Lewis Walker Caldwell

The graveside service for Lewis Walker Caldwell will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford. Pastor Dwayne Brown of the Central Point First Presbyterian Church will officiate.

Mr. Caldwell, 79, of Medford, died Saturday (April 4, 1998) in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 33 N. Central Ave., Suite 330, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born May 27, 1918, in Minneapolis, Kan.

Mr. Caldwell moved to the Rogue Valley in 1937 from Kansas.

On Sept. 28, 1940, in Phoenix, he married Wilma Nipper, who preceded him in death.

Mr. Caldwell was a finish carpenter for 30 years with the Art Dubs Co.

A member of the Carpenters Union Local 2067, he also was a master organic gardener.

Survivors include a daughter, Lori Bennett, Talent; a son, David, Medford; a brother, Edwin, Medford; a sister, Neva Marsh, Medford; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.

Olen Henry Barlow

The graveside service for Olen Henry Barlow will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Stearns Cemetery, Talent. The Rev. John Braund of First Presbyterian Church, Phoenix, of will officiate.

Mr. Barlow, 90, of Phoenix, died Saturday (April 4, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

He was born Nov. 18, 1907, on Wagner Creek, a son of William and Minnie Neal Barlow. The family homesteaded on Wagner Creek in the 1870s.

On Nov. 5, 1928, in Klamath Falls, he married Esther Miller, who died in 1995.

Mr. Barlow was a logging contractor for many years. With his brother, Orin, he gold mined on Arrastra Creek, a tributary of Wagner Creek south of Talent, for many years.

During World War II he was a diesel mechanic.

As a young man, Mr. Barlow played the violin at dances.

Known for his way with words, he enjoyed telling stories.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Donham, Phoenix; two sons, William, Central Point, and David, Medford; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Dorothy V. Knight

The memorial service for Dorothy Verbena Knight will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Perl Funeral Services-Siskiyou Chapel. Stan Johnson will officiate. Entombment will be in Tulocay Cemetery, Napa, Calif.

Mrs. Knight, 88, of Medford, died Saturday (April 4, 1998) at Three Fountains Nursing Center.

She was born Dorothy Verbena Barnett on April 24, 1909, in Santa Margarita, Calif.

On Aug. 29, 1931, she married Roy S. Knight, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Knight lived in Ukiah, Calif., for about five years and 53 years at Pritchard Hill in California's Napa Valley, where she was a licensed practical nurse for 17 years.

She moved to Medford in 1987.

Survivors include three sons, Jim, Medford, Robert, Napa, and Dan, Middletown, Calif.; two daughters, Alice Lippert and Rosemary Allin, both Medford; two sisters, Louise Hill and Mary Woodhurst, both Chehalis, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Walt R. Pickens

Walter "Walt" Randall Pickens, 83, of Talent, died Saturday (March 4, 1998) at the Medford Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center. A private service will be held Wednesday, with private interment in the Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, 4412 S.W. Barbur Blvd., Suite 220, Portland, OR 97201.

He was born Jan. 21, 1915, in Collingdale, Pa., and grew up in Southern California. The family moved to the Rogue Valley in 1932.

Mr. Pickens graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1933 and received a degree in engineering from Oregon State University in 1942.

On Nov. 30, 1946, in Shelton, Wash., he married Jo Needham, who survives.

In 1955, Mr. Pickens became a building inspector for the city of Pasadena, Calif., retiring in 1976 as the city's director of planning and building.

During World War II, he was a lieutenant (junior grade) in the U.S. Navy Civil Engineer Corps on Okinawa, attached to the a construction battalion (Seabees).

During his retirement, he was a self-employed general contractor in Southern California before returning to the Rogue Valley in 1988.

Mr. Pickens was active in Boy Scouts and Little League. He enjoyed golfing, water skiing, sailing, and RVing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Dr. Todd Pickens, Sutter Creek, Calif.; and a daughter, Marcia Randall, in Washington.

Harold Frye

A memorial service for Harold A. Frye Jr. is scheduled at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Eagle Point National Cemetery. The Rev. Emmitt Shortread of First United Methodist Church will officiate.

