Julia Tummers
Julia J. Tummers, a gifted cook who founded Mon Desir and made the Central Point restaurant a national landmark, died Friday (Sept. 4, 1998) at 93.
Julia Pesi learned cooking while growing up in an Italian family in Fields Landing on the north California coast. She would help her mother cook and bake for the single men in the logging camps.
She worked in retailing in San Francisco after the death of her first husband, but she continued cooking.
Friends in Medford talked her into starting a restaurant here and found a promising location in the Conro Fiero mansion on Hamrick Road. It was built in 1910 by the millionaire for his bride, the former Grace Andrews.
It was a family business. Tummers was the cook, her husband, Alec Tummers, greeted diners and son Roland was the bartender. A couple of waitresses and a dishwasher completed the staff.
Her prime rib, veal scaloppini and chicken cacciatore were the most popular menu items. Mon Desir made Life magazine's list of the nation's 49 outstanding dining inns in "out of way" places.
She sold the restaurant in 1965 and was a consultant to the owners of the Jacksonville Inn.
Tummers was among the first official visitors to Alba, Medford's Italian sister city. "I speak the language," she told a reporter in a 1991 profile.
She was active with the Sister Cittee Committee and returned to Alba twice more. In 1984 she was initiated into the Ordine dei Tartufo e dei Vini d'Alba, an epicurian order.
