Steven Swinnerton Spring
A celebration of the life of Steven Swinnerton Spring will be held at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Rogue Valley, 87 4th St. in Ashland. Spring, 22, of Ashland, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002 at home following an 18-month fight with cancer.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Steven Spring Fund of the Ashland Schools Foundation, to be used for Music Education in the Ashland Public Schools, to the Southern Oregon University Music Department Jazz Studies Program.
The son of Peter and Cindy Spring, he was born on Dec. 25, 1979 in Dixon, Ill. He moved to Ashland from Catalina Island, Calif., and attended Ashland High School and Southern Oregon University.
Spring was an accomplished bassist who especially loved to play jazz and funk. He wrote original music and was a member of numerous local bands and trios, and performed regularly as recently as January. Spring performed in the popular original Ska/Swing band "Fifth Business" with his sister Amanda Spring. He received the Marty Ruddy bass scholarship to study music at Mt. Hood Community College in Portland.
Surviving are his mother, Cindy Spring of Ashland; father Peter Spring, of Medford; grandparents Betty Swinnerton of Ashland, Carolyn and W. Foster Walker of Bethel Park, Pa.; sister Amanda Spring of Portland; and fiancé Teddi Saloma of Ashland.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory in Ashland.
William H. Ford
A memorial service was held Jan. 26, 2002 for William H. Ford, 90, who died Tuesday Jan. 22, 2002 at Mercy Medical Center in Redding, Calif.

Ford was born Jan. 14, 1912 in Cooke County, Texas. He attended Southern Oregon Normal School in Ashland, and was the principal of Bellview School. He married Dorothy (Ford) Burns June 5, 1937. He later was a conductor for Southern Pacific, and was head conductor for the Shasta Division at the time of his retirement.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Ford; son William S. Ford, of Tracy, Calif.; daughters Judy Brown, of Columbia, Calif., Sue Sauer of Redding, Calif.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Hazel Hannell
Hazel Hannell, 106, of Ashland, died Wednesday, February 6, 2002 at her residence. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory in Ashland.
Monte Russell
Memorial contributions in the name of Monte Russell, 83, of Ashland, may be made to the Friends of the Elk River, P.O. Box 891, Portland, Ore. 97465. Mr. Russell died Jan. 15, 2002 at the Linda Vista Care Center.
Bessie Jones
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church in Ashland for Bessie Jones, 95, of Ashland. Jones died Saturday, Jan. 19 at Linda Vista Care Center.
Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Lutheran School, 1760 E. Main St., Ashland.
Mrs. Jones was born Aug. 20, 1906 in Rogers, Ark. to Melville and Hattie Harman. She married George E. Jones on Jan. 2, 1923 in Tilden, Ill.
Mrs. Jones loved her children and grandchildren and was very supportive of Grace Lutheran School in Ashland. She was also very active in the Nazarene Church during most of her life.
Survivors include a son, George Richard Jones, of Jensen Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Harriet Wray, of Ashland; 11 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, one son and one daughter.
Ann Meierhoff Reese
Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002 at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland for Ann Meierhoff Reese, 94, of Ashland, who died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002 at Ashland Community Hospital.
The Rev. Anthony Schultz of Grace Lutheran Church will officiate.
Mrs. Reese was born Jan. 7, 1908 in Eureka, Kan., to Perry O'Byrne and the former Elizabeth Eisman. she married Raymond Meierhoff on Nov. 9, 1928. He preceded her in death on Dec. 15, 1960. In 1965, she married Lee Reese, who preceded her in death on Dec. 21, 1965.
She came to Ashland in 1969 from Desert Hot Springs, Calif. for 25 years she worked for ACCESS, Inc. Loves and Fishes as a meal site manager.
Survivors include her son, Darryl Meierhoff of Ashland; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; a son, Raymond Meierhoff Jr., preceded her in death in 1925. Two sisters also preceded her in death.

Marian M. Doyle
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002 at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church in Ashland for Marian M. Doyle, 84. She died Wednesday Feb. 13, 2002 after an 18-year struggle with cancer.
She was born in Chicago, Ill. on Feb. 7, 1918 to John Patrick and Frances (Massey) Maher. She attended grade and high schools in Chicago, earned a degree from Rockford College, Ill. and also did postgraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin Madison, Purdue University, Eastern Washington University and the Goethe Institute in Germany.
Mrs. Doyle taught high school in Chicago and Forreston, Ill. In 1941 she married Frank E. Laskos of Oregon, Ill. They later divorced. In 1977 she married Lelie J. (Larry) Doyle of Rockford, Ill. and Lauderdale by the Sea, Fla. He died in 1982.
Mrs. Doyle was an author, bridge player, crossword puzzle fan, hospital volunteer and world traveler. In Florida she was president of the Fountainhead Associates Inc. Moving to Ashland, she was a pioneer at the Mountain Meadows Retirement Community, and served on several committees there. She was a former treasurer of the Ashland Senior Aces Computer Club.
Survivors include her sons and their wives: Edward and Sharon Laskos of Ashland, and Laurance and Theresa Laskos of Rochelle, Ill.; two grandchildren, Samantha and Jeffrey Laskos of Ashland; a sister and her husband, Rosemary and Donald Otten of Sun City, AZ.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Thomas and James Maher, and one sister, Marjorie Ziemba.

Wanda H. Heath
A graveside service was scheduled for noon today, Feb. 15, 2002 at the Mountain View Cemetery in Ashland for Wanda H. Heath, 92, of Central Point. Mrs. Heath died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002 at home.
She was born June 5, 1909 at Perry, Utah to Joseph and Stella Young. She moved with her family to Northern California and married Dale Heath in Klamath Falls in 1927. Mr. Heath died in 1970.
Mrs. Heath lived in Klamath Falls until the mid 1980's when she moved to Jacksonville. She has lived in Central Point for the last 10 years.
Mrs. Heath enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Surviving her are: three sisters, Hazel Black of Central Point, Lona Louise Stewart of Gridley, Calif., and Stella Ann Selby of Yreka, Calif.; and one brother, Marlin E. Young of Gridley, Calif.
