Peter A. Arapoff
The memorial service for Peter A. Arapoff will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at 969 E. Nevada St., Ashland.
Mr. Arapoff, 66, of Ashland, died Monday (Aug. 29, 1998) at Ashland Community Hospital.

He was born July 2, 1932, in Cambridge, Mass., and grew up in Scituate, Mass.
Mr. Arapoff received a master's degree in English from the University of California, Berkeley, where he also did post-graduate work.
He taught English and comparative literature at the University of Arizona, Tucson, and the University of Hawaii, Oahu.
Mr. Arapoff owned and operated Ala Wai Marine in Honolulu, Hawaii, for 27 years before selling the business in 1992. He moved to Ashland in 1993.
On Sept. 23, 1983, in Honolulu, he married Amelia Miller, who survives.
For the past 15 years, he coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball. His 1998 Babe Ruth team sponsored by Darex Corp. took first place in the 13-year-old division. In Hawaii he also coached basketball and soccer, sang in the Honolulu Symphony Chorus and Honolulu Opera Chorus, and enjoyed racing yachts. He was a member of Siskiyou Singers in Ashland.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include five sons, Mike, Ashland, twins Duke and Zakh, both Ashland, and Nikan and Dmitri, both Honolulu; a daughter, Andreya Arapoff, Honolulu; two brothers, Paul, Ashland, and John, Marshfield, Mass.; three sisters, Ann Marie Bird, Rochester, N.Y., Mary McEwen, Arlington, Mass., and Cathy Arapoff, New York City; and a granddaughter. A son, Yuri, preceded him in death.

Dorothy L. Walker
Dorothy L. Walker, 81, of Ashland, died Monday (Aug. 31, 1998) at Ashland Community Hospital. No service is planned.
Mrs. Walker was a member of the Yurok Indian tribe. Her ashes will be scattered on her ancestors' homeland in Klamath, Calif.
She was born Dorothy Puzz on March 22, 1917, in Crescent City, Calif., where she graduated from Del Norte County High School.
Mrs. Walker received a degree in cosmetology from the Sherman Institute in Riverside, Calif.
She owned and operated a San Francisco beauty salon for more than 30 years.
In 1981, she moved to Ashland where she was co-owner of Ashland's Main Street Inn Bed & Breakfast.
Survivors include a daughter, Roanne Lyal, Ashland; two sisters, Edna Cuddie and Norma Dankulich, both Klamath; a granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded death by her husband, Delbert, in 1971; and a brother, Henry Puzz.

Minnie Hutchison
The funeral for Minnie Hutchison will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the Conger-Morris Chapel, Medford. Pastor Dwayne Brown of the Central Point First Presbyterian Church will officiate.
Mrs. Hutchison, 96, of Sams Valley, died Tuesday (Sept. 1, 1998) at her home.
She was born Minnie Jennings on Aug. 20, 1902, in Atkinson, Neb., and moved to Sams Valley in 1915.
In 1922, in Roseburg, she married Charlie Hutchison, who died in 1966.
Mrs. Hutchison worked at Taylor Maid Pickle Factory in the Table Rock community in the 1950s, then for SOS Packing House in the 1960s.
For the past 23 years, she lived in Sams Valley with her daughter and son-in-law.
Mrs. Hutchison enjoyed sporting events and cattle shows.
Survivors include her daughter, Vernola Anderson, Sams Valley; a sister, Edith Coxen, Billings, Mont.; and a granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a son, Roy Dale; and three brothers.

Melvin `Mel' Goodale
The funeral for Melvin "Mel" O. Goodale will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland. The Rev. Don Baker will officiate. Interment will follow in Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland.
Mr. Goodale, 76, of Medford, died Sunday (Aug. 30, 1998) at Hearthstone.

