Frank H. Van West
The funeral for Frank Hendrikus Van West will be at 2 p.m. today at the Siskiyou Chapel, 2100 Siskiyou Blvd., Medford. Burial will be in Siskiyou Memorial Park. Everett Cade will officiate.
Mr. Van West, 85, of Medford, died Friday (Dec. 18, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

He was born on Nov. 17, 1913, in Pretoria, South Africa.
On May 2, 1953, in Salt Lake City, he married Betty North, who survives. He moved to the Rogue Valley from Santa Rosa, Calif., in 1991.
Mr. Van West was a classical piano teacher, composer and performer.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Barry Van West, Seattle; and a brother, Piet Van Der Westhuizen, South Africa.

Hulda C. Bettencourt
The graveside service for Hulda C. Bettencourt will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Mrs. Bettencourt, 76, of Eagle Point, died Saturday (Dec. 19, 1998) at her home.
She was born Hulda Carolyn Schrader on June 12, 1922, in Garfield, Ariz.
On May 29, 1940, she married John S. Bettencourt. They later divorced. She moved to the Rogue Valley from Sacramento in 1986.
Mrs. Bettencourt enjoyed sewing and crafts.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Adams, Eagle Point, and Linda La Franchi, Bend; two brothers, Gene Schrader and Lynn Schrader, both of Myrtle Point; three sisters, Lillian Arrell, Central Point, Louise Beck, Myrtle Point, and Ruth Holmes, Coos Bay; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Conger-Morris in Medford.
Garth F. Flint
Garth F. Flint, 87, of Tucson, formerly of Lake Creek, died Thursday (Dec. 17, 1998) in Tucson, Ariz.

He was born June 14, 1911, in Tonopah, Nev., and grew up in Oakland, Calif. While in grade school his test scores attracted the attention of Stanford researcher Dr. Louis Terman, and he became one of the lifelong subjects of Terman's studies of gifted children.
In 1936 he married Mary Louise Hall, who survives.
Mr. Flint received a degree in forestry from the University of California at Berkeley and worked for the United States Forest Service. He was a district ranger for the Santa Barbara and Santa Maria, Calif., ranger districts.
During World War II he worked for Lockheed. In 1944, he bought a cattle ranch in Santa Barbara County.
Mr. Flint purchased a cattle ranch in Lake Creek in 1959, which he owned and operated until it was sold to Glenn Jackson in 1952. Mr. Flint then became manager of Jackson's cattle operation, Cascade Ranches. He oversaw the development of Cascade Ranches into a 1,200-cow operation, and ran it until his retirement in 1985.
He was president of the Santa Barbara County Farm Bureau and was active in the Santa Barbara Farm Cattlemen's Association.
Mr. Flint volunteered for the Nature Conservancy and was a member of the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum.
He moved to Tucson in 1989 where he enjoyed working on projects at home.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Elizabeth Bezanson, Tucson; three sons, Michael, Santa Clara, Calif., Garth, Newport Beach, Calif., and Mark, Tucson; and 17 grandchildren.

Edie Farrington Maxwell
The memorial service of Edie Farrington Maxwell will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Hillcrest Chapel, Medford. Pastor John Braund of the First Presbyterian Church of Phoenix will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity, in lieu of flowers.
Ms. Maxwell, 82, of Ashland, died on Friday (Dec. 4, 1998) at Ashland Community Hospital.
She was born Edith Farrington on Sept. 13, 1916, to Marvin and Ethelmae Farrington in Washington, D.C. She had lived in the Rogue Valley for 20 years after moving from Denver, Colo.
Ms. Maxwell worked as a cytologist in the medical field and retired from Rogue Valley Hospital. She belonged to the Master Gardners Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and genealogy.
She is survived by three daughters, Susan, Jane and Sally; a grandson, Christopher. She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Jayne of Dallas, Texas.

