William Elliott Hastings
William Elliott Hastings, 50, of Medford, died Monday (June 15, 1998) in Azalea. No service is planned.

He was born Aug. 6, 1947, in Myrtle Creek.
Mr. Hastings lived most of his life in Medford and Wolf Creek.
On Dec. 24, 1994, in Medford, he married Cynthia Holstien, who survives.
Mr. Hastings was a truck driver in the Rogue Valley.
He attended the Azalea Community Church and enjoyed shooting and hunting.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Macie Hastings and Morgan Hastings, both Medford; a son, Jesse, Azalea; a stepdaughter, Amanda Sovereign, Medford; his mother, Ruth Bryson, Wolf Creek; two sisters, Patsy Smith, Glendale, and Shirley Yarbrough, Salyer, Calif., and a brother, Jim, Azalea. He was preceded in death by his father, John P. Hastings.

Judith Carolyn Matchett
Judith Carolyn Matchett, 58, of Medford, died Thursday (June 18, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center. A private service is planned.
She was born Judith May on May 7, 1940, in Clark County, Miss.
On June 10, 1966, in San Clemente, Calif., she married Stanley R. Matchett, who survives. The moved to the Rogue Valley in 1992 from Scotts Valley, Calif.
Mrs. Matchett enjoyed shopping.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sons, Michael, Yreka, Calif., and Rock, Kingsland, Ark.; a daughter, Shylene Falk, San Clemente, and three grandchildren. A brother preceded her in death.

Iolene Estella Smith
The memorial service for Iolene Estella Smith will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Aberdeen, Wash., Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Mrs. Smith, 82, formerly of Medford, died Monday (June 15, 1998) at the Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen. Her home was in Aberdeen.
She was born Iolene Morningstar on Oct. 6, 1915, in Drain, and graduated from Drain High School in 1928.
On April 17, 1938, in Roseburg, she married Robert Luther Smith, who died in 1984.
Mrs. Smith lived in Medford from 1948 to 1973 and in Coos Bay from 1974 to 1984.
A member of Jehovah's Witnesses, she enjoyed teaching people about the Bible, camping, sewing and pinochle.
Survivors include a daughter, Carol Thomas, Aberdeen; a brother, Gerford Morningstar, Medford; a sister, Jody Barrow, Davis, Calif., and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Lee Smith; a brother, Gerald Morningstar, and four sisters.

Mike J. Cartwright
The memorial service for Michael "Mike" J. Cartwright will be at 1 p.m. Sunday in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford. Pastor Jim Larson of the Rogue Valley Christian Church will officiate. Interment will be later in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Mr. Cartwright, 48, of Medford, died Wednesday (June 17, 1998) at Providence Medford Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 17, 1949, in Medford.
After graduating from Medford High School in 1967, he lived in Eugene for 10 years before returning to Medford.
Mr. Cartwright was a salesman at various car dealerships, a parts counterperson for Littrell Discount Auto Parts and a salesman at Larson's. At the time of his death he was a property manager.
He was a former member of the Springfield Elks Lodge and enjoyed stock car and auto racing, camping, and hiking.
Survivors include his companion, Vicki Rosette, Medford; a daughter, Lindsey Cartwright, Central Point; his mother, Betty Cartwright, Medford; a sister, Jackie Lawrence, Medford, and a brother, Jeff, Blackfoot, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his father, Claude Cartwright.

Paul E. Francis
The memorial service for the Rev. Paul Edward Francis, retired Presbyterian minister, will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First Presbyterian Church, Ashland. A reception will follow in the church's fellowship hall. Private interment will be in Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland.
Mr. Francis, 86, formerly of Ashland, died Monday (June 15, 1998) at the Plum Ridge Care Center, Klamath Falls.
He was born May 8, 1912, in Titusville, Pa.
On Oct. 21, 1939, in Meadville, Pa., he married Jean Zilhaver, who survives. They moved to Ashland in 1976.
Mr. Francis attended the College of Wooster and graduated from Allegheny College, Meadville, in 1944, and from McCormick Seminary, Chicago, in 1947.
While at seminary he was pastor of the Ashmore, Ill., Presbyterian Church.
After his ordination in 1947, he served Presbyterian churches in Paris, Ill.; Clarksburg, W.Va.; and Macalester Plymouth United Church in St. Paul, Minn. He concluded his service as interim professor of homiletics at the Dubuque, Iowa, Seminary.
Mr. Francis served on the General Assembly's Judicial Commission and in 1957 was awarded a doctor of divinity degree by Davis & Elkins College.
After retiring to Ashland in 1976, Mr. Francis moderated Ecumenical Ministries of Ashland, served as interim pastor of Congregational Church of Ashland, Westminster Presbyterian Church in Medford, and First Presbyterian Church of Ashland, and preached at many of Protestant churches in the area.
An active Rotarian, he also was a member of the boards of Rogue Valley Symphony and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four daughters, Polly Francis, Klamath Falls, Judith Francis, Gresham, Rebecca Smith, West Linn, and Anne Smith, Fairfax, Calif.; a sister, Helen Robertson, Indianapolis, Ind.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.

Shirley Elaine Hulse
Shirley Elaine Hulse, 72, of Gold Hill, died Monday (June 15, 1998) at her home. A private service is planned. Inurnment will be in the Eagle Point National Cemetery.
She was born Shirley Harris on March 3, 1926, in Huttig, Ark.
On Dec. 11, 1971, in Basin, Wyo., she married Millard "Pete" Hulse, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Hulse owned and operated the Teton Shop in Idaho Falls, Idaho, making and selling ski apparel.
She lived in the Rogue Valley off and on for the past 45 years.
Mrs. Hulse enjoyed knitting and reading.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Strain, Medford, and Sharon Jensen, Sacramento, Calif.; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson. A brother and a sister preceded her in death.

James D. Davidson
The memorial service for James Denver Davidson will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Eagle Point National Cemetery. Pastor Jeff Newman of the Grants Pass Calvary Church will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Eagle Point National Cemetery.
Mr. Davidson, 74, of Ashland, died Thursday (June 11, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 26, 1923, in Springfield, Mo.
Mr. Davidson was an FBI agent for 20 years. Later he worked in the State of Texas Governor's Office in planning and administration.
Earlier, Mr. Davidson was a professional minor league baseball umpire and coached the Atlanta Braves' minor league team.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne.
He was a member of the U.S. Amateur Ballroom Dance Association.
Survivors include a daughter, Jill Mazza, Grants Pass; a son, Judson, Austin, Texas; and five grandchildren.

Royce R. McManama
The graveside service for Royce Ronald McManama will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Eagle Point National Cemetery. Pastor Rick Vestnys of the Applegate Christian Fellowship will officiate.
Mr. McManama, 57, of Shady Cove, died Tuesday (June 16, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 1, 1941, in Sweethome.
On June 30, 1962, in Weott, Calif., he married Sharon Mitchell, who survives.
Mr. McManama was a barber in Fortuna, Calif. He moved to the Rogue Valley 11 years ago from Brookings, where he owned and operated the Brookings Paint and Floorcovering Store.
In Medford, he owned and operated Gordon Trucking Inc. before buying the Cascade Gorge Restaurant and Lounge in Prospect in April 1997. He sold the restaurant one year later.
Mr. McManama served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1962.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Terri Westensee, Medford, and Cendi Gilman, Plano, Texas; his mother, Erma McManama, Redmond; a brother, Larry, Bend; a sister, Donna Wells, Santa Rosa, Calif.; and six grandchildren.
