Howell Henry Cook

The graveside service for Howell Henry Cook will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland.

Mr. Cook, 86, of Central Point, formerly of Ashland, died Monday (June 22, 1998) at Ashland Community Hospital.

He was born Aug. 3, 1911, in Pacific City, Wash., and grew up in California.

On May 19, 1946, in Martin, N.D., he married Lydia Goll, who died in 1993.

Mr. Cook operated a dairy in Burney, Calif., before moving to Ashland in 1945, where he was a lumber grader.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Turner, Central Point; a brother, Elbert W., Redding, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Friends may pay their respects from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Roger Duane Simpson

Roger Duane Simpson, 67, of Eagle Point, died Tuesday (June 23, 1998) at his home. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans, Ed Mazza, 120 Tenney Drive, Rogue River, OR 97537.

He was born Nov. 9, 1930, in Abingdon, Ill. In 1952 he moved to Oregon from Illinois.

Mr. Simpson served in the U.S. Navy.

On April 1, 1977, in Eagle Point, he married Dorothy Craven, who survives.

Mr. Simpson was a retired road construction pipe layer.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a stepdaughter, Katy Lovitt, St. Augustine, Ill.; a stepson, Robert Haynes, Abingdon; five brothers, Jerry, Ed, Terry and Gene, all of Abingdon, and Bill, Vancouver, Wash.; five sisters, Cleta Boydstun, Carmen Thrasher, Carol Lewis, Joyce Fishel, and Juanita Quinn, all of Abingdon; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral.

Ethel Marjorie Axtell

The memorial service for Ethel Marjorie Axtell will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Lundberg's L.B. Hall Funeral Home, Grants Pass. Pastor Steve Parker of Bethany Presbyterian Church will officiate.

Mrs. Axtell, 94, of Grants Pass, died Friday (June 19, 1998) at Hearthstone in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bethany Presbyterian Church, 748 W. Fifth St., Grants Pass, OR 97526.

She was born Ethel Thomson on March 31, 1904, in Toronto, Ontario.

On June 20, 1925, in Toronto, she married John Thomason, who died in October 1946. They lived in Detroit and Eugene.

She moved to Portland in 1948, where she worked for J.C. Penney Co. until retiring in 1965.

In 1951, she married Chester F. Axtell, who died in 1956.

Mrs. Axtell moved to Grants Pass in 1975.

She was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church and was a Pink Lady at Josephine Memorial Hospital for many years.

Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie Bartle, Grants Pass, and Dody Hart, Medford; two sisters, Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Thompson, both Toronto; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Lundberg's L.B. Hall Funeral Home, Grants Pass.

Edward John Burleigh

Edward John Burleigh, formerly of Medford and Eagle Point, died Sunday (June 21, 1998) in Barstow, Calif., where he was living. A private service is planned. Interment will be in the Riverside, Calif., National Cemetery.

He was born Oct. 30, 1922, in Glendale, Calif.

Mr. Burleigh, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps, was at Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941, and served in the South Pacific throughout the war.

Mr. Burleigh was a member of the Laborers Union in Oregon and California.

He helped build Lloyd Center and the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Rogue Valley Manor in Medford and the University of California buildings at Davis and various government projects, after moving to Sacramento.

In the 1980s, he moved to Eagle Point where he raised exotic birds. Later he retired to Barstow.

Survivors include a daughter, Desiree M. Grisham, Eagle Point; seven sons, Danny L., Eddie R., and Jimmy W., all White City, Robin L. Gardner and Steven G., both Pahrump, Nev.; Val H., Armagosa, Nev., and Tommy D., Gunnison, Utah; a sister, Marian R. Kleeman, Milwaukie; a brother, George "Joe" B., Shafter, Calif.; 25 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant son, two grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.

Arrangements: Mead Mortuary, Barstow.

Harold Alfred Black

The memorial service for Harold Alfred Black will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Newman United Methodist Church, Grants Pass. Pastor Karen E. Crooch will officiate. Inurnment will be in Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.

