Burt Boyles
A private burial was held for Burt Elmer Boyles of Central Point at Skyline Memorial Park in Portland.
Mr. Boyles, 83, died Friday (April 3, 1998) at Providence Medford Medical Center.
He was born May 27, 1914, in Elmwood, Neb. He had been a federal employee in Portland before his retirement.
Among the survivors are a nephew, Howard L. Thomas of Hillsboro, and a niece, Jo Ann Thomas of Eagle Point.

Hugh Hartman
A memorial service for Hugh Oldham Hartman, a former Rogue River School District superintendent, is at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home in Grants Pass. The Rev. Robert Greathouse of Hope Presbyterian Church of Rogue River will officiate. A private burial will follow at Woodville Cemetery.
Mr. Hartman, 83, died Friday (April 3, 1998) at Fair View Transitional Health Center in Grants Pass.
He was born July 21, 1914, in Wynona, Okla., to William and Winifred Hartman. He graduated from high school in Rogue River and earned a teaching degree at what was then Southern Oregon Normal School. He was a catcher with the San Francisco Seals baseball team for three years.
He married Beatrice Maxine Miller, who survives him, on Nov. 10, 1934, in Ashland.
He was principal of the grade school and basketball coach at the high school before he became superintendent in Rogue River. He was schools superintendent in Redmond for 23 years, then returned to Rogue River as superintendent in 1970. He retired in 1976.
He attended the dedication of a middle school named in his honor in Redmond in 1996.
He was a member of Hope Presbyterian Church, the Redmond Kiwanis Club and the Lions. He was a basketball referee, track devotee, and enjoyed fishing and hunting. Children were his special interest.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Nancy Roberta Griffin of Stanfield, Ore.; a foster son, Blaine Freel of Salinas, Calif.; his brother, George William Hartman of Vallejo, Calif., six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A son, Dale Leonard Hartman, died in 1986.

Oran Marlow
A private family service was held for Oran H. Marlow, 77, who died Saturday (April 4, 1998) at his home in Shady Cove.
He was born Aug. 6, 1920, in Fort Wayne, Ind., to John and Marie Marlow. He married Emma Sprague, who survives him, on Dec. 23, 1941, in Toledo, Ohio.
He was in the Army in World War II.
He came to the Rogue Valley from California in 1963. He was a night watchman for Spalding and Son Lumber in Grants Pass before his retirement.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Steve Marlow of Medford; two daughters, Sandra Cicero of Springfield, and Bobbie Marlow of Oceanside, Calif., nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Dr. David C. Boals
The memorial service for Dr. David Cowell Boals will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ascension Lutheran Church. The Revs. Robert Larson and John Braund will officiate.
Dr. Boals, 76, of Medford, died Monday (March 30, 1998) at his home. He was Medford's first anesthesiologist.

He was born May 3, 1921, in Seattle.
He was a 1942 graduate of the University of Washington and a 1946 graduate of Northwest University Medical School.
He was a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II.
On Feb. 16, 1947, he married Ester Froberg, who died in November 1982. They moved to Medford in 1954.
From 1948 to 1954, he was a professor at the University of Oregon Medical School in Portland.
He had a private practice in Medford until retiring July 28, 1986.
He was on the board of the Rogue Valley Physicians Service 1966-1976, serving two years as president. For several years he ran the Tomlin Lecture Series of the American Cancer Society.
Dr. Boals was elected to the Medford School Board in 1962 and served for eight years, two of them as chairman.
He was an avid golfer and river boater.
Survivors include a daughter, Susan Burnett, Medford; two sons, David C. Jr., Medford, and John, Salem; and four grandchildren.

