Dr. Herbert G. Barber

The memorial service for Dr. Herbert Gordon Barber will be at 12:30 p.m. Sunday in the Zion Lutheran Church in Medford. The Rev. Lou Schneider will officiate.

Dr. Barber, 84, of Medford, died Wednesday (Sept. 9, 1998) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to Herbert Barber Memorial Trust Fund, Zion Lutheran Church, 516 W. Fourth St., Medford, OR 97501.

He was born April 8, 1914, in St. Louis, Mo.

On Dec. 21, 1940, in Nebraska, he married Sylva J. Jorgensen, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley 35 years ago from Nebraska.

Dr. Barber was a physician, running a private practice for seven years and serving on American Indian reservations and in government facilities for 50 years. He retired in 1971 from the Veterans Affairs Domiciliary in White City.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

Dr. Barber was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Medford and enjoyed needlepoint, reading and church activities.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, John, Copenhagen, Denmark; a daughter, Ann Link, Sacramento, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Sister Ernestine Marie, 86, dies; known for Medford hospital work

Ernestine Marie Reisenauer, a sister of Providence and administrator of Providence hospitals in Oregon and Washington, died Sept. 4, 1998 in Seattle.

She was 86.

Sister Ernestine Marie was best-known for her tenures at Providence Medical Centers in Portland and Medford, where she spearheaded massive rebuilding projects.

She was assistant administrator at the Medford hospital during its $7 million expansion in 1975. The project brought the hospital to 168 beds and was its first addition since 1966. The project also added laboratory, surgery, X-ray and emergency outpatient facilities, a central supply facility, and departments for nuclear and respiratory medicine.

Born Mary Wilhelmina Reisenauer in Colton, Wash., she took her vows as a sister of Providence in 1933. She earned nursing degrees at the University of Portland and Catholic University of America.

From 1941 through 1959, she was director of nursing at Providence schools in Yakima, Wash., Portland and Astoria. She was also dean of the College of Nursing at the University of Portland.

She was administrator of Providence Portland Medical Center from 1959 to 1966, years marked by widespread building on the medical campus. She was provincial treasurer for the Sisters of Providence through 1973.

She returned to hospital administration in 1974 and retired in 1988.

A funeral Mass was held Wednesday at St. Joseph Residence in Seattle. Burial followed at Calvary Cemetery.

Patricia M. Douglas

Patricia M. Douglas, 55, of Medford, died Tuesday (Sept. 1, 1998) at Hearthstone. A private memorial service will be held at Siskiyou Chapel. The Rev. John Braund of Phoenix First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Inurnment will be in Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.

She was born Patricia Goslin on Sept. 10, 1942, in Los Angeles, Calif.

Mrs. Douglas was an executive secretary for Keiser Oil in Long Beach, Calif. She moved to the Rogue Valley from Long Beach in 1985.

She enjoyed snow skiing, playing pool, and playing her banjo.

Survivors include two daughters, Kari Vandergriff, Medford, and Kris Randall, Moreno Valley, Calif.; two brothers, Albert and Joe Goslin, both in California; a sister, Jan Torrance, Truckee, Calif.; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Alvinza Goslin.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Services, Medford.

Minnie L. Bates

The funeral for Minnie L. Bates will be at 2 p.m. today at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland. Her grandson, David Bates of Pendleton, will officiate. Interment will be in the Mountain View Cemetery, Ashland.

Mrs. Bates, 98, of Medford, died Wednesday (Sept. 9, 1998) at the Medford Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

She was born Minnie Jackson on Nov. 18, 1899, in Dallas, Texas. She was raised in Texas.

On July 2, 1916, in Paris, Texas, she married Charlie D. Bates, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Bates moved to New Mexico in 1930, where she lived until she moved to Medford in 1953.

She was a member of the Phoenix Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Vivian Starnes, Medford; a son, David Eugene Bates, Pendleton; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and a great-great-great-granddaughter.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Deleeta Marie Neckritz

The funeral for Deleeta Marie Neckritz will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Central Valley Chapel, 800 S. Front St., Central Point. The Rev. John Braund of the the First Presbyterian Church in Medford will officiate.

