Thelma D. Madray
The memorial service for Thelma Darleen Madray will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Church of the Nazarene in Medford. Pastors Craig Rench and Kevin Gowland will officiate.
Mrs. Madray, 82, of Medford, died Dec. 23, 1998, at her home.

She was born Thelma D. Beckwith on May 2, 1916, in Ostrander, Wash.
On Oct. 10, 1969, in Eureka, Calif., she married Earl J. Madray, who survives. She moved to the Rogue Valley 53 years ago from Albany.
Mrs. Madray was a member of the First Nazarene Church in Medford.
She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, fishing and traveling.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sons, Robert W., Washington, and Richard L., California; a sister, Jane Beamsley, California; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Forest and Delmer Beckwith, and a sister, Helen Johnson.

Elbert W. "Butch" Cox
Elbert Welton "Butch" Cox, 61, of Grants Pass, died Sunday (Jan. 3, 1999) at Providence Medford Medical Center. A service was held Wednesday.
He was born March 25, 1937, in Chandler, Ariz. He moved to Grants Pass from Crescent City, Calif., in 1972.
Mr. Cox worked on construction projects around Southern Oregon and Northern California, including the tunnel between Grants Pass and Gasquet on Highway 199.
He loved woodworking, from making furniture to building a barn and greenhouse.
Survivors include two sons, John K., Bend, and Curtis, Portland; a daughter, Kimberley Cox-Webb, Salt Lake City; a sister, Janice Fritz, Medford; and six grandchildren.

Lloyd Russell Brownyer
Lloyd Russell Brownyer, 78, of Talent, died Monday (Jan. 4, 1999) at Rogue Valley Medical Center. A private memorial service is planned with inurnment to follow at Eagle Point National Cemetery.
He was born Sept. 15, 1920, in Bethel, Vt., and grew up in Detroit.
In 1941 he joined the U.S. Navy, and served on the light cruiser USS Houston, which was heavily damaged in the battle of the Taiwan Seas in October 1944.
On Aug. 17, 1945, in New York City, he married Marilyn McLain, who survives. They met while the ship was at the Brooklyn Navy Yard being repaired. Following the war, they moved to San Diego, where he attended and graduated from UCSD.
Mr. Brownyer was a systems engineer in the aerospace industry for 15 years. Later he was a teacher with the Ontario Montclair School District, retiring in 1980.
He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1980.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Russell P., Lake Oswego; two daughters, Elizabeth H. Gulliver, San Diego, and Barbara L. Brownyer, Talent; a brother, Burt, and a sister, Edith Buckley.

Vergie Anne Flora
Vergie Anne Flora, 63, of Medford, died Tuesday (Jan. 5, 1999) at her home. No service is planned.
She was born Vergie Anne Toyly on June 21, 1935, in Kent, Wash. She moved to the Rogue Valley from Klamath Falls 41 years ago.
Mrs. Flora was the director for Community Corrections in Jackson County from 1973 to 1998.
She was active with the League of Women Voters and the PTA.
Survivors include a son, Bryan, Medford, two daughters, Robin Wick, Medford, and Andrea Flora, Wolf Creek; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Dick Toyly.

