Frank C. Preston Jr.

Frank Carlton Preston Jr., 84, of Jacksonville, died Wednesday (June 17, 1998) at the Medford Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center. A private service is planned. Inurnment will be in Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Jacksonville Woodlands Association, P.O. Box 1210, Jacksonville, OR 97530.

He was born May 2, 1914, in Sacred Heart Hospital in Medford, a son of Frank C. and Jeanette Preston.

Mr. Preston grew up on his father's cattle ranch in the Applegate Valley.

He attended Tamalpais School in San Rafael, Calif., and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and Wharton School of Finance.

On March 5, 1966, in Jacksonville, he married Ruth Bowne Walker, who survives.

Mr. Preston was a retired U.S. Army captain.

He worked for Westinghouse Electric before returning to the Rogue Valley to run his father's cattle ranch.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Margo Preston Vannelli, San Francisco, and Suzanne Frances Day, San Mateo, Calif.; and a grandson.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Services-Siskiyou, Medford.

Michelle L. Smith

Michelle Larraine Smith, 26, of Medford, died Tuesday (June 16, 1998) at her home. A private service has been held. Interment was in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

She was born June 5, 1972, in Sacramento, Calif. The family moved to the Rogue Valley 12 years ago.

Survivors include three sons, Devin Bauer and Derick Bauer, both Eagle Point, and Ricky Ray Cardoza, Medford; her parents, Debbie Crouse, Medford, and David Smith, Lake Isabella, Calif.; a brother, Jacob Smith, Livermore, Calif.; and a grandmother, Mary Smith, Lake Isabella. A grandmother and two grandfathers preceded her in death.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Jenny Wiege

The memorial service for Jennifer "Jenny" Leigh Wiege will be at 5 p.m. Monday in the Bear Creek Amphitheater, Medford. Pastors Denny Stahl of Applegate Christian Fellowship and Margaret Stevens of Center for Positive Living, Ashland, will officiate.

Miss Wiege, 20, of Central Point, died Thursday (June 18, 1998) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 425 S.E. 11th St., Portland, OR 97217.

She was born May 10, 1978, in Medford.

A student at Rogue Community College, Miss Wiege attended Aplegate Christian Fellowship and the Center for Positive Living, Ashland.

She enjoyed writing stories and poetry, photography, and making jewelry.

Survivors include her mother, Jill Redmond, Ashland; her father, John Wiege, Central Point; a brother, Mathew Wiege, Central Point; and grandparents, Inez Glines, Phoenix, and Don and Shirley House, McCloud, Calif.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary.

Gordon T. Brown

Gordon T. Brown, 65, of Gold Hill, died Thursday (June 18, 1998) at his home. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501 or Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Hospice, 2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born March 30, 1933, in LaPorte, Ind.

On May 17, 1952, in Three Oaks, Mich., he married Grace Wellinski, who survives. They moved to Gold Hill in 1980 from Las Vegas, Nev.

Mr. Brown had worked in auto parts since 1952. He retired from Lithia Toyota's auto parts department in 1995.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Deborah Curphey-Beeson, Medford; his mother, Jessie Ekstrom, Rogue River; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements: Lundbergs's L.B. Hall Funeral Home, Grants Pass.

Mildred Fern Miller

The memorial service for Mildred Fern Miller will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Memory Gardens Mortuary Chapel, Medford. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Mrs. Miller, 85, of Medford, died Wednesday (June 17, 1998) at Three Fountains Nursing Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Home Care, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Mildred Williams on Sept. 29, 1912, in Casper, Wyo.

In 1934, she married Delbert G. Miller, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Miller moved from Idaho to the Rogue Valley, where she lived most of her life.

She was a rancher in the Applegate Valley.

Mrs. Miller was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Jacksonville, Toastmistress, Home Extension and the Upper Applegate Grange. Her hobbies included crafts, cooking and gardening.

Survivors include a son, Terrance, Medford; two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, three brothers and two sisters.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary.

Bessi Margaret Hanzic

Funeral Mass will be celebrated for Bessi Margaret Hanzic at 8 a.m. Monday in Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, Ashland. The Rev. Brendon McAnerney will officiate. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

Mrs. Hanzic, 78, of Ashland, died Wednesday (June 17, 1998) at the Ashland Community Hospital.

She was born Bessi Kosanovich on June 19, 1919, in Zagreb, Croatia.

In April 1946, in Zagreb, she married Michael Ludwig Hanzic, who survives.

They moved to San Jose, Calif., in 1962 from Toronto, Ontario, and came to Ashland in 1982.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Walter George VonFinck, Ashland; two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Friends may pay their respects from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Barbara Doolen Kurpieski

The memorial service for Barbara Kurpieski will held July 25 in Ashland.

Mrs. Kurpieski, 83, of Ashland, died Tuesday (June 16, 1998) of cancer in Salem.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Hospice, 2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford, OR 97504 or Britt Music Festivals, P.O. Box 1124, Medford, OR 97501.

She was born April 12, 1915, in Clarendon, Texas.

In 1944, she and her husband, Horace Marion Doolen, moved to Medford with their family. She taught piano for a number of years.

Following Mr. Doolen's death in 1956, she returned to college, earning a degree in education at Southern Oregon College. She taught music, art and penmanship at Wilson Elementary School for 17 years.

In 1974, she married Joseph Z. Kurpieski, who survives. They moved to Redwood City, Calif., then to Ashland in 1982.

Mrs. Kurpieski served on the Oregon Teachers Standards and Practices Commission.

She was active in the Oregon Retired Educators Association, American Association of University Women, the Medford First Methodist Church and later the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Church in Ashland. She also enjoyed traveling.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, SueDonna Doolen, Corvallis, Rosemary Wood, Salem, and Margaret Doolen, Portland; a son, David Doolen, Anchorage, Alaska; a stepdaughter, Kathrin Marshall, Norfolk, Mass.; two stepsons, Joseph Z. Kurpieski Jr., and Daniel Kurpieski, both Garden Valley, Calif., and nine grandchildren.

Arrangements: Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service, Salem.