Clara Ditsworth
A funeral service for Clara Ditsworth is set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Conger-Morris Chapel in Medford. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mrs. Ditsworth, 93, of Medford, died Wednesday (April 1, 1998) at Medford Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
Sne was born Clara Forest on March 8, 1908, to Hattie and George Forest at home at their gold mine, near Sawyer's Bar, Calif.
In 1911, the family moved to a farm near Provolt, where she walked to school and later rode a horse to Applegate High School, where she graduated in 1923.
She completed a yearlong teacher's training program at Oregon Normal School in Monmouth, and began teaching in one-room schools in the upper Rogue River valley, a district now covered by Lost Creek Lake. She taught until 1926, when on Dec. 30 in Medford, she married Hobart Ditsworth.
She was a homemaker, active in the Elk Creek Grade School parent teacher organization, the Upper Rogue Home Extension Unit, 4-H and Scouts.
The couple retired to a farm in Madras in 1951 and farmed until 1954, when they returned to Medford. She was a dedicated volunteer to the OSU Extension, Red Cross, and what was then Rogue Valley Hospital.
She is survived by an older brother, Ashton, of Applegate; two sons, Sterling, of Las Vegas, and George, Puyallup, Wash.; three grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
Her husband Hobart, son Eugene, and a granddaughter Julie, died previously.
Leonard Modee
A graveside service for Leonard "JoJo" Arthur Modee is set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Eagle Point National Cemetery. The Masonic Lodge of Shady Cove with Brother Buzz Fish will officiate.

Mr. Modee, 70, of Eagle Point, died Thursday (April 2, 1998) at Seasons Foster Care Home in Medford.
He was born Dec. 8, 1927, in San Antonio, Texas, to Arthur and Irene Modee. On June 17, 1950, in Las Vegas, Nev., he married Doris Bell, who survives.
Mr. Modee served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean conflict.
He retired from Darigold Dairies in Medford in 1987. He had also worked for the Jorgensen and Mayflower Dairies, both in Medford.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Shady Cove and the Elks Lodge No. 1168 in Medford.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Steven Modee, Eugene, and Charles Modee, Coram, Mont.; one daughter, Susan Modee, Talent; one sister, Marguerite Eaton, Sun Valley, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

John Mikota
The funeral of John Edward Mikota of Medford is set for 1 p.m. Tuesday at Memory Garden Chapel in Medford. Visitation is from 9 a.m. to noon. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.
Mr. Mikota, 76, died Friday (April 3, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 27, 1920, in Columbia Falls, Mont. He was married to Aileen Dean, who survives him, on July 30, 1949, in Kennewick, Wash. He moved to the Rogue Valley from Asotin, Wash., in 1974.
He was a B-17 co-pilot in Germany and Italy in World War II.
He was employed for 25 years as an inspector for the Army Corps of Engineers and retired in 1985. He was a member of the Roxy Ann Rock and Gem Club, and a member of a horseshoe club in Phoenix. He enjoyed bicycle riding, golf ball hunting, golf and chauffeuring.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, Bryan Louis Mikota of Medford, Raymond Paul Mikota of Ashland, John Douglas Mikota of Kimberly, Idaho, and Michael Dean Mikota of Havre, Mont.; two daughters, Christine Marie Mikota of Medford and
Patricia Gay Hettick of Missoula, Mont., and five grandchildren. A brother, Louis, and sister, Helen, preceded him in death.

Clyde E. Thompson
The funeral for Clyde E. Thompson is set for 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Hull & Hull Chapel, Grants Pass. The Rev. Nolan Roby will officiate. Interment will follow in the Eagle Point National Cemetery.
Mr. Thompson, 71, of Grants Pass, died Friday (April 3, 1998) at Three Rivers Community Hospital.

He was born April 19, 1926, in Kellogg, Idaho. Mr. Thompson moved to Medford in 1942 from Montana.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Enterprise and was awarded a Presidential Citation.
In 1949, in Medford, he married Lucille Margaret Brittsan, who survives. They moved to Grants Pass in 1949 from Medford.
A banker for many years, Mr. Thompson founded Valley of the Rogue Bank and served as bank president until 1980. Later he was a mortgage broker for two years with Financial Options in Grants Pass.
Mr. Thompson was a member of the Apostolic Faith Church in Grants Pass and Gideons International. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Dwight D., Talent, and Jack A., Grants Pass; a sister, Shirley Bruneau, Panaca, Nev.; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald.
