George William Mead
George William Mead, 47, of Central Point, died Sunday (March 28, 1999) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

He was born March 14, 1952, in Galesburg, Ill.
On Dec. 2, 1979, he married Terry Marrujo. They later divorced. He moved to the Rogue Valley from California in 1982.
Mr. Mead and his father worked together as cooks for several restaurants in the Rogue Valley.
He enjoyed fishing and golf.
Survivors include a son, Chad, Talent; three half-sisters, Pat Homan, San Jose, Calif., Jean Masterson, Valrico, Fla., and Janice Flanders, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Alan Howard Jewett
Alan Howard Jewett, 78, of Jacksonville, died Tuesday (March 30, 1999) in Medford. No service is planned.

He was born Nov. 13, 1920, in Talent, a son of Howard and Gladys Jewett. He lived in the Rogue Valley all of his life.
In 1987, he married Dorothy J. Feris, who survives.
Mr. Jewett owned and operated Jewett's Office Supply in Medford for more than 35 years.
He was a past member of the Lions, Eagles, Elks and Moose lodges in Medford.
Mr. Jewett enjoyed fishing.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Sandra D. O'Neill, Lynnwood, Wash., and Sharalee A. Power, Mill Creek, Wash.; a son, Paul D., Roseburg; two brothers, Richard, Medford, and Harold, Springfield; two sisters, Marjorie Klope and Laurel Snook, both Springfield; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mary Ann Phipps
The memorial service for Mary Ann Phipps will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Providence Medford Medical Center Chapel, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford. Chaplain Joseue Delgado of Providence Medford Medical Center will officiate.
Mrs. Phipps, 76, of Medford, died March 15, 1999, at her home.

She was born Mary Ann Auvacha on May 9, 1922, in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada.
On Nov. 11, 1962, in Yuma, Ariz., she married Joseph C. Phipps, who survives. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1991 from San Diego.
Mrs. Phipps worked in the classified advertising department at the San Diego Union Tribune for 29 years. She retired in 1986.
She enjoyed reading and was an avid fan of San Diego sports.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Michael J. Briggs, El Cajon, Calif.; a brother, Leonard Bradley, Richland, Wash., three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Luther `Bud' Vaughn
The graveside service for Luther "Bud" Vaughn will be at 2 p.m. April 9 in the Eagle Point National Cemetery. Carl Meyers will officiate. A memorial service will follow at Walker Center in Shady Cove.
Mr. Vaughn, 69, of Trail, died Feb. 26, 1999, of cancer in the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Portland.
He was born Aug. 15, 1929, in Huntington Park, Calif.
On April 9, 1958, in Woodlake, Calif., he married Delores Shirk, who survives. He moved to Trail in 1990 from Santa Cruz, Calif.
Mr. Vaughn was an electrician.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Coast Guard.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, hiking and sporting events.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Stephen "Reno" of Trail; two daughters, Sherri Skiscim, Shady Cove, and Teresa Mandernach, Springfield; two brothers, Yale, Exeter, Calif., and Arthur, Westminster, Calif.; three sisters, Zola Bridges, Madera, Calif., Eunice Rounds, Carson City, Nev., and Chloe Kindred, Reno, Nev.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Ron.

Robert W. Cooper
The memorial service for Robert W. Cooper will be at 3 p.m. Monday in Bethel Church in Medford.
Mr. Cooper, 53, of Seaside, formerly of Medford, died Friday (March 26, 1999) in Seaside.

He was born Dec. 17, 1945, in Hawthorne, Calif.
On Aug. 23, 1980, he married Pamela J. Burkey, who survives. He lived in Medford from 1989 to 1998.
Mr. Cooper was director of food services in the health care industry.
He was a member of Bethel Church in Medford.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Nathaniel Robert, Seaside; three daughters, Kaylin Maureen Cooper, Seaside, Kimberly Jean Cooper, Las Vegas, and Stacy Alene Terry, Cypress, Calif.; two brothers, James Howard, White Salmon, Wash., and John Arthur, Beaverton.

