William R. Smith

The Rosary will be recited for William Ralph Smith at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Siskiyou Memorial Chapel. A graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Siskiyou Cemetery. The Rev. Liam Cary of Sacred Heart Catholic Church will officiate.

Mr. Smith, 90, of Klamath Falls and Jacksonville, died Thursday (Dec. 24, 1998) at Rogue Valley Medical Center. He had been living in Medford for the past three months.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 449 S. Ivy St., Medford, OR 97501.

He was born March 6, 1908, in Sacramento, Calif. He came with his family to Klamath Falls in 1912 by covered wagon.

In November 1931, he married Dorothy G. Powell, who died in 1996.

He was involved in the family's business, Klamath Falls Brick & Tile Co., until his retirement in 1993. He also was an owner of Medford Block and Interstate Stone.

Mr. Smith developed and produced brick for several landmarks in the Northwest, including Pioneer Courthouse Square, the KOIN building and the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, the University of Oregon's Knight Law School in Eugene and many buildings in Medford and Klamath Falls.

He also owned a ranch in Jacksonville. He was interested in Arabian horses and was a member of the national Arabian Horse Association.

Survivors include a daughter, Marji Brown, Jacksonville; a son, Richard, Klamath Falls; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia, and a brother, Wendell.

John H. Penhall

John Henry Penhall, 85, of White City, died Thursday (Dec. 24, 1998) in Medford. A private service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 33 N. Central Ave., Suite 330, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born Dec. 8, 1913, in Ardoch, N.D.

On April 13, 1943, in Klamath Falls, he married Violet June Vincent, who died in 1982. He moved to the Rogue Valley from Chiloquin in 1965.

Mr. Penhall owned and operated Alliance Detective Bureau in White City.

He served in the military police in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Penhall was a member of the Eagles Lodge. He enjoyed playing golf, shuffleboard and billiards.

Survivors include a daughter, Pam Morris, White City; two sons, Bill, Eagle Point, and Danny, East Hartford, Conn.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7:30 p.m. today at Conger-Morris in Medford.

John `Jack' Fetherston

John E. "Jack" Fetherston, 82, of Spokane, formerly of Medford, died Thursday (Dec. 24, 1998) at the Veterans Hospital in Spokane.

He was born March 14, 1916, in Sioux City, Iowa.

Mr. Fetherston worked for Courtesy Chevrolet in Medford, and Mock's Ford in Grants Pass. After his retirement, he spent many winters in Mexico and Yuma, Ariz.

During World War II he served with the Third Armored Division as a tank company commander.

Mr. Fetherston was a past member of the Rogue Valley Country Club, and a life member of the Elks B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 1584 in Grants Pass.

He was an avid golfer.

Survivors include a daughter, Bobbi Wilson, Spokane, Wash.; four granddaughters; and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Erie, and a son, Michael.

Pamela J. Middleton

No service is planned for Pamela Joyce Middleton, 36, of Central Point, whose body was found Dec. 18, 1998, at Lake of the Woods.

She was born Pamela Joyce Terkelson on Nov. 9, 1962 in Mount Pleasant, Utah. She moved to Cave Junction from California in 1994. In 1997 she moved to the Rogue Valley.

On June 7, 1997, in Central Point, she married Jerry Middleton.

Mrs. Middleton was a lumber grader for Parsons Pine Products, Inc. in Ashland.

Survivors include three sons, Robert Cunningham, Cave Junction, Charles Cunningham, and Gene Cunningham, both Gold Hill; a daughter, Charlene Marillie, Cave Junction; her parents, Charles and Marlene Terkelson, Gold Hill; three brothers, Phillip Terkelson, Rogue River, Mike Terkelson, Cave Junction, and James Terkelson, Fontana, Calif.; two sisters, Audrey Neil, Gold Hill, and Sarah Dallee, Victorville, Calif.; grandmothers, Wilma Terkelson, Mount Pleasant, Utah, and Laura Petersen, Ogden, Utah.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives.

William A. Tweedie

William A. Tweedie, 82, of Ashland, died Dec. 20, 1998 at his home. A private service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to Peace House, P.O. Box 524, Ashland, OR 97520.