Mr. Frye, 85, died Wednesday (April 1, 1998) at Medford Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Leslie Robertson

A memorial service for Leslie B. Robertson of Medford, a retired business educator, is planned at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church, 1900 Crater Lake Ave., Medford. The graveside service is at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mr. Robertson, 88, died Saturday (April 4, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

He was born March 25, 1910, in Humansville, Mo., to John Jefferson and Nellie Mae Ayers Robertson. He married Minnie N. McDaniel, who survives him, on June 2, 1940, in Lawrence, Kan.

He began teaching in 1935 in Newburg, Mo., where he also was the basketball coach and high school principal. From 1936 to 1940, he headed business education at Blue Rapids High School in Kansas. He earned a master's degree from the University of Kansas in 1942.

He was in the Army in the South Pacific in World War II.

In 1948, he moved to Medford and became the first business education chairman at Medford Senior High School under Superintendent E.H. Hedrick. He resigned in 1954 to open Robertson School of Business in Medford. He purchased a business school in Roseburg in 1957, opened a school in Klamath Falls later that year, and all of them became Robertson Schools of Business. He sold the schools July 1, 1964, but stayed until the end of the year.

He was elected a director of the National Association and Council of Business Schools in 1958, representing private business schools in Oregon and Washington for three years.

He was appointed state supervisor of business education in 1965. He organized a secretarial science and business education program in 1966 at what was then Southern Oregon State College, and eventually returned to the classroom. While there, he became the first chairman of the Oregon Business Education Council, which was formed in 1968. He resigned from SOSC at the end of 1970.

His last job was at Clatsop Community College, where he taught from 1971 until his retirement in 1976.

He was a strong supporter of equality and equal pay in the workplace.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, American Association of Retired Persons, and life member of the Medford Elks. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, berry picking, camping in his recreational vehicle, and making cabinets.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Jewell Wood of Bonne Terre, Mo. A sister, Velma Wollard, died in 1993.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the University of Kansas endowment for the mathematics department and Watkins Hall women's scholarship, or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Leola Chambers

The funeral of Leola Ann "Grandma Jiggs" Chambers, a former school bus driver and Butte Falls City Council member, is at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Butte Falls Community Bible Church. Chaplain J.R. Baker will officiate and Steve Heady will give the historical memorial.

Burial will follow in Butte Falls Cemetery.

Family and friends are invited to gather afterward in Butte Falls Community Hall.

Mrs. Chambers, 79, died Friday (April 3, 1998) at her home in Butte Falls.

She was born Leola Ann Edmondson on March 15, 1919, in Butte Falls to Benjamin and Kizzie Edmondson. She married Raymond H. Chambers, who preceded her in death, on Aug. 28, 1945, in Medford. She lived in the Rogue Valley nearly all of her life.

She was the first woman certified as a school bus driver in Oregon and drove a bus from 1941 through the mid-1980s.

She was on the Butte Falls City Council in the 1970s. She was a member of the Upper Rogue Grange and took part in the Foster Grandparents Program.

She enjoyed baking pies, crocheting for family and friends, and the mountains.

Among the survivors are two daughters, Janice Chambers of Central Point and Judy Lewis of Grants Pass; a son, John R. Chambers of Cheney, Wash.; a sister, Lola M. Stegeall of Butte Falls; two grandsons, four granddaughters, and five great-great grandchildren.

Two brothers, Kenneth B. and Frank Edmondson, and two sisters, Veva Hendricks and Sylvia Edmondson, died before her.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Butte Falls Lions Club, P.O. Box 19, or the Butte Falls Scholarship Fund, 239 Main St., Butte Falls, OR 97522.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Care.

Terry Hughes

A graveside service is planned for Terry R. Hughes of Medford at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Memory Gardens Memorial Park. Pastor John Braund of Phoenix Presbyterian Church will officiate.

Miss Hughes, 51, died Friday (April 3, 1998) at her residence at the Beatty House.

She was born July 23, 1946, in Barron, Wis. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1968 from Toledo, Ore.

She participated in the Special Olympics, bowling and household duties at the Beatty House.

She is survived by four brothers and three sisters. A brother, D.F. Hughes, died before her.
