LaVerne C. Brown
The graveside service for LaVerne Charles Brown will be at 10 a.m. today in the Eagle Point National Cemetery. Minister Earl Best of Providence Medford Medical Center will officiate.
Mr. Brown, 60, of Central Point, died Wednesday (Aug. 19, 1998) at his home.
He was born Oct. 10, 1937, in Clarksville, Iowa.
On March 15, 1965, in Winterhaven, Calif., he married Hazel Jane Hackworth, who survives.
Mr. Brown moved to the Rogue Valley 33 years ago from Iowa.
He worked 24 years with Rogue Valley Bin Co.
Mr. Brown enjoyed playing drums in country-western bands.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three daughters, Jennifer Ann Yager, Medford, Traci Lynn Pebworth, Phoenix, and Katie Jane Valentino, Central Point; his mother, Verbena Brown, Clarksville; four brothers, Verland Jr., North Aurora, Ill., Harold, University Park, Iowa, and Melvin and Wayne, both Waverly, Iowa; three sisters, Kathleen Eliason, Roseau, Minn., Dixie Lynch, Waverly, and Janice Berger, Clarksville; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson.

Everett M. Smith
Everett M. Smith, 84, of Grants Pass, died Monday (Aug. 17, 1998) at a local adult care home. A private service is planned.
He was born May 19, 1914, in Chester, Ind.
On Jan. 11, 1956, in Reno, he married Laura, who survives.
During World War II, he served as a carpenter in the U.S. Army, stationed in Scotland.
Mr. Smith moved to Grants Pass in 1947.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association and Ducks Unlimited.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two stepsons, Art Kiser, Grants Pass, and Allen Kiser, Portland; a stepdaughter, Sharon Kiser, Phoenix; a brother, Glenn, Kenwood, Calif.; a sister, Jean Seal, Pensacola, Fla.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by five brothers and a sister.

Daniel Allen McKenna
Friends and relatives of Daniel Allen McKenna will gather to commemorate his life at 2 p.m. Saturday at the family home in Butte Falls.
Mr. McKenna, 73, of Butte Falls, died Wednesday (Aug. 19, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 20, 1925, in Arcadia, Calif.
In 1947, he married Betty Horton, who survives.
Mr. McKenna worked for Bank of America in Southern California for 38 years and was manager of the Cardiff By The Sea branch from 1964 to 1980. Upon his retirement, he and his wife moved to the Rogue Valley and built a home near Butte Falls.
Mr. McKenna sang with many chorale groups over the years including the Rogue Valley Chorale. He also enjoyed improving his forest land, traveling and crafting stained glass.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Steven and Michael, both Butte Falls; a daughter, Adana Barbieri, Ojai, Calif.; two brothers, Robert, Oatman, Ariz., and Fred, San Mateo, Calif.; a sister, Joyce Reimer, Southhampton, N.J.; and a granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Katherine Arey and Dorothy McKenna.

Clara Fonda Mann
The graveside service for Clara Fonda Mann will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Memory Gardens Memorial Park, Medford. Pastor Joel Williams of the New Life Assembly of God will officiate.
Mrs. Mann, 74, of Medford, died Wednesday (Aug. 19, 1998) at Hearthstone.

She was born Clara Fonda Blake on Nov. 28, 1923, in Orcutt, Calif.
On Nov. 12, 1966, in Reno, Nev., she married Robert Douglas Mann, who died in 1993. They moved to the Rogue Valley from Marysville, Calif., in 1970.
Mrs. Mann was a member of the New Life Assembly of God. She enjoyed church activities, dancing, and country music.
Survivors include three sons, Jeffery Fairey, Medford, Randy Mann, Turlock, Calif., and Mike Mann, Fort Bragg, Calif.; two daughters, Barbara J. Kolos, Sebastopol, Calif., and Connie K. Fairey, Yuba City, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Donald M. Baird
The graveside service for Donald Morrison Baird will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford. The Rev. Ray Elam of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Medford, will officiate.
Mr. Baird, 63, of Medford, died Wednesday (Aug. 19, 1998) in Medford.

