Eileen Sundby
The graveside service for Eileen Sundby will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford. Chaplain Earl Best of Providence Pastoral Care will officiate.
Mrs. Sundby, 74, of White City, died Wednesday (March 17, 1999) at Providence Medford Medical Center.
Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
She was born Eileen Buchanan on July 26, 1924, in LaGrande.
On Jan. 11, 1947, in Kelso, Wash., she married Gordon Sundby, who died in 1969.
Mrs. Sundby moved to the Rogue Valley in 1947 from Portland.
During World War II, she was a welder in the Portland shipyards.
Mrs. Sundby retired from Harry and David after 25 years of service.
She enjoyed gardening, word puzzles and collecting blue and white china.
Survivors include two sons, Gordon, White City, and Scott, Applegate; a sister, Juanita Saterlee, Central Point; two granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Jean Duncan; a stepson, Robert Sundby; and a brother, William Buchanan.

Gene L. Brown
Gene L. Brown, 78, of Grants Pass, died Thursday (March 18, 1999) at Three Rivers Community Hospital.

He was born Feb. 2, 1921, in Gaston.
He graduated from Beaverton High School and the University of Oregon.
On Jan. 8, 1943, in Portland, he married Jean Horton, who survives.
Mr. Brown entered World War II as a 2nd lieutenant and rose to the rank of infantry major as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division. He participated in the D-Day invasion at Normandy and received four Purple Hearts.
After the war, he graduated from the University of Oregon Law School and began a law career in Grants Pass.
Mr. Brown was the founding partner of the Grants Pass law firm of Brown, Hughes, Bird, Lane & Rote.
He served as state senator in the Oregon Legislature from 1953-55 as the Senate's youngest member.
Mr. Brown was active in Boy Scouts of America and was an Eagle Scout. Later he was a board member of the Roaring Rogue Scout District.
He taught Sunday school at the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grants Pass and enjoyed golfing, fly fishing, cutting firewood and traveling.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Dana, Medford; three daughters, Bonnie Brown, Portland, Becky Haskins, Eugene, and Claire Hauntz Moore, Coos Bay; a brother, Van, Seattle; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Josephine L. McKenna
The funeral Mass for Josephine Lomanto McKenna will be held Tuesday in the San Juan Bautista Mission in San Juan, Calif. Interment will follow in the San Juan District Cemetery.
Mrs. McKenna, 81, of Ashland, died Wednesday (March 17, 1999) at an Ashland foster home.

She was born Josephine Lomanto on Oct. 27, 1917, in San Juan.
On Feb. 16, 1943, in Hollister, Calif., she married Richard W. McKenna, who died in 1979.
Mrs. MeKenna lived in Hollister until moving to Saratoga, Calif., in 1957. She came to Ashland in 1977.
She enjoyed sewing, gardening, traveling and golf.
Survivors include a daughter, Peggy J. Cockrell, Ashland; a son, Richard W. Jr., San Jose, Calif.; four sisters, Pearl Woahn, Valencia, Calif., Ann Miles, Antioch, Calif., and Mary Kloepfer and Stella Martin, both Gustine, Calif.; two brothers, Dominic Lomanto and Sam Lomanto, both Hollister; and a granddaughter. She was preceded in death by three sisters and a brother.

Ruth Leah Carpenter
Ruth Leah Carpenter, 99, of Medford, died Tuesday (March 16, 1999) in Medford. No service is planned.

She was born Ruth Halbesleben on Oct. 19, 1899, in Wisconsin.
On Nov. 10, 1919, in Spokane, Wash., she married Royal E. Carpenter, who died in 1980.
Mrs. Carpenter lived in Newport, Wash., for 60 years before moving to Port Townsend, Wash. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1991 from Port Townsend.
She was a member of Pythian Sisters and the American Legion Auxiliary in Newport.
Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Reavis, Medford; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. A daughter, Bernice Johanson, died in 1993.

William Lester Reid
William Lester Reid, 83, of Rogue River, died Tuesday (March 16, 1999) at his home. No service is planned. Inurnment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park in Medford.

He was born July 3, 1915, in Prescott, Ariz.
On Jan. 8, 1983, in Carson City, Nev., he married Cheri Dawn McCammon, who survives.
Mr. Reid moved to the Rogue Valley in 1984 from Sonora, Calif.
He was a self-employed building contractor.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Richard, Salem; three daughters, Barbara Dudman, Portland, Dorothy Johnson, in Texas, and Leslie Lawrence, in California; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mina Whealdon
The memorial service for Mina Whealdon will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Fireside Room at First United Methodist Church in Portland.
Mrs. Whealdon, 94, of Beaverton, formerly of Medford, died Tuesday (March 16, 1999) at Maryville Nursing Home in Beaverton.

She was born Mina Price on Jan. 20, 1905, in Weston in Umatilla County.
On Feb. 4, 1928, in Weston, she married Alfred Whealdon, who died in 1993. She moved to Medford in 1981 from McMinnville.
Mrs. Whealdon was a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Judy Cushing, Lake Oswego; a son Ken Whealdon, Miami, Fla.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Carol Lynn Hayes
The memorial service for Carol Lynn Hayes will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 26, in Trail Christian Fellowship.
Mrs. Hayes, 54, of Eagle Point, died Sunday (March 14, 1999) at the University of California at Davis Medical Center from complications of a kidney transplant.

She was born Carol Booth on Feb. 6, 1945, in Glendale, Calif., and lived in the Rogue Valley for 53 years.
On Feb. 14, 1975, in Medford, she married Robert Hayes, who survives.
Mrs. Hayes graduated from Medford High School in 1963.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Hayes was a member of Trail Christian Fellowship, Eagle Point Community Bible Church and the Christian Women's Club, and was active in the Eagle Point school system.
She enjoyed traveling.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Robin Hayes; a son, Brian; and two sisters, Pat Johnson and Doris Carole Goodman. She was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline.

Bernice O. McIlvaine
Bernice Olinda McIlvaine, 78, of Medford, died Tuesday (March 16, 1999) at her home. A private cryptside service will be held in Memory Gardens Memorial Park. Chaplain Joe McMann of Rogue Valley Medical Center will officiate.

She was born Bernice Koch on July 7, 1920, in Portland.
She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1957 from Portland.
On Dec. 23, 1974, in Ashland, she married Dr. William G. McIlvaine, who survives.
Mrs. McIlvaine was a graphic artist and a homemaker.
She was a member of the Free Methodist Church and enjoyed reading.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Carol Engle, Ashland; a brother, Daniel Koch, Portland; two sisters, Virginia Swanson and Starlene Krammer, both Portland; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
