Billy Joe Pinheiro

The memorial service for Billy Joe Pinheiro will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at New Hope Ministries in Redding, Calif.

Mr. Pinheiro, 35, formerly of Medford, died Monday (April 20, 1998) in Redding. His home was in Redding.

He was born March 4, 1963, in Bakersfield, Calif.

Mr. Pinheiro worked in the construction industry.

After living most of his life in Medford, he moved to Redding four years ago.

Survivors include a daughter, Natasha Marie Pinheiro, Medford; a son, Austin Joseph Fathke-Pinheiro, Redding; two brothers, Calvin Ray and Melvin "Mike", both Medford; and four sisters, Linda Estrada and Georgina Pinheiro, both Medford, Melva Dunston, Central Point, and Sandra Miles, Gold Hill. He was preceded in death by his father, Jesse Pinheiro; his mother, Minnie Mabry; a sister, Starla Haney; and a brother, Johnny.

Arrangements: Lawncrest Chapel & Memorial Park, Redding.

Helen E. Gallap

The cryptside service for Helen E. Gallap will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Roseburg Memorial Gardens. Deacon Robert Jackson of St. George's Episcopal Church in Roseburg and officers of the Order of the Eastern Star, Roseburg, will officiate.

Mrs. Gallap, 96, of Central Point, died Thursday (April 16, 1998) at her home.

She was born Helen Emery on July 20, 1901, in Umpqua.

Mrs. Gallap moved to the Rogue Valley three years ago from Roseburg, where she was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church, the Women's Club of America, OES, Emblem Club, and the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary.

She volunteered at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Roseburg and enjoyed gardening, canning, baking and sewing.

Survivors include three granddaughters, including Debra Kay Miles, Central Point; 10 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; and a great-great-great-grandson. Her husband, Homer Gallap, died in 1979, and two daughters died: Judith Ann Boland in 1997 and Margaret Ann Wisner in 1983. A brother, Loal Emery; and a sister, Margaret Emery, also preceded her in death.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation & Funeral Care, Central Point.

Jose O. Lujan

Jose O. Lujan, 17, of Medford, died Saturday (April 18, 1998) at his home.

The graveside service will be at noon Friday in Jacksonville Cemetery.

Survivors include his parents, Jose and Rosa Lujan, Medford.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, Medford.

Raymond F. Cummings

Raymond F. Cummings, 79, of Rogue River, died Monday (April 20, 1998) at his home. No service is planned.

He was born April 17, 1919, in Ironton, Minn. Two years later, the family moved to Oregon from Minnesota.

Mr. Cummings graduated from Rogue River High School in 1938.

On July 29, 1939, in Reno, Nev., he married Esther Beck, who survives.

Mr. Cummings worked in logging and gold mining before serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Later, he owned and operated Ray Cummings Logging until his retirement.

Mr. Cummings was a 10-year member of the Grants Pass Elks Lodge before joining the Ashland lodge. He enjoyed fishing on the Oregon Coast.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Janice James, Rogue River; a son, Jerry, Washougal, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Hull & Hull Funeral Directors, Grants Pass.

Charles W. Steele

Charles W. Steele, 73, an Ashland activist and expert in electromagnetic field computations, died Friday (April 17, 1998) near Medford. A private service was held.

Memorial contributions may be made to Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), 1101 14th St. N.W., Suite 1030, Washington, DC 20005; or to Rogue Valley Monthly Meeting of Religious Society of Friends, P.O. Box 779, Ashland, OR 97520.

He was born Nov. 13, 1924, in Galesburg, Ill.

During World War II, he served as a radio technician in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Steele received master's degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois in 1950 and in computer science from Stanford University in 1967.

On April 22, 1957, he married Candace Dornblaser, who survives. They met while backpacking. They moved to Ashland in 1987 from Chanhassen, Minn.

Mr. Steele conducted pioneering research in the computation of electromagnetic fields, with applications to magnetic recording media. During his career of more than 35 years, he published numerous technical papers and wrote "Numerical Computation of Electric and Magnetic Fields," a reference for professionals and university instructors.

Dedicated to human rights, pacifism and conservation, Mr. Steele participated in PFLAG, Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), the Jackson County Human Rights Coalition, the American Friends Service Committee, the National Audubon Society and the Sierra Club, of which he was a life member.

He was an outspoken supporter of gay, lesbian and bisexual rights and testified before many local and state government committees, university forums, and service clubs.

He was a member of the Magnetic Society, Eta Kappa Nu, an honorary electrical engineering society, and a life member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.

Mr. Steele enjoyed woodworking, camping, and his cat, Mouse.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three daughters, Danae Steele, University Place, Wash., Heidi Steele, San Francisco, and Heather Steele, Santa Cruz, Calif.; and a grandchild.

