Ruth Virginia Hickey
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2002 at Hillcrest Chapel, 2201 N. Phoenix Rd. in Medford for Ruth Virginia Hickey, 78, of Medford, who died Saturday, May 11, 2002 at her home. Pastor Bob Larsen of Ascension Lutheran Church in Medford will officiate. A visitation will be held from 3 to 7:30 p.m. at Hillcrest Mortuary.

She was born Jan. 22, 1924 at Des Moines, Iowa to Chester and Pearl (Barnes) Sutherland. On Nov. 1, 1940 in Casper, Wyo. to Billie E. Hickey who died Jan. 2, 1989. She moved to the Rogue Valley from Wyoming in 1940. She attended Southern Oregon College and later worked as an accountant for Southern Oregon College in the 1960's.
Mrs. Hickey enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and the Oregon Coast. She was a member of the Medford Ascension Lutheran Church, past member of the Ashland BPOE #944, the Medford Eagles Auxiliary, the Medford Moose Auxiliary, and the VFW.
She is survived by daughter Yvonne Ingle, of Talent; brother Richard Sutherland of Swartz Creek, Mich.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and a son, Billie L.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hillcrest Mortuary in Medford.
Leland Russell "Russ" Cooley, Jr.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 18, 2002 at the Ashland High School Football Field for Leland Russell "Russ" Cooley, Jr., 54, of Ashland, who died Saturday, May 11, 2002 at Ashland Community Hospital. If the weather is inclement, the service will be held in the Ashland High School Gymnasium.

He was born May 22, 1947 to Leland and Marian Cooley in Ashland, Ore. He was raised in Arizona and graduated from Wickenburg High School. He then graduated from Grand Canyon College in Phoenix, Ariz. and received his Masters degree from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Ariz.
On December 22, 1967 he married Linda Gangnes in Phoenix, Ariz. They moved to Ashland in 1971 where he began a 30-year teaching and coaching career with the Ashland School District. He taught History, Government, and is most remembered for Economics.
Mr. Cooley spent 17 years as the offensive and defensive line coach for the Ashland High School Football team. He also coached Little League and the girls' basketball and softball teams. He retired from teaching and coaching in June of 2001.
He was awarded the Outstanding Young Men of America award in 1976 and was voted the Oregon Economics Teacher of the Year in 1992.
Surviving Mr. Cooley are his wife, Linda Cooley; children Russ Cooley of Scappoose, Ore., Melissa Cooley of Ashland, Travis Cooley of Marysville, Wash. and Christina Cooley of Talent; sister Rhonda Michel of Los Osos, Calif.; parents Leland and Marian Cooley of Phoenix, Ore.; and five grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory in Ashland.
Rea E. Plapinger
No services are planned for Rea E. Plapinger, 78, of Ashland, who died Saturday, May 11, 2002 at the Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford.

She was born Dec. 23, 1923 at Brooklyn, N.Y. the daughter of Fannie and Barnett Fleigel. She was raised in New York City and worked as a Textile Converter. She moved to Ashland from New York in 1993.
Surviving her are son Robert Plapinger; daughters Judy Plapinger and Ann Plapinger, both of Ashland; and two grandchildren.

Leonard F. Reed
Leonard F. Reed, 80, of Talent, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002 at home. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory in Ashland.
Eileen Y. Echevarria
Eileen Y. Echevarria, 82, of Phoenix died Saturday, May 25 at her residence. Arrangements are under the direction of Ashland-based Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home.
Sarah Frances Slagle
Sarah Frances Slagle, 93, of Ashland died Friday, May 24 at her residence. Born in Castle Shannon, Pa., Slagle relocated to Marshfield or present day Coos Bay in 1913 where she attended Catholic school.
Later marrying Hollis Harold Slagle in 1929, the couple moved to North Bend where Slagle worked at Safeway and "The Gown Shop," a women's apparel store in North Bend. They lived in the same house for 20 years before moving to Lapine in 1955 to operate a motel. Tough winters in Lapine caused the Slagels to move to Talent before eventually moving to Ashland in 1963. In addition to being a devout member of Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church in Ashland, Slagle was a regular blood donor at the American Red Cross, donating over ten gallons of blood throughout the years. She is survived by her son, daughter, seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren.
A recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 7 tonight at the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home of Ashland. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church in Ashland. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Catholic Social Services care of Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, 987 Hillview Drive.
F. "Marie" Michalson
F. "Marie" Michalson, 73, of Talent, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at her home. Memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 16, 2002 at 1:30 p.m. at the Talent United Methodist Church in Talent. Inurnment will take place in early August at Trout Creek, Mont.
Mrs. Michalson was born November 13, 1928 in Camus, Mont., daughter of Gene and Irene Stout. She met her future husband John Bart Michalson while attending school in Thompson Falls, Mont. and on December 27, 1947 in Spokane, Wash. they married.
Mrs. Michalson moved to the Rogue Valley in 2001 from Lebannon, Ore. She worked as a circulation manager at the Ashland Daily Tidings and the Albany Democrat Herald. She had also been a business owner of a craft supply store. She retired in 1997 after working for over 30 years. She enjoyed collecting arts and crafts, games and cooking. She was a member of the Talent United Methodist Church, Lebanno First Christian Church and Eastern Star.
Mrs. Michalson's survivors include two daughters Lynn Groshong of Albany, Ore. and nancy Winters of Gresham, Ore.; two sons Jay Michalson of Talent and Lee Michalson of Talent; two brothers Lyle Stout of Whitepine, Mont. and Richard "Bud" Stout of Parachute, Colo.; two sisters Georgia Molino of Pismo Beach, Calif. and Mary Jane Henderson of Modesto, Calif.; 16 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Michalson was preceded in death by a daughter Beth Marie in 1966, a daughter Janet May, Feb. 2000, her husband, Bart in April 2000 and a great grandchild, Caleb Olsen, Jan. 200 and a brother Albert Stout in 1974.

Mary I. Burkleo
Mary I. Burkleo, 85, of Ashland, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002 in her home. The memorial services will be at 7 p.m., on Sunday, at the Grace Lutheran Church, 660 Frances Lane, Ashland. Entombment will be at 2 p.m., Friday, July 19, 2002 at Memory Gardens Memorial Park.
Mrs. Burkleo was born Nov. 25, 1916 in Westminster, Md. She married Ernest Odell Burkleo on July 12, 1936 in Westminster, Md. They moved from La Mesa, Calif. to the Rogue Valley in 1988.
As a young woman, she was a bookkeeper in a department store. She and her husband operated a filling station, opened a wonderful toy store called "The Valentine House" and owned apartment buildings and rentals. She enjoyed sewing, decorating cakes, doll collecting and antiques. She was a good friend, and a kind person and a wonderful person.
Survivors include a son Ernest O. Burkleo Jr. of El Cajon, Calif.; four daughters Mary Kathleen Swarts of Ashland, Jo Ann Fisher of Raleigh, N.C., Evelyn Carol Plescia of Chesterfield, Mo., Linda Kristin Kingston of Shelburne, Vt.; a brother Norval C. Leffert of La Mesa, Calif.; a sister Evelyn Himmel of Burbank, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Visitations will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday, at the Memory Gardens Mortuary in Medford. Funeral arrangements are held by Memory Gardens Mortuary.
