Betty May Madison
The memorial service for Betty May Madison will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 20, 2001 at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, 1811 Ashland St., Ashland. Margaret Stephenson of the Unity Church of Ashland will officiate.

Betty May Madison, 82, of Ashland died Wednesday, October 17, 2001 at Oakcrest Retirement Home in Phoenix, Ore.
Mrs. Madison was born February 23, 1919 in Columbus, Ohio, to Charles D. and Clara M. (Brodt) Burkert. She was a 1947 graduate of the University of Ohio. She worked for the State of Nevada for 15 years, retiring in 1978, at which time she moved to Ashland. She was a charter member of the Unity Church of Ashland and enjoyed world traveling.
Survivors include her son, Denny Madison of Boulder Creek, Calif., and grandchildren David and Victoria Madison of Boulder Creek, Calif. She was preceded in death by two brothers.

Vern E. Edwards
At his request, no services will be held for Vern E. Edwards, 92, of Talent, who died Monday, October 15, 2001 at Linda Vista Care Center.
Mr. Edwards was born April 2, 1909 to James L. and Lillian Belle (Terry) Edwards in Beatrice, Neb. He grew up in Beatrice and attended school there.
On December 10, 1933 he married Cecilia R. Mitlawski and they moved to the eastern San Francisco Bay area in 1948, where they raised three children.
In 1966, they moved to the Talent-Ashland area.
Mr. Edwards made a career of professional house painting and paper hanging. His hobbies were fishing, acrylic painting, gardening, and arts and crafts. He also enjoyed rock-hounding and lapidary work, as well as home maintenance.
Survivors include a son, Gregory L. Edwards of Roseburg, Ore.; two daughters, DeAnna LaBrensz of Talent, Ore., and Susan M. Rivers of Chandler, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Gary P. LaBrensz of Talent, Ore., Renee Medina of Roy, Utah, Robert Buckles of Hillsboro, Ore., and Kimberly Wood of Rhododendron, Ore.; and seven great-grandchildren. Vern Edwards was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Cecilia, who died in February of this year, and two brothers and one sister.

Robert Edmond Blair
A memorial service for Phoenix resident Robert Edmond Blair will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at the Ashland First Methodist Church, 175 N. Main St.
The Rev. Michael Powell will officiate. Private interment will follow at the Eagle Point National Cemetery in Eagle Point.
Those who wish to pay their respects may do so between 4 and 7 p.m. on Monday at the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, 1811 Ashland St.
Blair, 76, died on Thursday at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford.
Born on Aug. 31, 1925 at Waterbury, Conn. to Clarence and Norma (Terrell) Blair, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946. He received the Purple Heart for wounds received at Luxembourg in 1945. Following the war, he worked in lumber sales in Massachusetts and California.
On July 5, 1966, he married the former Rose Duval in New Hampshire.
They moved to Ashland in 1989, where Blair was very involved in the Ashland First Methodist Church, setting up trips for senior members of the church. He also worked at the Ashland Chamber of Commerce for many years.
Survivors include his wife; daughter, Joan Walker of Brookfield, Mass.; stepdaughters, Susan Masterson of Eugene, Ore. and Sandra Flannery of Norco, Calif.; stepson, Albert Duval of Kapaa, Hawaii; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Clara Lucille McKinstry
Private inurnment will be in Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, Calif., for Clara Lucille McKinstry, of Ashland who died Saturday, October 20, 2001 at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Medford. No services are planned.
Mrs. McKinstry was born August 6, 1908 in Paducah, Texas, to Clyde T. and Julia I. (Bettis) Chalk. In 1920 she moved with her parents and sister, Helen Louise, from San Antonio, Texas, to California.
She toured with several stage revues as a dancer before marrying John Irwin McKinstry on December 16, 1930 in Los Angeles, Calif. In later years she received a Bachelor's of Arts degree from California State University, Los Angeles.
In 1976 she moved to Ashland where she was a member of the Ashland chapter of A.A.U.W.
Survivors include her daughter Mickey Bruner of Medford; three grandchildren, Laurie J. Patton of Ashland, Lisa A. Pittenger of Springfield, Ore., and Brian A. Bruner of Gold Hill, Ore.; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Irwin McKinstry in 1986, and her sister Mrs. H.Y. Irwin.

Richard Bennett Varney
Richard Varney, 66, of Medford died Friday, October 26, 2001 at Hearthstone Manor in Medford. No services are planned at this time.

Mr. Varney was born Feb. 16, 1935 in Livermore, Calif., to Henry Lungren and Cora Evelyn (Davis) Varney. He married Eva Feeler in 1953 in Grants Pass, who survives.
Mr. Varney had lived in the Rogue Valley since 1947, moving here from Livermore, Calif. He was in the U.S. Marine Corp for four years, serving during the Korean Conflict. He served on the Ashland Police Department from 1960 to 1964. Then Mr. Varney worked for the BLM until he retired in 1995. He enjoyed target shooting, fishing, and hunting.
Survivors include his wife Eva Varney of Medford; three sons, Gene Carl, Gary Henry, and Richard Robert, all of Medford; two daughters, Kathryn Lynn Hernandez of Phoenix, and Sheri Elaine Fears of Lovelock, Nevada; a brother, Robert Varney of Ashland; a sister, Nelda Mallory of Danville, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mary Gertrude Walton
Mary Gertrude Walton, 86, of Talent died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001 at a foster care home in Phoenix. No services are planned.
Mrs. Walton was born in Pilot Butte, Ore., on July 3, 1915 to Nathan B. Beach and Mary Harriet Frost. She married John (Jack) Walton in Reno, Nevada on Oct. 9, 1940, who preceded her in death in 1996. She came to Talent from Gold Hill in 1973.
Mary Walton owned and operated a hair styling salon in Winston, Ore., during the 1960s. She also enjoyed homemaking and sewing.
Survivors include her daughter, Shirley Breazeal of Corvallis.; twin grandsons; two step-grandsons; and a brother, Delbert Yordy of Tulelake, Calif.
