Bertha Alice Loder

Bertha Alice Loder, 81, of Phoenix, died Thursday (Oct. 15, 1998) at her home. A service will be held, at a later date.

She was born Bertha A. Shatto on July 5, 1917 in Reger, Mo.

On Nov. 12, 1938, in Milan, Mo., she married Justin E. Loder, who survives.

Mrs. Loder grew up in Milan, and moved to Southern California when she was in her early twenties. She was a baker and cook for the Los Angeles County School System. She retired from the Los Angeles County Welfare Department.

She was a member of the Talent Methodist Church and enjoyed cooking, camping, fishing and people.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three daughters, Barbara Gravenkamp, Yreka, Calif., Ann Enge, Bakersfield, Calif., and Mary Loder, Chino Hills, Calif.; a brother, James Shatto, Milan, Mo.; and eight grandchildren.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.

Evelyn M. Hendricks

The memorial service for Eveylyn Mildred Hendricks will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ascension Lutheran Church, Medford. The Rev. Robert Larson will officiate. Inurnment will be at Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.

Mrs. Hendricks, 91, of Central Point, died Wednesday (Oct. 14, 1998) at her home.

She was born Evelyn M. Niss, on Jan. 13, 1907, in Elgin, Ill. She married Dr. Otis Brooks Hendricks in June 1955 in the Rogue Valley.

Mrs. Hendricks was a member of The Ascension Lutheran Church in Medford, and of The Eastern Star.

She was an accomplished seamstress and loved to knit, crochet and do crewel work.

Survivors include one cousin, Barbara Vance of Forest Falls, Calif.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary.

John "Jack" H. O'Toole

John "Jack" H. O'Toole, 89, of Medford, died Wednesday(Oct. 14, 1998) at his home in Medford. No services are planned.

He was born on March 29, 1909 in Waterbury, Conn., and married Marjorie Gracie, Jan. 23, 1932 in New York City.

He moved to the Rogue Valley four years ago.

Mr. O'Toole was the vice president of Westinghouse Corporation, and had worked in merchandising and advertising.

He enjoyed golf and tennis.

Survivors include his wife, of Medford; his son, Dr. Richard O'Toole of Talent, Or.; and three grandchildren.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives.

Dr. Jack C. Free

Dr. Jack C. Free, 76, of Ashland, died Tuesday (Oct. 13, 1998) at his home. A private service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

He was born Nov. 26, 1921, in Coldwater, Mich., and raised in Indiana.

Dr. Free attended the University of Nebraska and Creighton College.

During World War II and the Korean War he served in the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of major.

In 1964, he moved to San Diego, Calif., where he operated a dental surgery practice.

On July 18, 1982, in San Diego, he married Rita TenEyck, who survives. They lived in Paradise and San Luis Obispo, Calif., before moving to Ashland in 1990.

Dr. Free played tenor saxophone and clarinet in numerous bands throughout the Northwest. He was a member of The Retired Officers Association and also enjoyed traveling.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Mark, San Jose, Calif., and Kenneth, North San Juan, Calif.; a daughter, Valentine Lotspeich, Orinda, Calif.; a brother, John, Oklahoma City, Okla.; and numerous grandchildren. A brother preceded him in death.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Kenneth M. Stocks

A memorial service for Kenneth M. Stocks will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church of Coos Bay. The Rev. Chris E. von Lobedan will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

A memorial service will be held later in Medford.

Mr. Stocks, 72, formerly of Medford, died Thursday (Oct. 15, 1998) in Coos Bay, where he was living.

Memorial contributions may be made to South Coast Hospice, 1620 Thompson Road, Coos Bay, OR 97420 or the First Presbyterian Church of Coos Bay, 438 Elrod, Coos Bay, OR 97420.

He was born Jan. 8, 1926, in Dubuque, Iowa.

Mr. Stocks graduated from Medford High School and Southern Oregon College.

On Dec. 26, 1946, in Medford, he married Janet Charley, who survives.

Mr. Stocks served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

During a 31-year career with the Coos Bay School District, he was principal of Blossom Gulch Elementary School, Coos River School and Bunker Hill School.

Mr. Stocks enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Karen Hale, Keno; two sons, Tom, Eugene, and Mike, Portland; a brother, Ardo, Bremerton, Wash.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A sister, Muriel Rose, preceded him in death.

Arrangements: Coos Bay Chapel.

Ute Verkempinck

Ute Verkempinck, 37, of Medford, died Wednesday (Oct. 14, 1998) at her home. A memorial service was held Oct. 15 at the Unitarian Center in Ashland.

She was born Ute Becker on April 30, 1961, in Dusseldorf, Germany.

In 1992, in San Francisco, she married Frederick Verkempinck, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1996 from San Francisco.

Mrs. Verkempinck worked for Lufthansa Airlines in Dusseldorf.

After immigrating to the United States in 1991, she was a tour guide in San Francisco. She was pursuing a real estate license in Medford before becoming ill.

Mrs. Verkempinck enjoyed dogs, horses and the outdoors.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include her mother, Liselotte Becker, Dusseldorf; a brother, Dieter Becker, Dusseldorf; and two sisters, Rosemarie Becker, Munich, Germany, and Gisela Grisse, Dusseldorf.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

David Brian Johnson

David Brian Johnson, 35, of Medford, died Wednesday (Oct. 14, 1998) at his home. A private service will be held later. Inurnment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park, Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Hospice, 2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Nov. 5, 1962, in Portland, and lived most of his life in the Rogue Valley.

Mr. Johnson was a 1981 graduate of Medford Senior High School. He graduated from Brooks College in 1986 with an associate of arts degree in fashion merchandising.

He had a career in merchandising display in Portland.

Survivors include his parents, Ernest "Bud" and Kathleen "Kathy" Johnson, Medford; a brother, Keith, Englewood, Colo.; and a sister, Jill Divers, Livermore, Calif.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Matthew H. Wilhelms

The graveside service for Matthew Harold Wilhelms, infant son of Clint and Kristina Welhelms of Medford, will be at 2 p.m. today in Hawthorne Memorial Gardens, 2500 Upper River Road, Grants Pass. Pastor Chad McComas of the Rogue Valley Fellowship will officiate.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include a sister, Meagan Wilhelms; a brother, Michael; and grandparents, Bill and Jeanie Wilhelms, Medford, and Eleanor Burkett, Days Creek.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, Medford.