He was born July 28, 1922, in Hydesville, Calif. He grew up in Sams Valley, then moved to Fortuna, Calif., where he graduated from high school.
On Oct. 13, 1945, in Santa Rosa, Calif., he married Luella Virginia Hawks, who survives.
Mr. Goodale was an electronics technician for 17 years with North American Aviation/Rocketdyne. Later he was an independent truck driver until retiring in 1977.
Mr. Goodale moved to Ashland in 1974, then settled in Medford in 1980.
He enjoyed working on engines.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Michael D., Medford; two daughters, Sherrian Whitaker, Seattle, and Lynda Goodale, Long Beach, Calif.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Carlos Chaves
Carlos Chaves, 78, formerly of Shady Cove, died Aug. 23, 1998, at his home in Lompoc, Calif. A private inurnment is planned.

He was born Aug. 15, 1920, in Gaviota, Calif.
He was raised in Lompoc and graduated from Lompoc High School.
Mr. Chaves was a carpenter and foreman of vocational training for the U.S. Bureau of Prisons for 24 years at Lompoc Penitentiary. He retired in 1970.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
He moved to Shady Cove in 1980 from Lompoc, then returned to Lompoc in August of this year.
Mr. Chaves was a member of the Lompoc Elks Lodge, Lompoc Masonic Lodge 262 F & AM and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Mary E. Chaves, Lompoc; two sons, Sherman Hansen and Ron Hansen, both Lompoc; three sisters, Jenny Armas, Lompoc, Adelina Dogget, Conway, Ark., and Angie Nordell, Huntington Beach, Calif.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marylin Ann Howerton in 1958; and three brothers, George, Joseph and Johnny.

Margaret S. Bloom
The funeral for Margaret Grace Shreeve Bloom will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Siskiyou Chapel, Medford.
Mrs. Bloom, 96, of Medford, died Wednesday (Sept. 2, 1998) at Three Fountains Nursing Center.
She was born Margaret Shreeve on Sept. 16, 1901, in Westminster, Md.
Mrs. Bloom moved to the Rogue Valley in 1970 from Taneytown, Md.
In 1970, in Applegate, she married Ralph E. Bloom, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Bloom was an elementary school teacher for 49 years in Maryland and Pennsylvania.
She was chorus director and organist for Grace Reform Church in Taneytown and a member of Jackson County Toastmistresses, Order of Eastern Star and the Sewing Club of Little Applegate.
Survivors include three nephews, Bill Shreeve, Central Point, Robert Shreeve, Medford, and Earl Shreeve, Mayfield Village, Ohio; and a niece, Frances Pierpoint, Fort Walton Beach, Fla. A brother, Phillip S. Shreeve, preceded her in death.

Bernice F. Stephenson
The graveside service for Bernice F. Stephenson will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the Eagle Point National Cemetery. The Rev. John Braund will officiate.
Mrs. Stephenson, 73, of Phoenix, died Saturday (Aug. 29, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

She was born Bernice Ensley on Dec. 23, 1924, in Sacramento, Calif.
On June 2, 1941, in Carson City, Nev., she married James Walter Stephenson, who died in 1990. They moved to Ashland in 1966 from Sacramento and moved to Phoenix in 1985.
Mrs. Stephenson was an active volunteer for Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include two sons, Ted, Medford, and Joe, Rancho Cordova, Calif.; a daughter, Phyllis Ann Meyer, Lena, Ill.; a sister, Dorothy Bircher, Brookings; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Elvin L. Ensley Jr.

William H. Newman Jr.
William Harrison Newman Jr., 64, of Medford, died Saturday (Aug. 29, 1998) at his home. A private service was held.

He was born Aug. 26, 1934, in Hilt, Calif., a son of William and Edna Newman.
On Dec. 18, 1952, in Yreka, Calif., he married Donna L. Williams, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley 40 years ago from Lakeview.
Mr. Newman was a production manager for Boise Cascade Corp. formerly Elk Lumber, for 40 years until retiring in 1990.
He enjoyed gardening and sports.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Sandra Peck, Jacksonville, and Cherie Newman, Springville; a son, Stan, Eugene; a brother, Sam, Medford; two sisters, Jeraldine Harris, Montague, Calif., and Jessie Wiman, Sacramento, Calif.; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a sister, Pearl Smith.
