Claude E. Cheney

Claude Elsworth Cheney, 95, of Medford, died Wednesday (July 22, 1998) at his home. The memorial service and interment will be in Dayton Memorial Park in Dayton, Ohio.

He was born May 18, 1903, in Lima, Ohio.

On Oct. 20, 1924, he married Merle Frances Miller, who died in 1972.

Mr. Cheney moved to Central Point in 1990 from Lomita, Calif.

He enjoyed his numerous collections.

Survivors include four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A daughter, Marilyn Evenson, preceded him in death.

David Ebin Gruver

The memorial service for David Ebin Gruver will be at 6 p.m. Sunday in the Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall, Grants Pass. Dave McKinney will officiate.

Mr. Gruver, 57, of Grants Pass, died Thursday (July 23, 1998) at Three Rivers Community Hospital.

He was born Jan. 30, 1941, in Emmetsburg, Iowa.

In 1945, the family moved to Phoenix, Ariz., where he met his grade school sweetheart, Carol Ann Fleenor. They were married in Phoenix on Sept. 22, 1958, and moved to Rogue River in 1963. They settled in Grants Pass in 1985.

Mr. Gruver worked for Lippert's Carpet for several years. His business ventures included A-1 Carpet Service, D.E. Gruver Construction, Quality Homes and Liberty Information Service.

He worked on several projects for the Bureau of Land Management from 1979 to 1988, when he retired due to disability.

Mr. Gruver invented Gruver's swing handle speed wrench.

He attended the North Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses and enjoyed the outdoors, working with his hands and collecting miniatures.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four daughters, Marie Woodward, Sarah Gruver, Brenda Kuhs and Susan Obrymski, all Grants Pass; a son, David Glenn Gruver, Washougal, Wash.; his mother, Lena Stevens, Emmetsburg; five brothers, Haley, Orlando, Fla., Raymond, Comanche, Iowa, Henry, Woodbine, Iowa, and James and Gerald, both Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Caroline Moore, Payson, Ariz.; and nine grandchildren.

Arrangements: Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home, Grants Pass.

Elizabeth Mary McGrail

Elizabeth Mary McGrail, 92, of Central Point, died July 6, 1998, at her home. A memorial service will be held later.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

She was born June 10, 1906, in Centralia, Wash.

Ms. McGrail was an elementary school teacher in California schools for 50 years, retiring in 1978.

She moved to the Rogue Valley five years ago from Glendale, Calif.

Ms. McGrail was a member of Shepherd of the Valley Catholic Church in Central Point.

Survivors include three nieces, Diane E. Roberts, Medford, Irene M. Driver, Parker, Colo., and Mae Lynn Zimmer, Las Vegas. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and Ozzie McGrail.

Rodney C. Buck

Rodney C. Buck, 52, of Medford, died Sunday (July 19, 1998) at Providence Medford Medical Center. A private service is planned.

He was born July 31, 1945, in Baltimore, Md.

Mr. Buck served in the U.S. Navy as a medic during the Vietnam War.

He moved to the Rogue Valley six years ago from Huntington Beach, Calif.

Mr. Buck enjoyed stamp collecting.

Survivors include two sons, Steve, Anaheim, Calif., and Greg, Layton, Utah. He was preceded in death by a brother, Curtis.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Services-Siskiyou, Medford.

Raymond John Rozales

The graveside service for Raymond John Rozales will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Eagle Point National Cemetery. Pastor Arbee Freeman of the Family Christian Center, Medford, will officiate.

Mr. Rozales, 67, of Medford, died Tuesday (July 21, 1998) at Hearthstone.

He was born Dec. 12, 1930, in Santa Monica, Calif.

Mr. Rozales moved to the Rogue Valley eight years ago from Los Angeles.

He was an electrical engineer for Hughes Aircraft in Los Angeles and a mechanical engineer at Hearthstone from 1992 until 1996, when he became ill.

Mr. Rozales enjoyed remodeling, building stereos, classical music and collecting videos.

