Curtis V. Coppedge

The graveside service for Curtis Vincil Coppedge will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Alturas, Calif., Cemetery.

Mr. Coppedge, 41, of Medford, died Sunday (March 8, 1998) in Medford, from complications of multiple sclerosis.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Oregon Chapter, 1650 N.W. Front Ave., Suite 190, Portland, OR 97210.

He was born Nov. 5, 1956, in La Jolla, Calif.

Mr. Coppedge graduated from Henley High School in Klamath Falls and attended Oregon State University at Corvallis.

Mr. Coppedge was a structural designer.

He moved to Medford three years ago from Alturas.

He enjoyed gardening and motorcycling.

Survivors include two sons, Vincil Lyle and Shane Curtis, both Klamath Falls; his mother, Dorothea Chism, Klamath Falls; two brothers, Bryan, Medford, and Grant, Olympia, Wash.; and a sister, Karen Coppedge, Medford. He was preceded in death by his father, Lyle Watson Coppedge.

Arrangements: Kerr Mortuary, Alturas.

Rusty Francis

The graveside service for Rusty Francis will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford. Pastor Paul Hagedorn will officiate.

Rusty, 14, of Medford, died Monday (March 9, 1998) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Campus Life Underground, 400 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504 or Southern Oregon Drug Awareness, Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, 2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Dec. 19, 1983, in Medford.

Rusty attended Hoover Elementary School and Hedrick Middle School, where he was a member of the seventh grade football team.

He enjoyed snowboarding, skateboarding, baseball, reading and drawing.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Wayne Francis and Sandra Walden, Medford; his mother and stepfather, Denise and Harold Ellis, Medford; a sister, Jessica Francis, Medford; a brother, Rick, Salem; two stepbrothers, Chad Ellis, Seattle, and Hal Ellis, Atlanta, Ga.; a stepsister, Colleen Gunn, Medford; and his grandfather, Ralph Francis, Montclair, Calif.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Services-Siskiyou, Medford.

Roy Amos Black

The memorial service for Roy Amos Black will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Medford First Church of God. Pastor John Wiuff will officiate. Interment will be at 2 p.m. in Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mr. Black, 67, of Medford, died Monday (March 9, 1998) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Church of God, 2000 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Sept. 11, 1930, in Ashland, a son of Jess Warren and Irene Bushnell Black.

On March 7, 1953, in Spokane, Wash., he married Helen Adler, who survives.

Mr. Black was a long-haul truck driver for various companies.

He was a lay minister for the First Church of God and enjoyed reading, hunting, and fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Warren, White City, and Daniel, Medford; three daughters, Sandra Schmatz and Cynthia McClure, both Medford, and Sheryll Lobdell, Portland; two brothers, Ray W., his twin, Ashland, and Clarence Pyle, Longview, Wash.; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Alice and Bessie.

Friends may pay their respects from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Central Valley Cremation & Funeral Care, Central Point.

Melva D. Finlay

The funeral for Melva D. Finlay will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in the River View Cemetery Chapel, Portland. The Rev. Woodley White of the Milwaukie Presbyterian Church will officiate. Interment will be in River View Cemetery.

She was born Melva Krichel on March 6, 1904, in Keokuk, Iowa.

On June 6, 1925, in Keokuk, she married Harold M. Finlay, who died in 1985.

Mrs. Finlay moved to the Rogue Valley 10 years ago from Hillsboro.

She was a life member of the Presbyterian Church and enjoyed gardening and traveling.

Survivors include three daughters, Kathryn Bulger, Central Point, and Paula Harr and Pauline Hartford, both San Antonio, Texas; two sons, Jerry R., Tualatin, and Allan R., Sacramento, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two sisters.

Velma Davenport

Velma V. Davenport, 86, who with her husband, William "Bill" Jr., were co-owners of the Davenport Appliance Store in Medford for a number of years, died Tuesday (March 10, 1998) at a Medford foster care home.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Perl Funeral Service-Siskiyou Chapel with the Rev. Emmett Shortreed officiating. Interment will be in Siskiyou Memorial Park.

