Cliff Friend

The memorial service for Clifton M. Friend will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Conger-Morris Chapel, Medford. Private inurnment will be in the Medford IOOF Cemetery and the Tenmile Cemetery in Douglas County.

Mr. Friend, 84, of Medford, died Sunday (March 22, 1998) in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Francis Cheney Family Place, 2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford, OR 97504 or Eagle Point Grange Hall, Access Ramp Fund, 55 Shasta Ave., Eagle Point, OR 97524.

He was born Aug. 3, 1913, in Roseburg, a fourth-generation Oregonian. His grandfather sailed around Cape Horn and walked from San Francisco to Jacksonville during the Gold Rush. The family came to Oregon in the 1860s on the Applegate Trail with the Aaron Rose Party, settling in Douglas County.

Mr. Friend moved to the Rogue Valley in 1926 from Roseburg and graduated from Medford High School in 1931.

On Aug. 14, 1938, in Medford, he married Enid Ruie Ward, who survives.

During World War II, he contributed to the war effort working at Medco in the wood products industry.

Mr. Friend worked for Hubbard Bros. Ace Hardware for 33 years, managing the sporting goods department. He supplied sporting goods to stores at area lakes and along the Rogue River. He also sold appliances for 10 years with Trowbridge Electric.

In the 1930s and 1940s, he played saxophone at dances throughout Douglas, Josephine and Jackson counties and was a member of the local musicians union.

Mr. Friend was a charter member of the Rogue Valley CB Club and Rogue Snowmobilers Club, a member and past master of Eagle Point Grange, and was active in the Howard District No. 100 School Board, the old Medford School District's Citizens Advisory Committee, the Medford Gun Club, and the Medford Four Wheel Drive Club.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and sporting events.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Mary Friend Thomas, Eugene; a son, Harold, Portland; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers Dale and Charlie and an infant brother; and two sisters, Winnie Croucher and Alta Croucher.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Owen `Sully' Sullivan

The graveside service for Owen "Sully" Charles Sullivan will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Roseburg National Cemetery. The Rev. Kelly O'Sullivan will officiate.

Mr. Sullivan, 76, formerly of Jacksonville, died Saturday (March 21, 1998) at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Roseburg. His home was in Roseburg.

He was born April 22, 1921, in Cheyenne, Wyo.

On Oct. 31, 1948, in Dallas, Ga., he married Flora Bean, who survives.

The Sullivans lived in Jacksonville for 30 years before moving to Roseburg seven years ago.

Mr. Sullivan served in the U.S. Navy from 1939 to 1958.

He was a cook for Sears employees and counseled mentally challenged and troubled youth in Jackson County.

Mr. Sullivan was an avid reader and enjoyed joking with people.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Charlene Brussard, Jacksonville, and Sandy Shepherd, Elkton; three sons, Kelly O., Medford, Shawn L., Newberg, and Casey J., Middletown, Calif.; a sister, Colleen, Salinas, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

`Bun' Young

The funeral for LaVerne May "Bun" Young will be at 2 p.m. today at Perl Funeral Services-Siskiyou Chapel, Medford. The Rev. John Braund of Phoenix First Presbyterian Church will officiate.

Interment will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Mrs. Young, 69, of Medford, died Friday (March 20, 1998) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Jan. 11, 1929, in Alsea, and lived on a dairy farm until her family moved to Medford in 1936. She attended Lone Pine Elementary School and graduated from Medford Senior High School in 1946.

On Jan. 11, 1948, in Medford, she married Davis Miller "Pop" Young, who survives.

Mrs. Young began working for the Medford Water Commission in 1947. She retired in 1991 after 44 years.

She was past president of the Alpha Lambda Chapter No. 616 and was an active member of the Bear Creek Golf Club. With her husband, she was a member of the Rogue Valley Dressers Motorcycle Club. She also was an avid water skier.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a sister, Barbara Pixler, Anderson, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Alta Yocom; a brother, Robert Yocom; and a sister, Arlene Yocom.

Lucille Solt Smith

The memorial service for Lucille Solt Smith will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Medford First United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be in Siskiyou Memorial Park.

Mrs. Smith, 88, formerly of Medford, died Sunday (March 22, 1998) in Creswell. Her home was in Lorane.

Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 607 W. Main St., Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Lucille Solt on May 9, 1909, in Findlay, Ohio.

On June 6, 1941, in Reno, Nev., she married Lloyd Smith, who died in 1973.

Mrs. Smith lived in Medford from 1941 to 1993.

After graduating from normal school in Ohio, she was an elementary school teacher. Mrs. Smith taught home-bound students in Medford.

She was a member of the Medford First United Methodist Church and enjoyed church activities, sewing and reading.

Survivors include a daughter, Jeri Porter, Lorane; three sisters, Florence Cook and Mabel Dailey, both Findlay, and Helen Smith, Sacramento, Calif.; three brothers, Clarence Solt, Findlay, Elmer Solt, Akron, Ohio, and Wilbur Solt, Bowling Green, Ohio; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements: Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Home, Cottage Grove.

Bessie Leitha Oskar

The funeral for Bessie Leitha Oskar will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Central Valley Chapel, Central Point. Members of the Jehovah's Witnesses Congregation will officiate. Interment will be in Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mrs. Oskar, 85, of Gold Hill, died Saturday (March 21, 1998) at a foster care center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 33 N. Central Ave., Suite 330, Medford, OR 97501.

She was born June 20, 1912, in Hilt, Calif., a daughter of Archie and Eva Rametes.

On July 6, 1963, in Reno, Nev., she married John Oskar, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Oskar enjoyed cooking.

Survivors include a son, Gerald Jones, Gold Hill; a brother, Lorence "Buster" Rametes, Jacksonville; two sisters, Mabel Mackay, Talent, and Nellie Owen, Woodland, Wash.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Central Point Chapel.

Barbara `Annie' Wright

The memorial service for Barbara "Annie" JoAnn Wright will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, 1900 Crater Lake Ave., Medford. The ministerial staff of Applegate Christian Fellowship will officiate.

Mrs. Wright, 64, of Gold Hill, died Friday (March 20, 1998) at her home.

She was born July 16, 1933, in Gold Hill to LaRoy and Nona Centers.

On Jan. 18, 1960, in Yreka, Calif., she married Raymond "Ray" M. Wright, who survives.

Mrs. Wright was a member of the first graduating class of Crater High School in Central Point, where she was a cheerleader. She also was instrumental in selecting the school colors.

She was employed from 1956 to 1989 as a grocery checker at the Big Y Shopping Center in Medford. Until 1997 she worked at Shop-N-Kart in White City. She was a member of the Retail Clerks Union for more than 33 years.

Mrs. Wright enjoyed outdoor activities with her family, including fishing and morel mushroom hunting. She also enjoyed her pets and flower gardening.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include her mother, Nona Centers, Gold Hill; a son, Chip Wright, Central Point; two daughters, Cheryl Johnson, Medford, and Debbie Luttmer, Sweet Home; two sisters, Virginia Rivett, Sacramento, Calif., and Marcia Brotherton, Gold Hill; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father; a brother, Bill Centers; and a sister, Donna Hobson.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Dorothy R. Holberton

Dorothy R. Holberton, 98, of White City, died Saturday (March 21, 1998) at her home. A private service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Foster Grandparent Program, 1700 Barnett Road, Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Dorothy Ray on March 11, 1900, in Portland.

She grew up in Portland and in Frazier Valley, British Columbia.

Mrs. Holberton moved to the Rogue Valley in 1934 from Canada. She and her former husband, Terry, ran Hillcrest Orchards until 1940.

During World War II, she moved to Fort Lewis, Wash., working at the army base.

She lived in San Francisco for a time before returning to the Rogue Valley.

For several years, she worked at a women's clothing store, Adrian's Clothing, in Medford and managed the Jackson Hotel for a time until it closed.

In 1980, she became a foster grandparent in Sue Olsen's classroom at Hoover Elementary School, volunteering there until she was 96 years old. She received the KTVL TV Country Spirit Award in 1987.

She was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Jacksonville and enjoyed dogs, horses and playing cards. She also enjoyed watching skydiving and was instrumental in forming the Southern Oregon Sport Parachute Center.

Survivors include a son, George, Medford; a daughter, Nancy Elbert, Federal Way, Wash.; 13 grandchildren; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, William; and a daughter, Geraldine Welch.
