Hazel Susan Gregory
The memorial service for Hazel Susan Gregory will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Pastor William Lehmann of St. Peter's Lutheran Church will officiate.
Mrs. Gregory, 86, of Medford, died Wednesday (March 3, 1999) in Ashland.

She was born Hazel Susan Garnier on May 23, 1912, in Westcliffe, Colo.
On Dec. 6, 1928, in Bisbee, Ariz., she married William F. Gregory, who preceded her in death. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1945 from Richmond, Calif.
During World War II, Mrs. Gregory was a welder for Kaiser Shipyard.
She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, the Good Sams Club, the Sams Valley Ladies Club, and was an avid bowler with the Bowling League of Medford.
Mrs. Gregory enjoyed her family, gardening, fishing and crafts.
Survivors include a son, William, White City; a daughter, Carol Gregory, Medford; eight grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Adeliade Garnier, and two brothers, Felious Amil Garnier, and Raymond Alphonse Garnier.

Retta Malvery Birch
Retta Malvery Birch, 47, of Eagle Point, died Thursday (March 4, 1999) at her home. A private service has been held.
She was born Retta Malvery Stallsworth on Jan. 24, 1952, in Medford, a daughter of Ted and Lona Roberts Stallsworth.
She attended Rogue River High School and lived in the Rogue Valley her entire life.
In 1988, in Lake Tahoe, Nev., she married Robert Birch, who survives.
Mrs. Birch and her husband owned and operated Hog Heaven Restaurant and Lounge in Phoenix. She was previously employed as a bartender for the Talent Club and the Tally Ho in Talent.
She enjoyed cooking and baking, camping, fishing, and her grandchildren.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sons, Ted Stallsworth, Seaside, and Mark Nicholas, Gresham; two stepdaughters, Natalie Birch, Central Point, and Janet Ziegenhagen, Long Beach, Calif.; her mother, Lona Stallsworth, Phoenix; two brothers, Don Stallsworth, Rogue River, and Paul Stallsworth, of Alaska; a sister, Mary Jane Shanklin, Rogue River; and eight grandchildren. Her father, Ted Raymond Stallsworth, died in 1975.

Gary Lee Shewmaker
Gary Lee Shewmaker, 58, of Central Point, died Thursday (March 4, 1999) at Rogue Valley Medical Center. A private service was held.
He was born April 19, 1940, in Long Beach, Calif.
On Dec. 1, 1968, in Las Vegas, he married Joanne R. Farley. They later divorced. He moved to the Rogue Valley from Los Angeles in 1971.
Mr. Shewmaker was a truck driver for Janzter & Sons Logging. He also worked as a mechanic.
He enjoyed automobiles, fishing and water sports.
Survivors include five sons, Dennis Lee Shewmaker, Medford, James Michael Shewmaker, Central Point, Keith F. Bentley, Central Point, Michael J. Bentley, Long Beach, and David W. Bentley, Las Vegas; three daughters, Bobbi R. Gillen, and Cory L. Dye, both of Central Point, and Diana R. Bentley, Pahrump, Nev.; eight grandchildren; and his former wife, Joanne R. Shewmaker, Medford.
His parents, Stanley and Alice Shewmaker, both died in 1983. A brother, John Shewmaker, also preceded him in death.

Mary M. Ford
Mary Margaret Ford, 79, of Medford, died Thursday (March 4, 1999) at the Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford. No service is planned.

She was born Mary Margaret Burke on July 31, 1919 in Boston, Mass.
On June 7, 1941, in South Gate, Calif., she married Ted L. Ford, who survives.
They moved to Grants Pass in 1975 from South Gate, and then to Medford in 1991.
Mrs. Ford worked as an office manager in a South Gate elementary school before retiring.
She enjoyed painting and canning.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include: two sons, Russell Ford of Downey, Calif., and Michael Ford of Watsonville, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Betty June Newman
Betty June Newman, 74, of Grants Pass, died Thursday (March 4, 1999) at her home. A private family service has been held.

She was born Betty June Howard on Nov. 24, 1924 in Kansas City, Kan.
On June 16, 1944, in Grants Pass, she married Donald F. Newman, who survives.
Mrs. Newman lived in the Rogue Valley 54 years, moving here from Nevada in 1944. She was a homemaker who enjoyed golfing, sewing, art and caring for her grandchildren. She was a member of the Grants Pass Golf Club.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sons, Richard Newman Sr., Portland, and Stephen Newman, Knoxville, Tenn.; a daughter, Mary A. Chapman, Grants Pass; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Cecil Howard.

Wiltz T. Fugate
The graveside service for Wiltz T. Fugate will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Eagle Point National Cemetery.
Mr. Fugate, 79, of White City, died Tuesday (March 2, 1999) at Hearthstone Manor.
He was born Nov. 12, 1919 in East Prairie, Mo. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1991 from Santa Cruz, Calif.
Mr. Fugate was a self-employed truck driver and auto mechanic.
He was a youth leader for the Sons of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He liked to fish, hunt and tell stories.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard.
Survivors include three sons, Steven Fugate, Gold Hill, Jim Fugate, Lee, Nev., and Jim Weeks, Little Rock, Ark.; two sisters, Thelma Gaw and Grace Fleming; three brothers, Bill, Curt and Clay Fugate; and 10 grandchildren.
Friends may pay their respects from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Siskiyou Chapel, 2100 Siskiyou Blvd., Medford.
Dorothy Louise Risse
Dorothy Louise Risse, 80, of Medford, died Sunday (Feb. 28, 1999) at Providence Medford Medical Center. A private service will be held later.

She was born Dorothy Collier on Feb. 3, 1919, in Mountain Grove, Mo.
During World War II, she served as a nurse in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) in England.
Mrs. Risse was a registered nurse. She worked at Kingsley Air Field in Klamath Falls then spent 12 years with the Panama Canal Co. in Balboa, Panama, before her retirement.
She moved to the Rogue Valley nine years ago from Rogers, Ark.
Mrs. Risse was a member of the National Nurses Association, National Audubon Society and the Wilderness Society.
She considered herself a political activist and enjoyed traveling, stitchery, reading, gathering huckleberries, and the outdoors.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Cooper, Sacramento, Calif.; a son, Charles, Seattle; and two grandchildren.

`Jerry' Westenhover
G.M. "Jerry" Westenhover, 58, of White City, died Saturday (Feb. 27, 1999) at the Veterans Affairs Domiciliary in White City. Interment will be in Eagle Point National Cemetery.

He was born July 30, 1940, in New Orleans.
In 1961, in Marshall, Texas, he married Ilene Waters. They later divorced.
He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1983 from Shreveport, La.
Mr. Westenhover was a welder and a commercial artist.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1959.
Survivors include a daughter, Scarlett Heable, Bossier City, La.; a sister, Patricia Brown, Little Rock, Ark.; and two grandchildren.