Mrs. Neckritz, 58, of Central Point, died Wednesday (Sept. 9, 1998) at her home.

She was born Deleeta Marie Mosier on Dec. 20, 1939, in Ankeny, Iowa.

On April 19, 1974, in Reno, Nev., she married Walter Neckritz, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1988 from Redwood City, Calif.

Mrs. Neckritz owned and operated the Children's Closet on Pine Street in Central Point. She also worked at the Central Point Cleaners.

She was a member of the Unity Church.

Mrs. Neckritz enjoyed raising dogs and playing bingo.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three daughters, Donavee DeFoort and Delores Alarno, both of Medford, and Deenena Gibble, San Raphael, Calif.; two sons, Preston `Guy' McCllough, Phoenix, and Tim `Billy' Sims, Los Angeles; three sisters, Darlene, DePhane Hunter, and Demetra Delco. She was preceded in death by a son, Dwayne Dean Gibble, two brothers, Warren and Waldon Mosier, and a grandson, Jack DeFoort Jr.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Central Valley Chapel.

Dorothy R. Johannsen

The memorial service for Dorothy Johannsen will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Rogue Valley Christian Church, 1440 S. Oakdale, Medford. The Rev. Jim Larsen will officiate.

Mrs. Johannsen, 78, of Medford, died Tuesday (Sept. 8, 1998) in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to WinterSpring, P.O. Box 8169, Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Dorothy Overholt on Oct. 2, 1919, in Portland, Kan.

On Dec. 25, 1944, in Anchorage, Alaska, she married Fred Johannsen, who survives.

Mrs. Johannsen graduated from the School of Nursing at Wesley Hospital in Wichita, Kan. Upon receiving her degree as a Registered Nurse, she volunteered for duty with the U.S. Army Nurse Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant. She was assigned to a station hospital in Cold Bay, Alaska, part of the Aleutian Islands, where she met her husband.

Upon completion of their Army service, the couple settled in Lebanon, where they owned and operated a business for 18 years. They moved to Medford in 1964.

Mrs. Johannsen was an industrial nurse for Bear Creek Corp. After retirement, she and her husband traveled by motor home throughout the United States, Canada, Alaska and Mexico.

She taught first aid for the Red Cross for many years, and enjoyed her work with the Winterspring organization, helping children adjust to loss and grief.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Frederic III, Medford; two daughters, Kay Jakubowski, Ridgecrest, Calif., and Lori Kingston, Portland; a brother, Gene Overholt, San Raphael, Calif.; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Overholt.

Clyde R. Winsbury Jr.

The memorial service for Clyde R. Winsbury Jr. will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Conger-Morris Chapel.

Mr. Winsbury, 70, of Gold Hill, died Wednesday (Sept. 9, 1998) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born June 21, 1928, in Yarmouth, Maine. He moved to the Rogue Valley from Southern California 10 years ago.

Mr. Winsbury was a retired electrical engineer.

He enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include five sons, Gary and David Winsbury, and Dale, Larry and Paul Murray; a daughter, Dianne Winsbury; two brothers, Richard and Bill; and three sisters, Janice Garvey, Clydene McMann, and Irene Winsbury.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Kenneth W. Higgins

The memorial service for Kenneth W. Higgins will be at 2 p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church in Medford. The Rev. Emmett Shortreed will officiate. Inurnment will be in Siskiyou Memorial Park.

Mr. Higgins, 84, of Medford, died Monday (Sept. 7, 1998) at Hearthstone.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 607 W. Main St., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born March 25, 1914 in Dayton, Iowa.

On March 18, 1949, in Seattle, he married Charlotte Quash, who survives.

Mr. Higgins attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He was an estimator in the finance department at Boeing from 1941 until his retirement in 1980. He moved to the Rogue Valley from Seattle in 1993.

He was a member of the Medford Elks Lodge, the Masonic Lodge in Iowa, and the First United Methodist Church in Medford.

He enjoyed golfing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Clark, Fairfax, Calif.; two brothers, Maurice, Las Vegas, Nev., and LeRoy, Roland, Iowa; and two grandchildren.
