Irene Laird
Irene Laird, 86, of Ashland, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003 at her home. Arrangements are by Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.
Edwin H. Singmaster
Edwin H. "Ed" Singmaster of Ashland died Saturday, November 29, 2003. He was 92.
He was born in Santa Rosa, Calif., on July 26, 1911, to Henry L. and Stella Brand Singmaster and often shared fond memories of harvesting apples and pears in his youth. He graduated from Acalanes High School in Sebastopol, Calif., in 1929. He moved to San Francisco in 1935 where he began his insurance career with Swett & Crawford Insurance Agency. He married Clara May Pace on Feb. 24, 1940, in San Francisco. Shortly after, he was transferred to Portland. In 1946, the family moved to Ashland where Ed became an independent insurance agent. In 1972, he sold Singmaster Insurance Agency and retired. He always felt a strong civic duty and volunteered his time by serving on many community boards including: Ashland Chamber of Commerce President 1948, Ashland Rotary Club member and president, Jackson County Republican Central Committee Chairman, Jackson County Budget Committee Chairman, Ashland School Board. Board of Directors: Rogue Valley Manor, Ashland Community Hospital (Endowment) Foundation, Ashland Library Board, Jackson County Federal Savings and Loan, Mt. Ashland Corporation. Member of: Oregon Association of Insurance Agents, Jackson County Board of Equalization, Oregon Shakespearean Festival Association, Southern Oregon College Foundation, Rouge Valley Country Club, Service Core of Retired Executives (SCORE), Masonic Lodge, Shriners, and the Elks Club. National Republican Presidential Delegate.
He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, playing cards and spending time with his family and friends. Ed is survived by his son, Hank, of Ashland; daughter, Carol Moore of Coos Bay; and granddaughter, Amanda Schulze of Eugene. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Clara in 1977, and a grandson, Curtis McBee. Services will be held at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland on Thursday, Dec. 4, at 11 a.m. The family invites you to a gathering of friends at Ashland Elks Lodge No. 944 from 12:30 to 3 p.m.Thursday. Verna A. Carkhuff
The memorial service for Verna A. Carkhuff will be at 1 p.m., Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, 1811 Ashland St., Ashland. Pastor Jim Larsen of Christian Church of Ashland will officiate. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at Lawncrest Memorial Park in Redding, Calif.
Mrs. Carkhuff, 84, of Phoenix, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at her residence.
She was born May 9, 1919, at Long Pine, Neb. In 1950, she married Fred Warnecke, who preceded her in death in 1973. She married Eugene Carkhuff in 1973. Mr. Carkhuff died in 1994.
Survivors include her brother, Carl Haberthur of San Leandro, Calif.; son-in-law Albert Doelker of Palo Cedro, Calif.; grandchildren Debbie McKey of Phoenix, Albert Doelker Jr., of Hillsboro and Cindee Slater of Rancho Murieta, Calif.; five great-grandchildren; and three great-great-granchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albin and Maude (Roberts) Haberthur, a daughter, Helen Doelker, and three sisters, Violet Dorsey, Cecil Smith and Shirley Tuengel.
Lloyd George Rogers
The memorial service for Lloyd George Rogers will be at 7 p.m., Saturday, December 6, 2003, at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland, with Pastor Jim Larsen of Christian Church of Ashland officiating. Private inurnment will be in Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland.

Mr. Rogers, 89, formerly of Ashland, died Monday, December 1, 2003, at his Medford residence.
Lloyd G. Rogers was born June 3, 1914, in Spirit Lake, Idaho, to Corance and Emily (Jobes) Rogers. He graduated from high school in Alturas, Calif., and on March 25, 1940, in Reno, Nev., he married the former Lois B. Smith. They came to Ashland in 1940 and Lloyd drove a taxi, worked at the Ashland Hotel, Mountain States Music Company, Fruit Growers Association and several lumber mills in Medford, Ashland and Hilt, Calif., including Magnolia Lumber Company and Timber Products. He retired in 1979 from Timber Products.
Lloyd enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing. He played a bass fiddle and square danced. He also enjoyed reading and watching movies.
Lloyd was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Lords and Ladies Square Dance Club.
Survivors include sons, Larry Rogers of Ashland and Lonnie Rogers of Sacramento; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. His wife, Lois, preceded him in death October 11, 1998. His brother, Almus, and sisters, Ethel and Bernice also preceded him in death.