He was born Aug. 12, 1935 in St. Louis, Mo.
Mr. Baird graduated from Columbia University in St. Louis, where he received a master's degree in psychology. He was an All American in wheelchair basketball.
From 1965 to 1974, he lived in Casper and Cheyenne, Wyo., where he was a vocational rehabilitationist for the state of Wyoming.
Mr. Baird moved to the Rogue Valley in 1974 from Wyoming and worked for the state of Oregon for two years in vocational rehabilitation.
In the late 1970s he owned and operated B & B Equipment in Shady Cove. He also worked as a mechanic for Wolford Equipment in Medford.
Survivors include a daughter, Laura Pogue, Medford; a son, David, Spokane, Wash.; a brother, James, Chicago, Ill.; and two grandchildren. A son, Donald M. Jr., died in 1989.

Terence J. Matthews
The graveside service for Terence James Matthews will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the Jacksonville Cemetery.
Mr. Matthews, 39, of Applegate, died Saturday (Aug. 15, 1998) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 3, 1959, in La Jolla, Calif.
Mr. Matthews moved to the Applegate Valley 15 years ago from Santa Cruz, Calif.
Mr. Matthews was a professional fine artist.
He attended the Ashland Institute of Art and San Francisco Art Institute.
On July 29, 1990, in Grants Pass, he married Elizabeth Hicks, who survives.
Mr. Matthews was a member of the Harley Honors Group. He enjoyed building and riding motorcycles and outdoor activities.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include his father and stepmother, Joseph and Judy Matthews, Eugene; three brothers, Mark, O'Brien; Patrick, Joseph; and Casey, in Hawaii; and two sisters, Michelle Walti, Hillsboro, and Monica Ohren, Portland.

Gene M. Kellenberger
Gene Marian Kellenberger, 77, formerly of Medford, died Aug. 12, 1998, in Portland. Her home was in Portland. No local service is planned.

She was born Gene Marian Forrest on Jan. 25, 1921, in Portland.
On Feb. 22, 1944, in Portland, she married Carl F. Kellenberger, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1959 from La Grande and returned to Portland in 1970.
While in Medford, Mrs. Kellenberger worked at the Medford Vision Clinic.
She enjoyed golfing, square dancing and music.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Candy Miller, Medford, and Karen Tate, Portland; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A son, Randall Forrest Kellenberger, preceded her in death.

Deloris `Doty' Hanscom
The graveside service for Deloris "Doty" Imogene Hanscom will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Phoenix Cemetery. Pastor Dave Humphreys of the Phoenix Church of Christ will officiate.
Mrs. Hanscom, 69, of Medford, died Sunday (Aug. 16, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

She was born June 27, 1929, in Ashland, a daughter of Lynn J. and Hazel M. Leslie. The family moved to Klamath Falls, where she completed fifth grade. They returned to Phoenix, where she finished school.
On Aug. 10, 1944, in Phoenix, she married William A. "Bill" Hanscom, who survives.
Mrs. Hanscom developed diabetes in 1945 and was one of the first patients to use the experimental insulin U80NPH, which controlled the disease.
She worked for Associated Fruit and for Bear Creek Orchards from 1963 to 1965.
Mrs. Hanscom owned Doty's
Coins and Furs in Medford in 1964.
In 1968, she moved to Reno, where she was a change girl at the Nevada Club. She moved to Shady Cove in 1987, then to Phoenix in 1994.
During the 1950s she was president of the Phoenix Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. In 1954, she made a dress out of gunny sacks and wore it during a TV spot to promote a fund-raising dance for the fire department, which needed a resuscitator. So many people wanted to dance with "the lady in the gunny sack" that the department raised a record amount of money and got its resuscitator.
She was a member of the Phoenix Church of Christ.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Donald L., Cave Junction; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson. She was preceded in death by a son, Dwight J.; and two sisters, Evelyn Arnold and Lanora Strawn.