Survivors include his stepfather, Ray Casebeer, Ashland; a sister, Jeanetta Nipper, Medford; and a cousin, Helena Lawless, Atascadero, Calif.

Ralph Elwood Carlson

The graveside service for Ralph Elwood Carlson will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Eagle Point National Cemetery. Pastor Christopher White and members of Veterans of Foreign Wars will officiate.

Mr. Carlson, 80, formerly of Eagle Point, died Wednesday (July 22, 1998) at his home in Brookings.

He was born May 8, 1918, in Iroquois, S.D.

Mr. Carlson began a career in the U.S. Air Force in 1944, retiring as an airplane mechanic in 1964.

On Dec. 31, 1964, at Beale Air Force Base, Marysville, Calif., he married Charlotte Glendora Kiger, who survives.

The Carlsons moved to Eagle Point in 1964, where they owned and operated a ranch for 30 years.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four daughters, Sheila Palm, Medford, Sandra Pike, in Illinois, and Merribeth Carlson and Kristine Carlson, both Sacramento, Calif.; a son, Jonathan, Paradise, Calif.; a sister, Irma Scheurenbrand, Mitchell, S.D.; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Friends may pay their respects from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Steven Ramirez Bryant

Steven Gilbert C. Ramirez Bryant, infant son of David Ray and Tammy Mirelez Bryant of Central Point, died Sunday (July 19, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center. A private service will be held in Madera, Calif.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include a brother, Tyler, Central Point; grandparents, Gilbert and Connie Ortez, Madera, and Dave and Delores Bryant, Montague, Calif.; and great-grandparents, Herminia Mirelez, Madera, and Jim and Florence Johnston, Porterville, Calif.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, Medford.

Margaret `Ana' Harmon

Mass will be celebrated for Margaret Lucy "Ana" Harmon at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Medford. Archbishop Francis T. Hurley, Diocese of Anchorage, Alaska, will officiate. Interment will follow in Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.

Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Mrs. Harmon, 84, of Medford, died Wednesday (July 22, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent De Paul Society, P.O. Box 1663, Medford, OR 97501 or YMCA, 522 W. Sixth St., Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Feb. 12, 1914, in Claymont, Del. Her father was John J. Raskob, the industrialist and financier behind construction of the Empire State Building and a key player in the modern-day development of DuPont Co. and General Motors.

In 1940, in Kanab, Utah, she married Jay Harmon, who died in 1968. After living several years at the Grand Canyon, they moved to Douglas, Ariz., to ranch and farm.

In 1962, the Harmons moved to Medford, where she was a member of Sacred Heart Parish and a strong supporter of the Sacred Heart Hispanic community and St. Vincent De Paul Society.

Mrs. Harmon was instrumental in establishing the Southern Oregon Vicariate, an association of Catholic parishes in Jackson, Josephine and Douglas counties, and helped found St. Rita's Retreat Center in Gold Hill.

She was a longtime member of the Raskob Foundation for Catholic Activities, Inc., of Wilmington, Del.

Survivors include two sons, John J., and Thomas Joseph, both Medford; two daughters, Margaret Ellen Villaneuva, Dallas, Texas, and Mary Louise Harmon, Homewood, Ill.; four sisters, Nina B. Bennett, Estero, Fla., Patsy R. Bremer, Easton, Md., Mary Louise Duffy, Hockessin, Del., and Elizabeth A. Parkman, Tucson, Ariz.; a brother, Benjamin G. Raskob, Baltimore, Md.; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandson. She was preceded in death by three brothers, John Jr., William and Robert Raskob; and four sisters, Catherine, Yvonne, Helena and Josephine.

Friends may pay their respects at 6 p.m. Sunday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A vigil will be held at 7 p.m. today at the church.

John Alfred Drager

The memorial service for John Alfred Drager will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Ashland Elks Lodge.

Mr. Drager, 90, of Ashland, died Thursday (July 2, 1998) at Ashland Community Hospital.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.