Nicholas "Trent" Voris
A celebration of life will be held for Nicholas "Trent" Voris on Saturday, December 6, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the upper picnic area of Lithia Park.
The rain location is the Gazebo by the Lithia Park Bandshell.
Nicholas was born September 2, 1982, in Ashland. He died November 27, 2003, in Medford, at the age of 21.
Nicholas graduated from Grants Pass High School in 2001. While in high school, he was in the stage band and the marching band as a drummer and on the speed skating team for several years at Roller Odyssey in Medford. Skating and music were Nicholas' loves - he was on the Jr. Olympic Hockey Team when he was 9 through 12 years old. Some of his favorite music groups were Tool and The Who, however, he liked classical as well as other types of music.
Nicholas is survived by his father, Randy Voris and his mother, Rebecca Pinnock, both of Ashland; his sister, Angela Badiei of Albany; two grandmothers, Mary Elizabeth Voris and Betty Pinnock, both of Ashland; an aunt, Lyn Conklin of Medford; an uncle, Robert L. Voris of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; and an uncle, Jeff Pinnock of Spokane, Wash. He is preceded in death by his grandfathers, Robert Voris Sr. and Frank Pinnock.

Otis L. Manwarren
Otis L. Manwarren, 90, of Ashland, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford. Arrangements are by Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Ashland.
Suzanne Langley
Suzanne Langley, beloved mother and grandmother, died Thursday, December 11, 2003 at her residence in Ashland, surrounded by loved ones. She was 74 years old. Born Suzanne Isabelle Healy on July 3, 1929, in Brooklyn, New York to George Healy and Isabelle Calhoun Healy, Sue received her undergraduate degree at Trinity College and her masters degree in education at Columbia University. While attending Trinity, she was introduced to her future husband, George Langley, by her soon to be sister-in-law, Mary Jane. They were married in 1954, and raised their family together in Syracuse, New York and Santa Clara County, California. Sue was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brother, Robert Healy; she is survived by her sister, Joan Healy Calame, and her four daughters: Deborah Langley and Carol Langley of Medford; Joan Langley and her family, Peter, Michael, Jack and Christopher Buckley of Ashland; and Janet Langley of San Diego. A funeral mass will take place at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church on Tuesday, December 16 at 2 p.m., and a graveside service will be offered at the Oak Hill Cemetery in San Jose, California on Thursday, December 18 at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Sue's name to ARC of Jackson County.
James Walter Starkey
James Walter Starkey, 84, died December 1, 2003, in Des Moines, Washington.
James was born April 3, 1919 in Tonopah, Nevada to James Walter and Lucy Wilkins Starkey. When both died, he was raised by his aunt, Malvina Starkey, of Montrose, California. During WWII, he was a flight instructor for the Army Air Corps. His aviation career spanned five decades as a pilot flying in the areas of commercial, Alaska bush, and general aviation. Before his retirement, he was employed by KOGAP Plywood Co. of Medford.
Besides his love of flying, Jim enjoyed building homes and finish carpentry. He was an active member of the Medford hangar of the Quiet Birdmen, and a third degree Mason.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mabel Harriet Hodge Starkey; children, Paul Starkey and wife Patty of Bedford, Texas, Peter and wife Julie of Seattle, John and wife Cheryl of Burien; sister, Esther Lee Loyola Lindskog of Oregon; and grandchildren, Austin and Laura.
Elizabeth Hall Patch
Betty Patch, 84, of Monroe, Washington, went to be with the Lord on November 22, 2003.
She was born in San Francisco on November 19, 1919, and was raised on the Little Applegate.
Mrs. Patch was a retired nurse and spent her time crocheting, gardening, quilting, and was especially fond of sports.
She leaves behind her children Buffy Hurd, Mary Hill, Pam Hernandez, Paula Chapman, Karen Ann Dalbec, Cindy Cook and Dan Patch, Jr., and was preceded in death by her daughter Rosie Arnett. She was a grandmother, great grandmother and a great-great grandmother to 60 grandchildren and was affectionately known as "Grandma B" to them and her many foster children.
A memorial service will be held at the Royal Mobile Estates Clubhouse, 1055 N Fifth St, Jacksonville, on December 27 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Graveside services for family and close friends will be held at Jacksonville Cemetery at noon on Dec. 27.
