was born Dec. 13, 1937, in Los Angeles.

Mr. Latvala was a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving from 1955 to 1963.

He was a parts man at Airport Chevrolet from 1985 until retiring in September 1997.

Mr. Latvala enjoyed hunting, hiking, and camping.

Survivors include a son, Paul Grady Latvala, and a daughter, Gwen Latvala, both Medford.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Services-Siskiyou, Medford.

John Franklin Woerner

John Franklin Woerner, 77, of Rogue River, died Monday (March 2, 1998) at his home. No service is planned. Private inurnment will be in Hawthorne Memorial Gardens.

He was born May 10, 1920, in Inglewood, Calif.

Mr. Woerner graduated from Inglewood High School in 1938 and from Santa Monica College in 1940.

On Sept. 18, 1947, in Yuma, Ariz., he married Lois Irving, who survives.

Mr. Woerner was a longshoreman for 40 years at Los Angeles Harbor until retiring at age 62.

While in California they raised a granddaughter, Colleen Woerner, now of Mission Viejo, Calif.

He was a member of the International Longshoremen's Warehousemen's Union Local 13 in Wilmington, Calif.

His hobbies included plastic and wood carving, leather work, upholstery and mechanics.

Survivors, in addition to his wife and granddaughter, include a son, James, Harbor City, Calif.; and a great-granddaughter.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7 p.m. today and 1 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors, Grants Pass.

Ruth E. Fowler

The funeral for Ruth Esther Fowler will be at 2 p.m. today at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland. Pastor Greg Weston of the Park Street Church of Christ will officiate. Private interment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park in Medford.

Mrs. Fowler, 97, of Ashland, died Sunday (March 1, 1998) at an Ashland foster home.

She was born Ruth Esther Fisher on July 29, 1900, in Beloit, Kan. In 1909 the family moved to Eastern Colorado by wagon, where they homesteaded. She returned to Kansas in 1916.

On May 1, 1918, in Concordia, Kan., she married Edgar Fowler, who died in 1965. They lived in the Beloit and Glen Elder areas until 1934, when they moved to Speed, Kan.

In 1936 they moved to Ashland, where they operated the Cloverleaf Dairy on Helman Street for 13 years.

Mrs. Fowler moved to an Ashland foster care home in 1996.

She had been a housekeeper and worked for local canneries.

Mrs. Fowler was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include four daughters, Maxine Hartwell, Phoenix, Esther Svaren, Ashland, Marie Williams, Albany, and Carol Heinzman, Roseburg; six sons, Russell, Medford, Lowell, Talent, Harold, Little Applegate, Chet, Santa Ana, Calif., Robert, Sacramento, Calif., and Clifford, Portland; 30 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and numerous stepchildren.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Ray Burkhart

Ray Burkhart, 85, formerly of Medford, Applegate and Phoenix, died Saturday (Jan. 24, 1998) in Bakersfield, Calif. The service was held Jan. 24 in Bakersfield. Interment was in Siskiyou Memorial Park in Medford.

He was born July 1, 1912, in Taft, Calif.

Mr. Burkhart moved to Alaska in 1957, where he was an airplane fueler for Northwest Airlines, leaving the state in 1969, when he came to the Rogue Valley.

Mr. Burkhart owned Burkhart Co., wig emporiums in both Medford and Grants Pass. He lived in the Applegate area until 1986, when he moved to Phoenix. He retired in 1989.

He moved to Bakersfield in 1994.

He was active in TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly).

Survivors include a daughter, Laverne Swoape, Bakersfield; a stepson, Jim Bourbonnais, Anchorage, Alaska; a sister, Betty Callahan, Fremont, Calif.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma; his second wife, Gyda; a son, Jack; and a stepson, David.

Arrangements: Mish Funeral Home, Oildale, Calif.

Ruth Helen Bilderback

The funeral for Ruth Helen Bilderback will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Hillcrest Chapel in Medford. David Humphreys, minister, of Phoenix Church of Christ will officiate. Interment will be private.

Mrs. Bilderback, 82, of Talent, died Sunday (March 1, 1998).

She was born Ruth Helen Briggs on Nov. 24, 1915, in Coquille.

On Nov. 3, 1934, in North Bend, she married Valis R. Bilderback, who died in 1986. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1950 from Klamath Falls.

She was a resident of the Phoenix-Talent area since 1951.

Mrs. Bilderback had been a member of the Phoenix Church of Christ since 1951.

She enjoyed gardening, reading and canning.

Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Reese, Phoenix, and Joyce Renfro, Gold Hill; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.

Nancy E. Simmons

The memorial service for Nancy E. Simmons will be at 4 p.m. Saturday in Siskiyou Chapel. Pastor Lyle McCaw of White City Christian Church will officiate. Inurnment will be in Siskiyou Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Mrs. Simmons, 60, of Medford, died Tuesday (Feb. 24, 1998) at her home.

She was born Nancy McLain on Nov. 23, 1937, in Portland.

In Portland she married Earl H. Simmons, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Simmons moved to the Rogue Valley in 1986 from Phoenix, Ariz., where she had lived for five years and worked as a bookkeeper.

She enjoyed ceramics, artwork and collectibles.

Survivors include a son, Anthony, Medford; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Services, Medford.
