Robert Lamar Thayer
Robert Lamar Thayer, 66, of Grants Pass, died Dec. 22, 1998 in Las Vegas. No service is planned.
He was born Jan 15, 1932, in Eureka, Utah.
In September 1978, he married Marie Holly, who survives.
Mr. Thayer was a lumber truck driver for Rough and Ready Lumber Company in Cave Junction. He also drove for Southern Oregon Lumber.
He was a Korean War veteran. He served from 1949 to 1952.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Tony, Grants Pass, Terry, Las Vegas; four daughters, Gleoria Self, and Catherine Gray, both of Anchorage, Alaska, Rose Wright, Las Vegas, and Ilene Dugger, Colorado; six stepchildren; a brother, Leo, Anderson, Calif.; a sister, Geri Van Dewarken, Grants Pass; 23 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son.
Friends may pay their respects from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Hillcrest Chapel in Medford.
Ethel Shuck
Ethel Shuck, 89, of Medford, died Friday (Dec. 25, 1998) at her home.
She was born Aug. 31, 1909, in Coquille. Ms. Shuck moved to the Rogue Valley in 1944.
On June 24, 1929, in Yreka, Calif., she marred Ivan Shuck. The two were divorced in 1971.
Ms. Shuck enjoyed canvas painting, crafts, reading, sewing and was a member of the Unitarian Church.
Survivors include her companion of 23 years, Glenn Smith; two daughters, Lael Hicks of Los Angeles and Phyllis Hall of Medford; a son, Ray Shuck of Phoenix; five grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Doris E. Brownlee
The memorial service for Doris E. Brownlee will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Perl Funeral Service's Siskiyou Chapel.
Mrs. Brownlee, 74, of Central Point, died Thursday (Dec. 24, 1998) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

She was born on May 11, 1924, in Jackson, Miss. She had been a Rogue Valley resident since 1949.
On Nov. 11, 1945, in Gulfport, Miss., she married Floyd H. `Dutch' Brownlee, who died in 1980.
Mrs. Brownlee enjoyed travel, camping and fishing. Before marrying, she worked as a telephone operator. She worked for Bear Creek Corp. for 28 years before retiring as an office manager 1987.
Survivors include one daughter, Tatia Baker of Central Point; two sisters, Mary Francis Wiman of Brandon, Miss., and Patsy Dunham of Jackson, Miss.

Frank Noble Howard
Frank Noble Howard, 96, of Medford, died Saturday (Dec. 26, 1998) at Rogue Valley Manor.

Mr. Howard was born Sept. 3, 1902, in Baltimore, Md. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1980.
On Oct. 18, 1921, in Philadelphia, Pa., he married Estelle "Jill" Layng, who survives.
Mr. Howard was a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army. He also worked for Uniroyal Goodrich and the state of Maryland before retiring.
He was a past president of the Severn River Association and the Brookings Rotary Club. He was also a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Brookings Elks Club and the Chetco Shrine.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Louise Howard Dennett of Kittery, Maine, and Ellen W. Howard of Harbor; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Louis `Lou' Mahar
The memorial service for Louis William "Lou" Mahar will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Siskiyou Chapel, 2100 Siskiyou Blvd., Medford. Clergy from Applegate Christian Fellowship will officiate. Private graveside committal will be at Eagle Point National Cemetery before the service.
Mr. Mahar, 70, of Medford, died Wednesday (Dec. 23, 1998) at his home.

He was born Jan. 7, 1928, in Glasston, N.D., a son of Ambrose and Kathleen Mahar. He served with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Henderson DD 785 as a seaman from 1945 until 1948.
He moved to the Rogue Valley from Rupert, Idaho, in 1956. He was a teacher and administrator of the Medford Senior High School business department for 28 years from 1956 until 1984. On March 13, 1991, in Reno, Nev., he married Florence M. Peltier Cooper, who survives.
Mr. Mahar enjoyed fishing, golfing, traveling and a variety of sports.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Louis F., Michael and Daniel, all of Medford, and Joseph of Bozeman, Mont.; two daughters, Diane Gilbert of Vancouver, Wash., and Kathleen Roberg of Tigard; a stepson, Michael Sullivan of White City; a stepdaughter, Cindy L. Dunlap of Medford; a brother, Rick Mahar of Colorado; 12 grandchildren; and seven step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Donnie Mahar.

James Joseph Ballou
James Joseph Ballou, 51, of Eagle Point, died Wednesday (Dec. 23, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center. Services will be announced later.
He was born March 28, 1947 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He moved to the Rogue Valley from California 27 years ago.
On Feb. 2, 1980, in Shady Cove, he married Irene "Renee" Botello, who survives.
Mr. Ballou was a subcontractor. He had worked for Greg Grissom Construction and Batzer Construction.
He was a member of the Trail Christian Fellowship.
Mr. Ballou enjoyed motorcycles, woodcarving, and building furniture.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Brent, Grants Pass; a daughter, Judy Walton, Alabama; his father, Robert, Crescent City, Calif.; three sisters, Barbara Lewis, Cathy Owen, and Lorraine Walsh, all of California; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Anna Mae Ballou.

Donald Carl Bieberstedt
The memorial service for Donald Carl Bieberstedt will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Conger-Morris Chapel, 715 W. Main St., Medford. The Rev. Ed Graham will officiate. Weather permitting, interment will follow at Brownsboro Cemetery.
Visitation is from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Conger-Morris.

Mr. Bieberstedt, 85, of Eagle Point, died Monday (Dec. 21, 1998) at his home.
He was born on March 14, 1913, in Eagle Point.
In 1956, in Medford, he married Opal Davis Chamberlain, who survives.
Mr. Bieberstedt was a rancher. He also worked at Med-Ply, where he was president of the plant committee. He also was one of the first members of Grange Co-op.
A lifelong resident of Eagle Point, he was president of the Little Butte Flood Control Association.
He enjoyed hunting, gardening and fishing.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a stepson, Dennis Chamberlain, Eagle Point; a stepdaughter, Paula Joham, Trail; a sister, Lorraine Sphar, Silver Lake; and three grandchildren.
Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Conger-Morris Chapel, Medford.
Opal Loreine McKelvy
The memorial service for Opal Loreine McKelvy will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Amling-Schroeder Funeral Home in Coquille. Interment will follow at Oceanview Memory Gardens Cemetery in North Bend.
Mrs. McKelvy, 93, of Medford, died Wednesday (Dec. 23, 1998) at Providence Medford Medical Center.
She was born Opal Moore on Oct. 20, 1905, in Lawton, Okla.
On July 23, 1923, in Denver, Colo., she married John L. McKelvy, who died in 1985.
She moved from Coquille to Medford in 1985.
She was a homemaker all her life.
Survivors include a daughter, Pat Meek, Medford; three grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
