Emma `Kathy' Hargis
The life of Emma "Kathy" K. Hargis will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Monday in the Ashland Christian Center. Private interment will be in Scenic Hills Memorial Park.

Mrs. Hargis, 78, of Ashland, died Tuesday (May 12, 1998) in Gresham.

She was born Emma Smiley on July 16, 1919, in Olive Branch, Ill.
On Nov. 16, 1935, in Olive Branch, she married Ola R. Hargis, who preceded her in death.
In 1953 the couple moved to Ashland where Mrs. Hargis was a sales clerk at Fortmiller's. She later worked for Anderson's Pharmacy, and retired from BiMart in the 1980s.
After retiring she served on an Ashland election board.
She was a member of the Ashland Elks Lodge, Lady Elks, Ashland Business and Professional Women's Club, Beta Sigma Phi sorority, and the Ashland Christian Center.
Mrs. Hargis enjoyed cooking, sewing and gardening.
Survivors include a son, Daniel R., White City; two daughters, Jeannie Kimsey, Portland, and Lana Rinker, Dublin, Ga.; two sisters, Ida Evans, Warren, Mich., and Lavonna Bridges, Tamms, Ill.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great granddaughter.

Shirley R. Thomas
The memorial service for Shirley R. Thomas will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Perl Funeral Services-Siskiyou Chapel, Medford.
Mrs. Thomas, 61, of White City, died Wednesday (May 13, 1998) at Providence Medford Medical Center.
She was born Shirley R. Seargent on Jan. 15, 1937, in Idabell, Okla.
On March 20, 1959, in Ashland, she married Douglas M. Thomas, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1970 from Roseburg.
Mrs. Thomas enjoyed ceramics, salmon fishing and riding all-terrain vehicles.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sons, Tim, White City, and Doug Jr., Lake Havasu, Ariz.; a daughter, Kelly Emery, Central Point; a sister, Vicki Edwards, Casa Grande, Ariz.; and 11 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Shaun Moss; and a grandson.

L. Jane White
The memorial service for L. Jane White will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Medford. The Rev. David Close will officiate.
Mrs. White, 86, of Medford, died Wednesday (May 13, 1998) at her home.

She was born April 27, 1912, in Belle Fourche, S.D.
Mrs. White earned a law degree from George Washington University.
She was a contract officer for the U.S. Government.
Before moving to Medford in 1994 from Placerville, Calif., she lived in San Jose, Calif., and in San Antonio, Texas.
Mrs. White was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. She was a volunteer at hospitals and enjoyed playing bridge.
Survivors include two sons, Abbott F. Hayden, San Antonio, and Russell E. White, Portland; a daughter, Carol Grier, Portland; and 10 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, James S. Hayden, William Wood and Russell White.

Ronald W. Kostman
The memorial service for Ronald William Kostman will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the White City Christian Church. Pastor Lyle McCaw will officiate.
Mr. Kostman, 60, of Eagle Point, died Monday (May 11, 1998) in Eagle Point.
He was born Jan. 22, 1938, in Menomonie, Wis.
On Jan. 24, 1974, he married Doris E. Owens, who survives.
Mr. Kostman moved to Eagle Point in 1985 from Washington, where he was a truck driver.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Keely Duberry, Shady Cove, and Kia Kostman, Eagle Point; twin sons, Kevin and Kyle, both Eagle Point; his mother, Vernice, in Washington; two brothers, Allen and Dennis, in Washington; and a sister, Darlene, in Washington.

Jack Karan
The graveside service for Jack Karan will be at 9 a.m. today in the Eagle Point National Cemetery. Rabbi Marc Sirinsky of Temple Emek Shalom, Ashland, will officiate.
Mr. Karan, 85, of Medford, died Wednesday (May 13, 1998) at Count Your Blessings Foster Care Home.
He was born Sept. 12, 1912, in Vilna, Lithuania.
Mr. Karan was a retired postman.
He served several tours of duty with the Navy, the last ending in 1951.
Mr. Karan lived at Fountain Plaza for six years before entering the Count Your Blessings Foster Care Home.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge.
Survivors include a sister, Jessie Render, Orlando, Fla.; and five nieces and nephews. His wife, Ruth Karan, died in 1972.

Artro W. Swingle
The memorial service for Artro W. Swingle will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Shelburne, Vt., Methodist Church.
Mr. Swingle, 91, of formerly of Ashland, died Sunday (May 10, 1998) at his home in Shelburne.

He was born Jan. 5, 1907, in Ashland, a son of Frank and Louisa Mesner Swingle.
Mr. Swingle graduated from Ashland High School as valedictorian of his class and received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Oregon State College in 1929. At OSC he was elected to five honor societies, appointed cadet colonel of the field artillery
of the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) regiment, was high man on the varsity rifle team, and received several outstanding student awards.
Mr. Swingle joined the General Electric Co. at Schenectady, N.Y., in 1929.
In 1930, he married Ida E. Gosnell, who died in 1995.
In 1960, he was transferred to Burlington, Vt., retiring there as engineering section manager in 1970.
Mr. Swingle was named 1965 Vermont Engineer of the Year.
During World War II, he was a specialist in Navy ordinance fire control. He was an officer in both the Army and Navy Reserves.
In retirement, Mr. Swingle was a charter member and served as chairman of the Northwest Vermont Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) for many years.
He was a member of the Shelburne Methodist Church, and a deacon and elder as well as president and lay minister of the Union Street Christian Church in Schenectady.
His hobbies included working in his home shop, trout fishing, big game hunting, and outdoors photography. Interested in competitive shooting, he was a member of the Capital District Pistol League and Division Pistol Team in New York.
Survivors include three daughters, Ellen Haynes, Marian Swingle and Artice Swingle; five grandsons; and four great-grandchildren.

Anna Marie Sabina Bali
The memorial service for Anna Marie Sabina Jensen Bali will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the Zion Lutheran Church, Medford. Pastor Lou Schnider will officiate. Private interment will be in Siskiyou Memorial Park.

Arthur Ray Bailey
Arthur Ray Bailey, 58, of Central Point, died Monday (May 11, 1998) at Three Fountains Nursing Center, Medford. No service is planned.
He was born May 15, 1939, in Chicago.
On Dec. 27, 1958, in Chicago, he married Nancy Westall, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1973 from Long Beach, Calif.
Mr. Bailey served in the Navy from 1956 to 1976.
He was a boiler inspector in Oregon and Northern California.
Mr. Bailey was a member of the St. Paul Navy Club and enjoyed golfing.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Mark and Kevin, both Hillsboro, and Michael, Huntington Beach, Calif.; a daughter, Debra Bailey, Beaverton; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister.