David McKee Wood

Mr. Wood, 55, of Trail, died Wednesday (Dec. 2, 1998) at his home.
He was born on Feb. 9, 1943, at Pasadena, Calif. He had lived in the Rogue Valley for 10 years after moving from La Canada, Calif.
Mr. Wood was a financial advisor. He was a stockbroker for Dain Rauscher (formerly DainBosworth) and PaineWebber in Medford until his retirement. He enjoyed fishing and was a gourmet cook.
Survivors include three sons, David McKee Wood Jr., Portland; Jeffrey David Wood, Los Angeles; Eric Robert Wood, Trail; a stepdaughter, Stacey Lee Doss, Fresno, Calif.; two brothers, William Grant Wood Jr., La Canada; Gill Wood, Corona Del Mar, Calif.; and sister, Dagmar Wood, Seattle.
Arrangements: Neptune Society of Southern Oregon.
Edward A. Early
The funeral Mass for Edward A. Early will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church with burial to follow at Siskiyou Memorial Park. Rev. Ray Elam of Sacred Heart Church will officiate.
Mr. Early, 65, of Medford, died Saturday (Dec. 19, 1998) at his home.

He was born April 5, 1933, in Petaluma, Calif., a son of Remond Allan and Agatha Mae Early.
He was a 1955 graduate of Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, Calif., and on Aug. 13, 1955, he married Joan A. Maestretti in Petaluma.
After two years service in the U.S. Army at Ft. Lewis, Wash., he worked for 10 years for Fireman's Fund Insurance Co. in Sacramento, Calif., and Portland, and in 1966 he earned the President's Award of the Oregon Association of Insurance Agents.
In 1968 he and his family moved to Medford, where he became a partner in Security Insurance Agency. He retired in 1996.
A community activist, he served 19 years on the Providence Hospital Community Board, was the first chairman of the St. Mary's High School Marvelous Magic of Auction, was a member of the Bronco Bench and President's Club of the University of Santa Clara and belonged to the Kiwanis Club.
He was an avid reader who enjoyed golf, tennis and the San Francisco 49ers.
Survivors include his wife, Joan; sons Allan and John, Mill Valley, Calif.; daughters Cathy Lynn Thompson and Teri Marie Copley, Medford; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A wake will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Perl Funeral Services, 2100 Siskiyou Boulevard, Medford.
Lilly May DeCosta
Lilly May DeCosta, 82, of Central Point, died Friday (Dec. 18,1998) at her home. She was inurned at Eagle Point National Cemetery after a private service.
She was born Jan. 31, 1916, in Coquille, where on Oct. 21, 1933, she married Franklin DeCosta. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1950.
Mrs. DeCosta was a homemaker and member of the Royal Neighbors and the Medford Lady Elks. For the past two years, she attended Providence Senior Day Center each day.
She loved handiwork, including sewing, knitting and crocheting, and animals, especially dogs.
She is survived by a granddaughter, Teri Henderson, Central Point. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Delores Soots in 1988 and her husband, Franklin, in 1992.

Eleanor M. Ross
A memorial service will be held at a later date for Eleanor Marion Ross, 79, of Medford, who died Friday (Dec. 18, 1998) at Ashland Community Hospital.

She was born May 11, 1919, at Marion, Mass., the daughter of Hanorah and Angus MacKinnon, and was later adopted by Mary and Spencer Pearson. She was raised in Boston and attended the New York School of Advertising. During World War II, she served in the Continental Army Air Force and was an Army Band vocalist.
On Jan. 15, 1943 at Victorville, Calif., she married Forrest Evans Ross, who preceded her in death in 1967.
Mrs. Ross was active in theater groups and radio shows, and lived in Ashland, Medford and Talent after moving back to the Rogue Valley in 1977.
She was a 50-year member and past District 4 commander of the American Legion and volunteered with Dunn House, the Veterans Affairs Domiciliary Standdown Program and the Foster Parent Association.
Surviving are her companion Rocky Blomker, Medford; one son, Stanley S., Pendleton; two daughters, Wendy Graves, Salem, and Holly Harnack, Medford; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Two sisters preceded her in death.