The couple moved to Medford in 1950 from Salem, starting their business at 2101 W. Main St. They relocated to 405 N. Central Ave., in 1958. They retired in 1989.

The Davenports were active members of the Roxy Ann Gem and Mineral Club and she was active in Parent Teacher associations at Oak Grove, McLoughlin Junior High and Medford High schools.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

As a volunteer, Mrs. Davenport did accounting for senior citizens in the valley.

The couple traveled extensively in both the United States and abroad.

She was born Velma Viola Vanscoy on Sept. 14, 1911, in Creston, Iowa.

Mrs. Davenport worked in the business office of the Creston News Advertiser, then was office manager for Iowa Southern Utilities.

On July 2, 1934, in Creston, she married William J. Davenport Jr., who survives. They both quit their jobs -- he was with Singer Sewing Machine Co. -- and moved to the Los Angeles area, where he had a job with Singer. They lived there until moving to Salem in 1946.

She enjoyed sewing and cooking.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Joann Alldredge, Medford, and Elaine Davenport, Austin, Texas; and a granddaughter. Six brothers and sisters preceded her in death.

Opal F. Maphet

The funeral for Opal F. Maphet will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Memory Gardens Chapel. The Rev. Harold Anderson of Murphy Chapel will officiate. Entombment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Mrs. Maphet, 87, of Talent, died Sunday (March 8, 1998) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Jackson House, Tenant Council, Assisted Living, 300 Suncrest Road, Talent, OR 97540.

She was born Opal F. Crump on Aug. 9, 1910, in Dane, Okla.

On Sept. 30, 1927, in Cleo Springs, Okla., she married Cecil T. Maphet, who died in 1990. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1945 from Compton, Calif.

Mrs. Maphet was postmaster in Murphy from 1945 until retiring in 1974. The couple owned and operated the Murphy General Store and Post Office for 30 years.

She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star and the Britt Music Festival.

Survivors include a daughter, Cecilia Combs, Medford; a son, Max, Grants Pass; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Memory Gardens Mortuary.

Elva Mae Seargent

The graveside service for Elva Mae Seargent will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mrs. Seargent, 77, of Central Point, died Monday (March 9, 1998) at her home.

She was born Elva Mae Hinton on Dec. 7, 1920, in Oklahoma City.

On Sept. 20, 1937, in Oklahoma City, she married John R. Seargent, who died in 1986. They then moved to the Rogue Valley from Southern California.

Mrs. Seargent was a Christian.

Survivors include a son, John, Central Point; and two sisters, Ruby Robinson, Central Point, and Pauline Rava, in California. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Sherman Davis and J.C. Hinton.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7:30 p.m. today at Central Valley Chapel in Central Point.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation & Funeral Care.

Babe McCullough

Beatrice "Babe" McCullough, 84, of Rogue River, died Thursday (March 5, 1998) at Three Fountains Nursing Center in Medford. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to Dogs for the Deaf, 10175 Wheeler Road, Central Point, OR 97502, or the Grants Pass Lions Club, P.O. Box 6, Grants Pass, OR 97528.

She was born Beatrice Aurella Strope on April 5, 1913, in Toledo, Wash.

Mrs. McCullough was a line inspector for Kaiser Shipyard during World War II.

She owned and operated a restaurant in Jamul, Calif., for five years. In San Diego, Calif., she helped stock Sea World.

Mrs. McCullough moved to Gold Hill from San Diego. in 1970, and to Rogue River in 1994.

In Gold Hill, she worked at Sam's Service Station for many years.

She enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Archibald, Olympia, Wash.; two sisters, Mary I. Dan Zeyl, Olympia, and Evelyn R. Cleveland, Pacific City; a brother, P.A. Russell, Walnut Creek, Calif.; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Southern Oregon Cremation Society, Grants Pass.