Cleora Maxine Hoffer
The funeral for Cleora Maxine Hoffer will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Memory Gardens Chapel. Pastor Jay Milojevich of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Medford, will officiate. The graveside service will follow in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.
Mrs. Hoffer, 85, of Medford, died Monday (Jan. 4, 1999) at her home.
She was born Cleora Davis on Nov. 2, 1913, in Marsville, Mo.
On Sept. 18, 1948, in Reno, Nev., she married Leonard D. Hoffer, who survives. She moved to the Rogue Valley from Hood River in 1960.
Mrs. Hoffer was a supervisor in the kitchen at the Veterans Affairs Domiciliary in White City for more than two years.
She was a member of the Church of Christ in Central Point.
Mrs. Hoffer enjoyed crocheting, quilting, sewing, gardening and baking.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two brothers, and two adopted grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.
Friends may pay their respects from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.
Robert George Steffens
Robert George Steffens, 84, of Cave Junction, died Friday (Jan. 1, 1999) at his home. No service is planned.
He was born Sept. 10, 1914, in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1937, on his way to Los Angeles from Cleveland, he stopped in Cave Junction for the first Miner's Jubilee and decided to stay.
On Jan. 20, 1947, in Cave Junction, he married Juanita Smith Freitas, a daughter of Buck and Sunny Smith.
Mr. Steffens served in the U.S. Army 133rd Armored Ordnance Battalion during World War II in the European and African Middle Eastern theatres. He was honorably discharged with the rank of staff sergeant.
Mr. Steffens was a truck driver for Savage Bros. Lumber and Tycer Nealy until 1950. The family then moved to Ventura, Calif., where he was employed by S.B. Milling Co. in El Rio, Calif. He returned to Cave Junction following his retirement in 1976.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, La Vina Fonseca, Mazatlan, Mexico; a son, Buck, San Diego; a brother, Maynard, Medina, Ohio; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Darlene Ross, and two grandchildren.

David Gale Fiscel
David Gale Fiscel, 47, of Ashland, died December 28, 1998, at his home. A memorial service will be announced later.

He was born Nov. 8, 1951, in Los Angeles. He grew up in Santa Monica, Calif., and was an avid surfer.
On April 30, 1984, in Redwood City, Calif., he married Michelle Jensen, who survives. They moved to Ashland in August 1998.
Mr. Fiscel was a carpenter and handyman who volunteered his help to those in need, especially the elderly.
He enjoyed surfing and the music of the 1960s.
Mr. Fiscel attended Ashland Christian Fellowship.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Jeffrey David Fiscel Jensen, Ashland, and Tavis Fiscel, Burlingame, Calif.; a sister, Laura Sue Evans, Ventura, Calif.; and a grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gale and Marguerite Fiscel.

James Edward Tonkin
The funeral Mass for James Edward Tonkin will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church in Ashland. The Rev. Anthony Rosevear will officiate. Interment will follow in Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland.
Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.
Mr. Tonkin, 67, of Ashland, died Sunday (Jan. 3, 1999) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 15, 1931, in Dodgeville, Wis. He grew up in Mineral Point, Wis., where he was active in 4-H livestock and FFA, and once raised a grand champion steer.
Mr. Tonkin graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1953, where he participated in ROTC. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 until 1956.
On April 25, 1959, in Milwaukee, Wis., he married Joyce Wolf, who survives. They lived in Wisconsin and Illinois before moving to Ashland in 1974.
Mr. Tonkin owned and operated the Phoenix Food Market from 1974 until 1979.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Jeffrey, Medford, Jayson, Redding, Calif., and Jerome, Antioch, Calif.; two daughters, Jacalyn Tonkin, Medford, and JoAnn Sparks-Perry, Benton City, Wash.; a brother, Thomas, Mineral Point; two sisters, Jeanne Cox, Arden, N.C., and Joanne McDonald, Madison, Wis.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, William, and a sister, Mary Tonkin.

Lucy Ann Poucher
The memorial service for Lucy Ann Poucher will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Church, 44 N. Second St., Ashland. The Rev. Clifford Blinman of Trinity Episcopal Church will officiate. Inurnment will be in Tekamah Memorial Cemetery in Tekamah, Neb., at a later date.
Ms. Poucher, 79, of Ashland, died December 25, 1998, at Hearthstone.

She was born Aug. 31, 1919, in Tekamah, Neb. She graduated with a bachelor of arts degree, summa cum laude, from Dana College in Blair, Neb., and received her master of library science degree from the University of Denver in Colorado.
Ms. Poucher was a librarian for Southern Oregon University in Ashland; Montana State College, Bozeman, Mont.; Fredonia Teachers College, Fredonia, N.Y.; and the Medical Center, Syracuse, N.Y.
She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Ashland, and was a gifted pianist and organist.
Survivors include her sister-in-law, Helen Johnston-Poucher, Salem; and nieces Mary Poucher Parkinson and Patricia Poucher Van Tuyl. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Poucher.