He was born Oct. 6, 1916 in Los Angeles. He graduated from Pomona College and earned a master's degree in business from Stanford University.

He married Margaret Lee McCormick 48 years ago in Los Angeles. He moved to the Rogue Valley from Eugene in 1995.

Mr. Tweedie was a research consultant with Stanford Research Institute in the field of international aerospace engineering.

He was active with environmental and social concerns through the Ashland Unitarian Fellowship.

He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, travel and family.

Survivors include his companion, Edwina Ferguson, Ashland; two daughters, Michelle Markus, Eugene, and Leslie Toner, Flossmoor, Ill.; a son, Bruce, Reno, Nev.; and four grandchildren.

Michael C. Harper

Michael Chauncey Harper, 85, of Port Orford, formerly of Medford, died Dec. 21, 1998 at his home. A private memorial service will be held Jan. 2.

He was born June 29, 1913 near Medford, a son of Milton and Ruhama Luce Harper. He attended Table Rock and Sams Valley Schools, and graduated from Butte Falls High School.

Mr. Harper owned several businesses in Portland and Las Vegas. When the Alaska Pipeline was being built, he worked as a welder out of Point Barrow, Alaska. He then retired to Port Orford.

Survivors include his wife, Betty; a daughter, Jeri Hill, Portland; two stepchildren; a brother, Vern R. Harper, Eagle Point; and a sister, Jeri Busby, Eagle Point. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Herschel and Melvin Harper.

Arrangements: Port Orford Funeral Service.

Robert B. Kelty

The funeral service for Robert B. Kelty will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Conger-Morris Chapel in Medford. The Rev. Ed Graham of Butte Creek Baptist Church will officiate. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery in Ashland.

Mr. Kelty, 74, of Eagle Point, died Saturday (Dec. 26, 1998) in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to Telephone Pioneering in the Pines, P.O. Box 5424, Bend, OR 97708.

He was born July 24, 1924, in Albany, Ore. He moved to the Rogue Valley from Albany in 1955.

In 1968, in Reno, Nev., he married Kathryn P. Jandreau, who survives.

Mr. Kelty worked for Pacific Northwest Bell for 35 years.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

Mr. Kelty was a member of the Butte Creek Baptist Church in Eagle Point.

He was a life member of the Albany Elks Lodge, and the Good Sam Club. He also was a member of Telephone Pioneering in the Pines and the American Volkswalking Association.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sisters, Margaret Wishart, Eagle Point, and Edna Tucker, Port Townsend, Wash.; and a brother, Tom, La Pine, Ore.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Conger-Morris in Medford.

Avalyn L. Fehlman

The funeral service for Avalyn Lorilla Fehlman will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland. Private entombment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Ashland. Pastor Bob Friend of the Church of Christ, Christian, Ashland, will officiate. A reception will follow at the Church of Christ, Christian, Second and B Streets, in Ashland.

Mrs. Fehlman, 91, of Ashland, died Sunday (Dec. 27, 1998) at Ashland Community Hospital.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of Christ, Christian, Nursery Program, 318 B. St., Ashland, OR 97520.

She was born Avalyn Lorilla Delzell on Dec. 30, 1906, in Morning Sun, Iowa. She was raised and graduated from high school in Turner, Ore. In 1922, at the age of 16, she held her first teaching position.

On June 8, 1928, in Turner, she married Donald Fehlman, who preceded her in death.

In 1931, she graduated from Oregon State University with a bachelor's of science degree and teaching certificate in vocational education. From 1925 to 1926, she taught at the Rock Creek School, and from 1928 to 1952, she was a teacher in Anaheim, Calif.

She moved to Montague, Calif., where she and her husband purchased the Ager Ranch. She taught at Bogus Elementary School near Montague, and served as the principal. She later taught at Montague Elementary School. In 1964, she retired and moved to Ashland.

Mrs. Fehlman was a life member of the Christian Church, and taught in the nursery department at the Church of Christ, Christian in Ashland for 20 years.

She enjoyed traveling, collecting antiques, gardening and playing bridge.

Survivors include three sons, Robert, Paradise, Calif., Donald, Carmichael, Calif., and Gerald, Yucca Valley, Calif.; a daughter, Diane Fehlman, Montague, Calif.; 28 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by three sisters.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.