Billy Skeeters Tingleaf

Billy Skeeters Tingleaf, 85, of Eagle Point, died Friday (April 17, 1998) at her home. She will be remembered at an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday at 73 Meridian Road, Eagle Point.

She was born Billy Ranney on Sept. 28, 1912, in Valier, Mont.

Mrs. Tingleaf lived most of her life in the Rogue Valley.

She built the Brownsboro Tavern, which she owned and operated for 10 years.

She was a cook at the Veterans Affairs Domiciliary for many years.

Mrs. Tingleaf was an avid mushroom picker and enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include a daughter, Dian Stowell, Las Vegas, Nev.; a sister, Ruby Jordan, New York City; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, William Joseph Skeeters; and a sister, Montana Gilhousen.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation & Funeral Care, Central Point.

Lewis O. Crone

Lewis O. Crone, 90, formerly of Medford, died Friday (April 17, 1998) in Tulare, Calif. His home was in Arcata, Calif. A private service is planned.

He was born April 24, 1907, in McAlester, Oklahoma Territory, and grew up in Oklahoma.

Mr. Crone was a lumber mill worker. While living in Medford from 1962 to 1966, he worked for Kogap Lumber.

During World War II, he was a sergeant in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Crone enjoyed the outdoors and gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Crone, Arcata; four sons, Billy "Butch" Edwards, Medford, Dale Edwards, White City, Donnie Crone, McKinleyville, Calif., and Ronnie Crone, Tulare; two daughters, Gloria Whitmire, Talent, and Frances Brown, Arcata; a sister, Myrtle Martin, McAlester; 26 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Hamilton Peers Lorentzen Funeral Service, Tulare.

`Jim' Wilson

Dr. Norris James "Jim" Wilson, formerly of the Rogue Valley, died at his Wilsonville home early Friday (April 17 1998). He was 74.

He was born on July 27, 1923, in Humboldt County, Iowa, to Ralph and Alma Wilson. He graduated from Belmond (Iowa) High School in 1940. He was in the U.S. Air Force from 1942 to 1945; he attained the rank of S/Sgt. Dr. Wilson was in England from 1944 to 1945 with the 93rd Bomb Group and was discharged in 1945.

On Sept. 29, 1945, in Portland he married to Lorraine J. Grande, who survives.

Dr. Wilson graduated from University of Iowa at Iowa City, Iowa, with a bachelor of arts degree in 1947 and an M.D. degree in 1951. His internship was at Emanuel Hospital in Portland from 1951 to 1952. His orthopedic residency was at the VA Hospital in Portland from 1952 to 1954 and the Children's Hospital in Seattle from 1955 to 1956.

He practiced orthopedic surgery in Medford at the Orthopedic and Fracture Clinic from 1956 to 1981. After his retirement, he served as Orthopedic Consultant at the VA Hospital at White City and Chief of Occupational Health for the N.W. Permanente until 1989. After that he worked as a private orthopedic consultant.

Dr. Wilson was a member of the Rotary Club, the Knights of Columbus and St. Cyril's Catholic Church in Wilsonville. Dr. Wilson was an emeritus member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, American College of Surgeons, Western Orthopedic Society, North Pacific Orthopedic Society, Jackson County Medical Society and Oregon Medical Society.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, John G. Wilson of Medford; two daughters, Mary M. Rock of Canby and Anne M. Wilson of Tigard; a brother, Dr. George A. Wilson of Forest City, Iowa; and two grandchildren, Kathleen "Katy" Marie Rock and Margaret "Megan" Anne Rock of Canby.

Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Cyril's Catholic Church in Wilsonville. Urn placement will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Canby Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Roy Lee Thompson

The memorial service for Roy Lee Thompson will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Medford. Pastor David Croy will officiate. Private interment was in Memory Gardens Memorial Park, Medford.

Mr. Thompson, 98, of Central Point, died Sunday (April 12, 1998) in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504 or Grace Christian School, 649 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Oct. 1, 1899, in Rockwell, Texas.

Mr. Thompson moved to the Rogue Valley 50 years ago from Bend.

In 1965, in Ashland, he married Anna Inez Sheperd, who survives.

Mr. Thompson was a carpenter for more than 50 years in the Rogue Valley.

He was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Union Local 2067, and the First Baptist Church of Medford. He enjoyed making walking sticks, aluminum can crafts, bottle collecting, and rock hounding.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Doris Cherry, Lucerne Valley, Calif.; two sons, Jerrel, Portland, and Roland, Anaheim Hills, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Oleta Watson and Dovie Stout, both Central Point; four stepsons, Alvin Sheperd and Gary Sheperd, both Medford, Jim Sheperd, Phoenix, and Gale Sheperd, Anchorage, Alaska; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters and five brothers.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.