Madeline K. Frederick
The funeral for Madeline K. Frederick will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Hillcrest Chapel in Medford. Darold Hutsell of Hope Christian Church in Central Point will officiate. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Mrs. Frederick, 86, of Central Point, died Tuesday (March 30, 1999) in Central Point.
She was born Bessie Madeline King on July 8, 1912, in Plainview, Texas.
On June 7, 1933, in Plainview, she married Elva Luther Frederick, who died in 1981. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1944 from Riverside, Calif.
Mrs. Frederick was a homemaker. She was a member of Hope Christian Church in Central Point.
Survivors include two daughters, Evelyn Frederick Clever, Gold Hill, and Kathleen Frederick Wood, San Francisco; three sons, Max B., Milwaukie, Johnathan E., Ridgefield, Wash., and Orrin K., Wasilla, Alaska; a brother, Elbert King, Plainview, Texas; a sister, Mildred Graham, Blowing Rock, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Mildred A. Bever
A celebration of the life of Mildred A. Bever will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. John's Lutheran Church in Eagle Point. The Rev. Ronald T. Norris will officiate. Private interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Medford.
Mrs. Bever, 79, of Eagle Point, died Wednesday (March 31, 1999) in Eagle Point.

She was born Mildred A. Orth on April 26, 1919, in Ontario.
On July 13, 1940, in Baker, she married Milan H. Bever, who died in 1985. She moved to the Rogue Valley from the San Fernando Valley in California in 1954.
Mrs. Bever was a bookkeeper for her husband's business, Bever Livestock.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Eagle Point.
She enjoyed sewing and golf.
Survivors include a son, Clyde "Bud," Eagle Point; two daughters, Kati Hurley, Eagle Point, and Barbara Woodward, Central Point; two brothers, Wally Orth of Merrill, and Ira Orth in Nebraska; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Bobbi Hurley.

George E. Bates
The Right Rev. George E. Bates, 65, who retired in 1996 as bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Utah, died Tuesday (March 30, 1999) at his Medford home.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Medford. Officiating will be the Right Revs. Robert Ladehoff, bishop of Western Oregon; Rustin Kimsey, bishop of Eastern Oregon; and the Rev. David Close of St. Mark's Episcopal.

After his ordination as a priest in 1959, he served churches in New York, Oregon and New Mexico, before becoming a bishop in 1986. In Oregon he served Church of the Redeemer in Pendleton from 1970 to 1983.
As a bishop, he was assigned to Salt Lake City, where he served for 10 years.
Mr. Bates served on numerous diocesan and national church level committees, including Executive Council of the Episcopal Church in 1985, having been elected to that position by the House of Deputies. On the council he was its liaison to the Standing Commission on Human Affairs and Health.
Earlier, he was a member of the Council of Advice to the president of the House of Deputies three times.
For his work as a board member on the National Episcopal Coalition on Alcohol and Drugs, Mr. Bates received its Person of the Year Award.
His community activities included both Episcopal and public school boards and committees, and others in the health field. He was a member of the State Physicians' Review Committee, the Utah Economic Development Corporation board of trustees and the Westminster College board.
He was born Aug. 11, 1933, in Binghamton, N.Y.
Mr. Bates was a 1955 graduate of Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H., and a 1958 graduate of the Episcopal Theological School, Cambridge, Mass.
He was ordained to the priesthood in 1959, serving as chaplain at Cornell University.
On June 9, 1956, in Short Hills, N.Y. he married Sue Onstott, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley from Salt Lake City in 1996.
He served with the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps.
He was a member of the Rotary Club.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Richard H., Eagle Point; a daughter, Katherine Bates, Medford; and five grandchildren. An infant son, Curtis Edmonds Bates, and a brother, Rolland Curtis Bates II, preceded him in death.