Mr. Black, 90, of Grants Pass, died Monday (June 22, 1998) at Highland House & Rehabilitation Center.

He was born May 4, 1908, in Colchester, Ill. Four years later, the family moved to a homestead in Ryegate, Mont., where he completed high school. In 1925, they moved to Gallatin Valley in Montana.

Mr. Black graduated from Montana State College in 1930 with a degree in electrical engineering.

On Aug. 6, 1930, he married Lillian Belle Meyers, who died Sept. 6, 1997.

Mr. Black was a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) foreman for the U.S. Forest Service from 1933 to 1935, when he transferred to the Corps of Engineers at Fort Peck, Mont. In 1939 he transferred to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in Denver, Colo., and in 1942 left to help design facilities at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal. He later was chief of electrical maintenance with the U.S. Chemical Warfare Service.

Mr. Black returned to the BR until becoming a missile design engineer for Chrysler Corp., Missile Division, in 1953. From 1960 to 1964, he was a design specialist for the Martin Co. of Denver. He retired from the BR in Montrose, Colo., in 1977.

In Montrose, he was a city councilman and a deputy mayor.

He moved to Medford in 1988 and to Grants Pass in 1998.

Mr. Black was a member of the American Institute of Electronic Engineering Society, the Montrose United Methodist Church, Montrose Elks Lodge and the Grants Pass Moose Lodge. A life member of the Montrose Masonic York Rite and Scottish Rite 32nd degree Mason in Medford, he was a past worthy patron of the Order of the Eastern Star.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening and playing bridge.

Survivors include two sons, Warren, Grants Pass, and Hugh, St. Joseph, Mich.; a daughter, Ruth Young, Boise, Idaho; two brothers, Orville and Lyle; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Friends may pay their respects from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Siskiyou Memorial Chapel, Medford.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Services.

Warren Calvin Mullen

The memorial service for Warren Calvin Mullen will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Medford First Church of God. Pastor Sharon Bessler will officiate. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Mr. Mullen, 77, of Medford, died Monday (June 22, 1998) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Church of God, 2000 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Nov. 20, 1920, in Winona, Kan., and moved to the Rogue Valley in 1936 from Kansas.

After graduating from Medford High School in 1938, Mr. Mullen attended Moler Barber College in Portland.

Mr. Mullen was a barber at the Medford Hotel in the 1940s and at Camp White during World War II.

As a young man he played with the Eve Prentice Accordion Band and studied with Sebastian Appollo.

Survivors include a sister, Merna Faye Schaffer, Medford; and a brother, Robert Leland, Hamilton, Mont. A brother, Albert, died in 1938.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Lawrence Whitehead

Lawrence Dean Whitehead, 77, of Medford, died Monday (June 22, 1998) in Medford. A private service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Hospice, 2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford, OR 97504.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.

Robert James Martin

Robert James Martin, 84, formerly of Central Point and Medford, died Monday (June 15, 1998) in Albany. A private service was held.

He was born Jan. 19, 1914, in Minneapolis, Minn., where he grew up.

After high school he was a tanker truck driver for Pure Oil Co.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater, mostly in Guam. He then returned to tanker truck driving.

In May 1946, in Watertown, S.D., he married Maxine Burelson, who survives. They moved to Central Point in 1954 from Minneapolis, living there and in Medford until 1977.

He was a supervisor at the Arms Plant in Northfield, Minn., and a mill worker in Myrtle Creek, before joining Trowbridge & Flynn Electric Co.'s sales department in Medford. He later was in appliance sales at the Big Y Shopping Center, then managed an apartment complex in Medford until being hired by Northwest Natural Gas in 1967, from which he retired in 1977. They moved to Tangent in 1991.

Mr. Martin enjoyed yard work, woodworking, politics and sports.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Tari Lee Morse, Corvallis; a son, Bradley M., Grand Canyon, Ariz.; a sister, Shirley Gunderson, Minneapolis; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gordon and Russell.

Arrangements: Aasum Funeral Home, Albany.
